10.12.2008Microsoft responds to concerns regarding Aero and battery life
Responding to a number
of recent articles claiming
that Vista's new "Aero"
user interface causes laptops
running the new operating
system to drain their battery
faster, Microsoft has
published its own results. The
company says Aero consumes
only 1% to 4% more battery
life than when the feature is
disabled:
Dwight Silverman, the
tech reviewer at the Houston
Chronicle, has written about
the impact that the Aero theme
has on battery life and
performance (under the
provocative title
"http://blogs.chron.com/techb
log/archives/2007/05/vista_aer
o_battery_life_and_doom.html>V
ista, Aero, battery life . . .
and Doom" -- he's referring
to the game Doom3, BTW).
It's a good post and I'd
like to take a minute to
expand on what Dwight has
written.
First off,
yes, as Dwight correctly
points out, the Aero theme
drives the GPU harder and
therefore uses more power.
But in the big picture, it's
really not that much more.
For example, the display on
most laptops will consume
somewhere between 15-25% of
your "power budget" when you
are running on battery. ..

18.07.2009IE Automatic Component Activation (Changes to IE ActiveX Update)
Pete LePage: Back in April 2006, we made a change to how Internet Explorer handled embedded controls used on some webpages. Some sites required users
to click to activate before they could interact with the control. Microsoft has now licensed the technologies from Eolas, removing the click to
activate requirement in Internet Explorer. Because of this, we're removing the click to activate behavior from Internet Explorer!
Its important (and cool) to note that this change will require no modifications to existing webpages, and no new actions for developers creating
new pages. We are simply reverting to the old behavior. Once Internet Explorer is updated, all pages that currently require click to activate will
no longer require the control to be activated. Theyll just work.

15.11.2008Aero as resource hog? Not exactly
Ed Bott: In the midst of an
otherwise interesting account of one IT professionals experiences with Windows Vista, Andrew Garcia of eWeek lets fly with this
bit of misinformed commentary:
Aero Glass is an uninteresting resource pig, completely unworthy of all the resources it consumes.
Forty percent of my system memory is consumed out of the box right now, and Aero Glass is the largest consumer. For what exactly? A 3-D ALT-TAB screen
selection screen, translucent window edges and a handful of Sidebar widgets. This feature single-handedly hamstrings Vista installations with only 1GB
of RAM, making slower computers swap memory with just one or two applications open.
Its really hard to know where to begin pointing out
the errors in that one paragraph. But Ill try...

16.03.2009Nick White on Aero and battery life
Nick White, Vista's Product
Manager, has responded to an
article entitled "Vista,
Aero, battery life . . . and
Doom" by Dwight Silverman,
the tech reviewer at the
Houston Chronicle, regarding
the impact that the Aero theme
has on battery life and
performance. White emphasizes
that to fully maximize battery
life, window transparency is
turned off when the machine is
put into a power-saving
profile but Aero is not
because " in the end, doing
so is not going to save you
much more power ".
White agrees with
Dwight (yeah, I had to make it
rhyme) that the Aero theme
makes the GPU work harder and
therefore uses more power.
However, he states it's
" really not that much
more " noting the power
needed for a notebook's
display (15-25% of the
battery) to Aero's (1-4%). He
believes that saving the extra
power is not worth losing
" the cool features that
make Windows Vista fun to use,
such as Flip 3D, taskbar
previews, window transparency
and so on ".
White mentions that battery
life varies widely depending
on the workload the machine is
running. He also underlines
that testing the impact of
software features on battery
life is exceptionally tricky,
even by benchmarking
standards. He claims this is
because the charge a battery
requires can vary on a
multitude of factors,
including the battery
technology, how recently the
battery was power-cycled, how
old the battery is, and even
the temperature of the battery
when it was charged.

15.05.2007Microsoft Claims Vista's Aero Interface Doesn't Slow PCs
Running Windows Vista's new
Aero graphical interface
doesn't impact PC
performance, a study sponsored
by Microsoft claims.
According to speed
measurements of more than 60
common business chores, which
were conducted by North
Carolina-based Principled
Technologies for Microsoft,
using the Aero interface "had
little or no negative effect
on Windows Vista's
performance."
Matt
Ayers, a program manager with
the Windows Client Performance
team, touted the results on
the group's blog. "We put
quite a bit of effort into
making sure that the new
visuals were as efficient as
possible, and it really paid
off," he wrote. "You can run
Aero without guilt!"
Principled Technologies
measured performance with Aero
on and off using a Dell XPS
M170 notebook equipped with 1
Gbyte of RAM, a 2.0-GHz Intel
Pentium M 750 single-core
processor, and a graphics card
with 256 Mbytes of memory. The
laptop's configuration met or
exceeded Microsoft's own
minimum system requirements
for what it calls a "Vista
Premium Ready PC," which is a
system with sufficient
horsepower to run Aero. Those
requirements, for example,
specify a graphics card with
at least 128 Mbytes of
memory.
Aero, which
can be disabled by the user,
is automatically ditched for a
simpler, Windows XP-style
interface, when Vista is run
on lower-powered PCs.

Aero Glass is the final UI for
Vista
Back in 2001, Microsoft's
early betas of Windows XP
contained a user interface
dubbed "Watercolor". But
only months before the
operating system shipped,
Microsoft completely replaced
it with an entirely different
look and feel called "Luna"
which became known as
"Windows XP Style".
That move has created
speculation that current
Windows Vista look and feel,
called Aero glass, would be
replaced by a different look
and feel later in the beta
process.
However, this week
"PowerUser.TV" has released
a podcast which contains an
interview with Microsoft
developers who have confirmed
that there will be no major
change to the look and feel of
Windows Vista from what is
being shown in build
5270.
In other
words, Aero-Glass it is. Yes,
Disappointing news we
