Low Cost Laptops : Microsoft Paints Itself Into A Corner

As the release of low-cost laptops based on Intel's upcoming Atom Processor draws near, Microsoft is getting boxed into a corner. The software company plans to stop selling most Windows XP licenses after June 30, yet most of these low-cost laptops won't be powerful enough to run Vista when they arrive later this year.

Windows Vista isn't a viable option in this product segment! It's too expensive and does not work on the stripped-down hardware configurations required to keep prices low. That leaves Microsoft executives with a choice: Do they extend the availability of Windows XP for low-cost laptops, or possibly concede this nascent market to Linux?

Source: Windows XP to get reprieve for low-cost laptops

Microsoft plans to extend the availability of Windows XP for low-cost laptops beyond June 30, with an announcement expected later this week, according to a source familiar with the situation.

June 30 is the date when Microsoft plans to stop selling most Windows XP licenses. The announcement that Microsoft will extend this deadline for low-cost laptops is expected to be made in the U.S., although it appears timed to coincide with the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) being held in Shanghai on Wednesday and Thursday.

Dell: Windows 7 pricing is a potential obstacle for users

We've learned a vast amount about Windows 7 over the last few months, but there's still one thing that's been bothering those in the technology world (and even those not in it): pricing. How much will Windows 7 cost users? Nobody can be sure, but Dell doesn't seem too keen on it, according to CNET. They're reporting that Darrel Ward, the director of product management for Dell's business client product group, is a bit concerned on how high the new operating system from Microsoft will cost.

Windows XP, R.I.P. -- except on low-cost PCs

Microsoft says it will provide Windows XP Home for low-cost computers for at least two more years, but it's sticking to its June 30 cutoff date for sales of the older operating system for mainstream PCs -- rebuffing calls to keep offering Windows XP as a Windows Vista alternative.

That means XP soon won't be available on store shelves or pre-installed on PCs, unless they're part of a category that Microsoft is defining as "ultra low-cost" machines, such as the Asus Eee PC and Intel Classmate PC, which generally lack the hardware needed to run Windows Vista adequately.

Microsoft: Windows 7 not a lock for '09

It's not clear whether Microsoft is just trying to be overly cautious, but top Windows executive Bill Veghte said the company is telling PC makers that Windows 7 might or might not be ready in time for this year's holiday season.

"I'm telling them that it could go either way," Veghte told CNET News in an interview Wednesday. "We will ship it when the quality is right, and earlier is always better, but not at the cost of ecosystem support and not at the cost of quality.

Google deems cost per action as the "Holy Grail"

On the morning of day three here at Search Engine Strategies ("SES") San Jose, Marissa Mayer, Google's Vice President of Search Product and User Experience, gave her keynote presentation. She said a lot of interesting things, but of particular note to me was that she deemed Cost Per Action (CPA) "the Holy Grail."

According to Marissa, Google is making moves towards Cost Per Action as a more ideal auction-based pricing model, but she also pointed out that it's a long way away.

Cost Per Action may be a new term for some readers, so I'll review it for a moment, and then move on to explain why I think her comment is important.

Through its AdWords product, Google has been testing a version of CPA in which advertisers pay Google only when a certain marketing goal is met. Where Cost Per Click means someone pays Google (or another entity) each time a user clicks on a particular piece of advertising, Cost Per Action means that someone pays when a user completes a potentially larger and more involved transaction. Google gives the example of an airline paying a certain CPA every time a user clicks on their ad and purchases a plane ticket. Only when both deeds are done does the airline pay, but it will most likely be a larger sum paid than a simple Cost Per Click...

Windows 7 to sell in UK for half the US price

CNET UK: We've been doing some investigating, friends -- making phone calls, demanding answers. And it was worth it. We can confirm something very few people get to confirm: British shoppers aren't going to be totally shafted over software pricing for once. Full versions of Windows 7 Home Premium are going to cost us half as much as they cost Americans.

In the UK, full versions of Windows 7 Home Premium -- not an upgrade edition -- are going to cost around £65. That's less than the price the Yanks have to pay just for an upgrade version -- $120 (£72) -- and half what they'll have to cough up for a full version -- $200 (£122).

MS wants to rename netbooks "low cost small notebook PC"

Microsoft has gone on record to say that the term "netbook" use should be restricted and the term "low cost small notebook PC" should be used in its place. The reasoning for the abandonment is because Microsoft sees that netbooks are only good for surfing the web and that there is little distinction between small cheap laptops and netbooks. The real reason for Microsoft wanting to rename the netbook type laptops is driven by its own definition of a "netbook". Microsoft will only license Windows 7 Starter to netbook products.

Microsoft add cheaper server platform to range

According to a press release, Microsoft has announced a version of Windows designed for small businesses, named Windows Server 2008 Foundation. The low-cost server option is based on Windows Server 2008, but with reduced functionality. One example of this is the maximum number of licensed users, which has been reduced to a considerably smaller 15. However, for new or small businesses, the entry-level alternative to expensive server options may prove popular. According to the Windows Server 2008 Foundation website, the operating system will not be available through a retail edition, rather, only available as an OEM option, for servers with it preinstalled, which are likely to be low cost ones.

Will the Palm Pre without a contract cost $1000?

Wait, what? Here's one case of when it's hoped that a rumor is just that: a rumor. According to BGR, Palm's upcoming Pre smartphone will eviscerate your wallet, rendering it a hefty $1000 poorer, if you decide to go without a contract. $1000 is a lot for a phone, though it won't cost that much for a phone on contract. How much is this device rumored to cost otherwise? Well, new customers with a 2-year contract will be set back $199.99, whereas existing customers upgrading will be charged $299.99 to get their hands on a Pre. Again, though... without a contract, they expect a $1000 whomping.
