09.08.2006Philips and Lite-on announce $199 Blu-ray drive for the PC
If price is the battleground where the war between Blu-ray and HD DVD will be fought, then Philips and Lite-On Digital Solutions fired a new salvo on
Tuesday, with the announcement of a $199 drive. Unfortunately, the internal PLDS DH-4O1S drive is not the official answer to the $99 Toshiba
HD DVD player that went on sale at Wal-mart last week. The DH-401S is an internal drive for the PC that simply plays back Blu-ray, DVD, and CD discs,
although the manufacturers noted that a PC equipped with the drive could be connected via an HDMI cable to a TV.
Spec-wise, the drive reads
either single- or dual-layer BD-R/RE/ROM discs at up to 4X speeds, while single- or double-layer DVD±R or DVD-ROM discs can be read at 12X and
single or double-layer DVD±RW discs can be read at 8X speeds. DVD, Single-layer or Double-layer media at 4X maximum. Single Layer DVD ±R
or DVD-ROM can be read at 12X max, while Double Layer DVD±R and Single Layer DVD±RW can be read at 8X max. CD-R/RW/ROM has a maximum
read speed of 32X.

14.11.2007Xbox 360 to get new HD DVD drive next year
PC World UK is reporting that Microsoft plans to launch an
updated HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 in 2008. The announcement was made in London by Mark Bennett,
Microsoft's European business development director for HD DVD.
The original Xbox360 HD DVD drive, launched in November 2006, is
fully compatible with Windows Vista and currently sells for $179.99 after a $20 price drop last month. Additionally, any purchases made between August
1st and September 30th will include five free HD DVD movies. Details on the new HD DVD drive are scarce at the moment; perhaps theyll include a video
and audio decoder chip to lessen the burden on the console.

30.10.20071st Official HD-DVD drive for PCs
Buffalo will be launching the
HDV-ROM2.4FB at the end of
this month. Officially this
HD-DVD drive (OEMed by
Toshiba) will be the world's
first HD-DVD drive for PCs.
Some high-end PCs already
shipped with HD-DVD drives,
but until now it was
impossible to buy any ATAPI
HD-DVD drives sold
independently for PCs. Next to
HD-DVD discs, the device will
of course also read all
previous formats: DVD±R/RW,
DVD±R/R DL, DVD-ROM and
CD-R/RW/ROM.
The
device will retail for about
38850JPY, thats
~337usd/254eur. Seems a bit
expensive considering the Xbox
360 HD-DVD Addon is already
available right now for just
199usd and can be used in
Windows Vista (natively) and
Windows XP (with some special
drivers) too. The only thing
missing in the Xbox360 HD-DVD
package is PC software to
playback HD-DVD movies. The
Buffalo drive comes with
PowerDVD HD-DVD Edition.

16.08.2005Microsoft denies any Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive possibility
Three years ago at E3 2006, Bill Gates, former CEO of Microsoft, announced a Xbox 360 HD DVD player that was capable of playing HD-DVD's. After
the bloody war between HD-DVDs and Blu-ray discs was over and HD-DVD's were no more, Microsoft decided to discontinue the HD DVD drive for the
Xbox 360. Since then there have been multiple rumours regarding a possible Blu-ray drive coming to the Xbox 360. While statistics from the Digital
Entertainment Group clearly show a spike in Blu-ray movie sales (91% in the first half of this year), Microsoft once again denied that a Blu-ray
player for the Xbox 360 was in the making.

26.02.2008Toshiba announces desktop HD DVD recorder
Toshiba has announced that
their new HD DVD recorder, the
SD-H903A, will be available

a regular 5.25" form factor,
runs on the SATA interface and
is compatible with various DVD
and CD formats. But don't get

generation model: write speeds
are very limited. 1x on HD

8x on DVD-R and DVD+R media

finally 10x on CD-R.

adopters are going to want to

07.10.2008Microsoft: No plan for
internal HD-DVD on Xbox
A report surfaced on
Australian technology site
iTWire suggesting that
Microsoft eventually will
release an Xbox 360 that has
been revised to include an HD
DVD drive internally.
Microsoft currently
plans to release an external
HD DVD add-on for the Xbox
360, although an exact price
and launch date have yet to be
announced. What lends some
credence to the report,
however, is that it's Toshiba
(which is behind the HD DVD
format that's competing with
Sony's Blu-ray) that believes
Microsoft will be going the
internal route.
In fact, the article claims
that a senior Toshiba
executive has predicted that
Microsoft will release an Xbox
360 model with an internal HD
DVD drive before the end of
the year. "We have no plans
to release the Xbox 360 with
an internal HD DVD drive,"
Microsoft replied.

