8.6.2009WinVerifyTrust update will be mandatory for WSUS
Cecilia Cole: A couple of weeks ago, I
posted about Windows Vista Service Pack 1s availability to WSUS. In that post, we mentioned that you should install the
WinVerifyTrust update (
KB 938759) if you are running your WSUS server on a
Windows 2003 server to prevent Windows Vista SP1 from being continually re-downloaded to the server once the service pack is released to WSUS.
Today, wed like to let you know that, in order to make sure all customers are well protected, we will be marking this particular
update as mandatory, which means it will appear in the Updates/WSUS Updates node of the Admin console, and will be auto-approved by default (since the
śAdvanced/WSUS Updatesť checkbox is checked by default in Options/Automatic Approvals).

28.06.2006WSUS Server 2003 Fix for Vista SP1 Download
Windows Vista SP1 will be released as an update on Microsoft Update (MU). The patch is very large and there is a bug in Windows Server 2003 in the
WinVerifyTrust API that will cause signing validation to fail.
What this means is that once you approve this update on a
System Center Essentials 2007 server on a Windows Server 2003 server, every time the server syncs from MU it will redownload the package, fail the
cert validation, and so the download will fail. The problem will continue until you install the WinVerifyTrust patch on the System Center Essentials
server. This patch is a hotfix (not a public GDR), so is not intended to be widely distributed. We recommend it only be installed on the System
Center Essentials server itself.
You can obtain this hotfix here:

29.01.2008Lenovo lets you disable your laptop with a text message
In the next couple months Lenovo will be rolling out a BIOS update for its Montevina laptop users which enables remote shutdown and subsequent
encryption via text message. The tech relies on the laptop having a WWAN connection and activates when a custom string, defined by the user and sent
from a single, paired phone, is received. In other words, you can choose whatever you want as the shutdown signal, from a cool "Kill" or
"Self-Destruct" to a long, patronizing multi-part message about the thieving youth of today. Constant Secure Remote Disable, as it's called,
isn't being touted as a first line of defense.

25.11.2008Microsoft: Malware can disable UAC in Windows 7 "by design"
A month has barely passed since the public beta debut of Windows 7 and we have our first horror story. UAC (user account control) was the major gripe
with Windows Vista which annoyed most tech savvy users and confused ordinary consumers. Microsoft has changed the behavior in Windows 7, lowering the
requirement for user interaction when changing system settings. The apparent downside to this is, according to reports, the way Microsoft has changed
the behavior makes it extremely easy for malware authors to write code to disable UAC without user intervention.

26.11.2008BREIN claims victory over Demonoid, Demonoid claims downtime was coincidental
There's a bit of a public

by attempting to rid the

the only site BREIN wanted to

LeaseWeb disable Demonoid as
well.
Yesterday, it
appeared that BREIN had gotten
its way. Demonoid was off

Vista, thy name is bloat! The latest Windows packs a lot of code -- more than any version of Windows ever -- and some of it is just plain unnecessary.
All of that excess code has a way of slowing down an operating system. You can regain some PC performance by removing unneeded features.
InfoWorld have identified a dozen Vista features that you can turn off right now. Some are shiny baubles that slow down graphics performance, while
others are optional utilities that hog memory when they shouldn't. A few can actually be quite useful, though they play a major role in bogging

17.05.2007Microsoft hands Vista code to security vendors
Microsoft has taken the first
step toward addressing
complaints made by security
vendors Symantec Corp. and
McAfee Inc., which had feared
that the software giant's
upcoming Vista operating
system would harm their
customers. On Monday,
Microsoft released API

allow security vendors to

ship with Vista. Symantec and
McAfee had complained that
without the ability to disable
this software, Vista users who
had purchased their products
would receive duplicate and
confusing security messages.
The APIs are being
released via several of
Microsoft's security partner
programs, including the
SecureIT Alliance and the
Microsoft Security Response
Alliance, said Adrien
Robinson, a director with
Microsoft's Security
Technology Unit.

23.12.2005Disable Windows Server 2003 SP2 Scalable Networking Pack features
Michael Platts: As you may know, Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 included the
Scalable Networking Pack (or SNP) which allowed for increased performance in many situations by allowing some TCP functionality
to be handled by the network driver and network adapter instead of the Windows TCP/IP stack itself. This functionality was enabled by default in
Service Pack 2.
There have been some problems seen in some environments where Windows Server 2003 SP2 has been deployed on
systems that support the SNP features. Issues like this have been discussed in several previously published Knowledge Base articles.
There is now a new update available that will turn off the Scalable Networking Pack features on Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2
systems. The article lists a number of symptoms that have been seen when Windows Server 2003 SNP is enabled and links to download the update for
x86, x64, and Itanium-based systems:
An update to turn off
default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers winbeta.org -
14.03.2008IE Update to Disable "Click to Activate"
This is a preview of the update that will be available in April 2008.
If you don’t recall, in April 2006, we made a change to
how Internet Explorer handled embedded controls used on some webpages. Some sites required users to “click to activate” before they could
interact with the control. Microsoft has now licensed the technologies from Eolas Technologies inc, removing the “click to activate”
requirement in Internet Explorer.
"This change will require no modifications to existing pages, and no new actions for developers
creating new pages," LePage said in a post to Microsoft's IE blog. "We are simply reverting to the old behavior. Once Internet Explorer is
updated, all pages that currently require 'click to activate' will no longer require the control to be activated. They'll just work."
