23.11.2005Microsoft to Make Exceptions for Xbox Live Arcade Limitations
When Microsoft launched Xbox Live Arcade, it imposed a 50 MB
size cap on all releases on its service. The reason for this was to maintain
compatibility for Xbox 360 owners who do not own a model
with a hard drive.
At the time, a 64MB Memory Unit was the only
alternative,
explaining the need 50 MB limit. A year ago, Microsoft
released
a 512 MB Memory Unit, which
paved the way for the Xbox Live Arcade game
limit to
grow
to 150 MB. A 256 MB Memory Unit is
now standard issue on all
HDD-less
Xbox 360
consoles.
Even with the current Xbox Live Arcade limit three times what it used to be, some developers are finding 150MB
simply not enough to fit in all game assets, particularly those intended for 1080p resolutions.

17.03.2008Microsoft Expands XBLA File Size to 250 MB
The Xbox Live Arcade file size
was capped at 50 MB to
accommodate consumers who
purchased the hard drive-less
Xbox 360 Core SKU (those
consumers had to use one of
Microsoft's memory cards).
Under
condition of anonymity,
sources revealed that the file
size for Xbox Live Arcade
titles has been increased from
50 MB to 250 MB and with
Microsoft's approval, that
size can be expanded to 450
MB.
When
asked for comment on the
reported change to file size,
Microsoft said, "We do not
comment on rumor and
speculation and so we can not
confirm that rumor. Aside from
the exception we granted for
'Castlevania: Symphony of the
Night,' we have not announced
any plans to alter the file
size standard for Xbox Live
Arcade games. However,
adjusting the size limit is
certainly an option in the
future, and as always, we are
listening to feedback both
from gamers and developers on
what will provide the best
user experience. Whatever
choice we make, we will hold a
position that provides for the
best possible Xbox Live Arcade
gameplay experience."

01.11.2007Sparkle GeForce 9800GTX Review @ Bjorn3D
With the GeForce 9-series NVIDIA has created quite a lot of confusion. Instead of a major update it seems that most GeForce 9 cards are merely updated
versions of GeForce 8 cards, and unfortunately named so you cannot figure out which card is based on which.
The GeForce 9800GTX is a
perfect example. While the name implies that it is an upgrade for the GeForce 8800GTX, which it in a way is, it also is just a higher clocked GeForce
8800GTS 512 MB. You might wonder why NVIDIA didn’t just use GeForce 9 for all their G92 based cards but we may never know why.
If you
read our review of the Sparkle 8800GTS 512 MB you know that we really liked the card. So it sounds logical that the Sparkle 9800GTX should be just as
good, doesn’t it? Well, that is what we want to find out in today’s review as we test it in a variety of benchmarks.

22.06.2007Epic cost Microsoft ũ Billion Bucks - Yikes
One of the most highly
anticipated games this holiday
season (and probably
the most
anticipated game on Xbox 360)
is Epic Games'
Gears of
War. Interestingly,
Epic and their shooter may
have had a pretty big impact
on Microsoft's decision about
how much memory to include in
their next-gen console.
According to Larry Hryb's
(a.k.a. Major Nelson) latest
podcast
, which featured a recorded
Q&A session with Epic
Games vice president Mark
Rein during a Canadian
community event, the often
outspoken Epic executive
revealed that Gears may
have been the game that pushed
Microsoft in the direction of
512 MB of RAM instead of just
256 MB.
"The
interesting thing is that
story you all heard about us
costing Microsoft a billion
dollars-that's actually
true," Rein said. "So what
happened was, my partner Tim
Sweeney, we had been arguing
and arguing and arguing, and
we really wanted a hard drive
in every single machine; that
was something we really wanted
but we realized that the 512
megs of RAM was way more
important-cause otherwise
you couldn't do this level of
graphics if you had to both
write your program and do
your graphics in 256 megs.
Nothing would really look that
HD."
"So we argued,
and argued, and argued and
what Tim did is he actually
sent a screenshot of
what Gears of War
would look like if we could
only have 256 megs of memory.
So the day they
made the decision, we were
apparently the first developer
they called, and we were at
the Game Developers
Conference-was it two years
ago?-and then I got a call
from the Chief Financial
Officer of MGS and he says
'I just
want you to know you cost me
a billion
dollars' and I
said, 'No, we did a favor
for a billion gamers.' "
Rein also
talked a bit about why he
enjoys working on the 360 so
much. "The power of the Xbox
360 is that you have six
identical CPU chips, so if you
know how to get power out of
one of those chips, then
theoretically you know how to
get power out of all six. So
you have a lot of resources at
your disposal," he said.

Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512 review
With less than a week before retailers start selling the new G92 version of the GeForce 8800 GTS, we are sure many of you are keen to see how this new
graphics card performs.
The GeForce 8800 GT was the first card released using the G92 core revision and as we found out weeks ago it
features superior performance that nears the grand daddy GTX at less than $300. Unfortunately this outstanding product has been crippled somewhat
by its poor availability which also translated in retail prices that surpassed its intended range. Even after two months of its initial launch the
situation has not self-corrected.
The new and upcoming GeForce 8800 GTS 512 on the other hand is said to be shipping in large quantities
already, and when released in less than a week should be available at the manufacturer's suggested retail price. We are hopeful this will be the
case but for now we will simply focus on the performance and features of the new 8800 GTS 512.

Gmail Doubles Maximum Attachment Size to 20 MB
http://gmail.com/>Gmai
l upgraded the maximum
attachment size from 10 MB to
20 MB. Gmail was quite
forgiving and you could send
more than 10 MB in some cases,
but now it's possible to send
at least 20 MB in one
message.
Of
course, few mail providers
will accept a such a big
message, so it's safe to send
messages bigger than 10 MB to
other Gmail accounts, to Yahoo
Mail Plus or to other premium

It would be
nice if Gmail showed a

and if uploading files to
Gmail was faster and more
reliable. But maybe we're
asking too much.

You Want 4 GB RAM on Your Notebook?
The question of how much RAM you really need is discussed roughly once every two years, and with every launch of a new Windows version. While there
are so-called sweet spots at any given time, factors such as the operating system and popular applications have an influence on the ideal amount of
RAM as well. 512 MB RAM can be considered the minimum memory capacity to execute Windows XP or Windows Vista today. However, anything less than 1 GB
will have a noticeable performance impact, as the operating system will swap data onto your hard drivewhich brings down performance and battery
runtime on notebooks. Given that, we looked at the opposite end of the equation: what would happen if you went for a comfortable 4 GB RAM capacity on
your notebook?

Windows Vista System Requirements Released
Microsoft has updated its Get
Ready Web site to include
the minimum system
requirements to run Windows
Vista. A Windows Vista Capable
PC must include at least a CPU
running at 800MHz, 512 MB of
RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics card
capable of at least 800x600, a
CD-ROM drive and a 20 GB HDD
with at least 15 GB free for
the install. Of course,
systems with bare minimum
specifications will be unable
to run Vista in the Aero
interface.
In order
a PC to be certified as
"Windows Vista Premium
Ready," it must have at least
a 1 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a
DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM
driver, 128 MB of graphics
memory, Pixel Shader 2.0,
DVD-ROM drive, a sound card,
internet access and 40 GB of
hard drive capacity with 15 GB
free space. For Windows XP,
users who did not meet the
minimal requirements for XP
Home (300 MHz, 128 MB) were
still able to install and run
the operating system, albeit
rather slowly. It remains to
be seen if Windows Vista will
allow installs on machines
lesser than minimal
specification.