02.07.2006Install Windows Vista from a high speed USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Why would someone want to
install a client OS from a
thumb drive instead of a
DVDROM or over the network?
One reason: Performance.
Installing Windows
Vista from a high speed USB
flash drive is in my
experience the easiest &
fastest way to complete a
Windows Vista install. This is
much faster than using a DVD,
gigabit ethernet, or possibly
even some external USB 2.0
hard drives, due to
differences in access speed &
transfer rate. To put this
into perspective, y'know how
installing Windows on a
Virtual PC virtual machine
from an .ISO CD image is
really, really, really fast?
Imagine something
roughly just as fast, except
for doing installations of the
OS on to actual
workstations.

22.06.2007LaCie Brings the Speed!
LaCie has just unveiled an external Blu-Ray burner that can write at 4x speed. This write speed is twice as fast as the previous model. This drive
will also double as a CDR and DVD burner, writing at 32x and 16x.
Unfortunately, with double the speed comes a hefty price increase at
roughly $900. This is a steep price considering other drives can be bought starting at $200.
The LaCie’s new model designed
by Neil Poulton (the award-winning Scottish designer) will at least look pretty on your computer desk.

30.05.2008Microsoft stands behind HD DVD for Xbox 360
Microsoft's director of global marketing for the Xbox 360, Albert Penello, told BetaNews this morning that the company will continue to push an HD
DVD drive for the Xbox 360, but acknowledged the external nature would enable it to ship a Blu-ray drive if Sony's format became the new
high-definition standard.
Penello also said that despite the rumors, Microsoft has never planned to ship an Xbox console with an
integrated HD DVD drive, but the decision has nothing to do with the uncertainty in the format war. Because neither standard was finalized when the
Xbox 360 shipped, Microsoft opted to use DVDs.
Changing that now could lead to confusion among consumers, Penello added,
especially if game developers were to make use of the larger space on HD DVD discs. He admitted that Sony's inclusion of Blu-ray in the PlayStation 3
has helped that format, but said Microsoft's add-on HD DVD drive alone has outsold all standalone Blu-ray players combined.

09.01.2008Microsoft denies new HD DVD drive
Microsoft has denied there will be
a
new HD DVD drive next year or any new PC support, claiming a misquote. A Microsoft spokesperson also told me this morning that there will be no
plans to incorporate HD DVD into the PC platform in the future.
Not too many people were paying attention to the briefing, but I
was taking notes and a journalist on PCW's sister title,
ComputerActive, can also
confirm what I heard, especially since we discussed it afterwards.
Interestingly enough a female reporter, also present at the
event, recorded the whole conversation on a Dictaphone.
He may have said something he didn't mean to, but Mark Bennett, business
development director for HD DVD at Microsoft Europe, told me there would be a new HD DVD drive in 2008 when I pressed him about the dominance of
Blu-ray in the market.
Bennett wouldn't go into details and I have no idea what kind of drive might be on the horizon, since it
could be new colours, a slimmer redesign or internal changes to support
upcoming triple layer HD DVDs.

22.09.2007Seagate shows off 6Gbps SATA3 hard drive transfer speed
Partnering up with AMD, on Monday Seagate announced the latest Serial ATA specification: SATA3. The new specification offers hard drive transfer
speeds of up to 6Gbps, which is around 600MBps. This new specification was developed by the Serial ATA International Organization, in order to
provide a hefty upgrade from today's SATA2 specification. So just how much of an upgrade is it? Your average SATA2 drive today can offer hard
drive transfer speeds of up to 3Gbps, which is roughly 300MBps, so in theory SATA3 will be twice as fast. As CNET notes, it's important to know
that software and hardware holds back these speeds, so in reality they're about 100MBps less than they could be.
