Java Kernel plan proceeds

Sun continues to work on the Java Kernel, the idea of which is to provide a subset of the Java Runtime Environment tuned to particular programs.

Formerly known as Java Browser Edition, the Java Kernel is planned for release as part of Java Standard Edition (SE) 6 update 4, probably in early-2008, a Sun representative said on Friday. Developers will have early access to the code to provide feedback.

An original intent was to make Java like a Flash plug-in and enable a resurgence of Java on the browser. Applications would specify which features they need, such as Swing and XML parsing, said Sun staff engineer Ethan Nicholas, who is working on the project.

"The basic idea was that the current Java Runtime Environment is simply too big, and most programs require only a small subset of the functionality," Nicholas wrote in September 2006 on his blog. "The 'browser edition' that I suggested would enable you to install exactly the subset of Java that your particular program required, but you would be able to download all of the other functionality on demand (and thus be fully compatible with J2SE)." ..

I'll take a Java to go please

Sun Microsystems has been developing a new solution to bring Java programmers and applications to the mobile phone to help compete with developers like Microsoft's Silverlight and Adobe Flash. The introduction to Java on the mobile phone will open up more functionality on a portable device along with greatest flexibility on how Java developers can create better content and mobile phone applications. So far the line up of compatible phones are Sony Ericsson, LG, Sprint, Orange, Cynergy Systems, and MobiTV. Even though some phones already come with Java preinstalled onto the phone, the new mobile Java FX is going to prove to be great for developers for mobile phones to cash in on the application marketplace.

After criticism, Sun changes Java updates

Sun Microsystems Inc. is taking a page from Microsoft Corp.'s security group and changing the way it updates Java for the desktop.

Yesterday, Sun announced that it will start providing advance notification of its Java SE (Standard Edition) security updates and that it will also scrap its controversial practice of staggering the release of Java patches. Instead, it will release updates for all supported Java SE platforms simultaneously.

Sun Spokeswoman Jacki Decoster said the changes were designed to make it easier for enterprises to patch all of their Java systems at once.

But Sun's new system also happens to remedy what some had called a serious security risk.

In July, eEye Digital Security Chief Technology Officer Marc Maiffret blasted Sun for waiting months between the release of some versions of its desktop Java. In January, Maiffret's company had discovered a serious bug in the Java Network Launching Protocol, which is used to run Java programs over the Web. But Sun made its fix for the problem available to developers several weeks before it pushed out the update to the Java community at large...

Sun lowers barriers to open-source Java

Sun Microsystems is making it easier for open-source programmers to ensure their Java versions meet the company's compatibility requirements, but the deal extends only to those involved in Sun's own open-source Java project.

Sun plans to announce on Thursday a program that grants access to its Java Technology Compatibility Kit to anyone with an open-source Java project that is based substantially on Sun's open-source Java software and governed by the General Public License (GPL). Programmers need access to the test kit to prove that a project is in compliance with the Java specification.

Projects that pass Sun's compatibility kit tests also can use the official Java logos for free, said Rich Sands, OpenJDK community marketing manager at Sun. ..

Java Surpasses C++ on SourceForge

Last week, Java became the dominant language on the SourceForge site for the first time, surpassing C++ in the number of projects on the repository of open-source projects site.

As of last Thursday, Java surpassed C++ with 16,738 projects versus 16,731 for C++.

Officials at Sun Microsystems Inc., the creator and steward of the Java platform, called the achievement "a clear sign of vibrant growth" and participation in the Java developer community.

In an interview with eWEEK, James Gosling, a Sun fellow, vice president, chief technology officer of the company's developer products group, and "father" of the Java language, said it is surely significant "when C and C++ drop below Java usage in SourceForge, which is actually like the Galactic Home Central of the Linux crowd." ..

Azul bullies Java with 768 core machine

http://www.azulsystems.com/>Az ul Systems is rolling out a new generation of Java-crunching appliances armed with the ability to spread its workload across a total of 768 processing cores in a single box.

A fully-loaded 7240 contains 384 processor cores, 385GB of memory and will need 1,835 Watts to operate. The 7280 has the capacity for 768 processor cores, 768GB memory and has a healthy 3,235 Watt appetite...

IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster

One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself how much faster it really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its competitors. Google has put a benchmark it used while creating their Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its predecessor. So I ran it.

I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.

* IE7 benched in at 24, 23 and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39

As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

Sun tests new Java Store, Java Warehouse

Sun has opened up a test version of its Java Store, which it bills as a Web site where developers can connect with millions of computer users who run Java on their desktop.

Similar to Apple's successful App Store, the site is designed to give consumers an easy way to download Java programs. A beta version of the store launched Tuesday with just a couple of applications -- a Java version of the RuneScape online role-playing game and a Java-based Twitter client called Twitter FX -- but developers will have until the Java Store's public launch at the end of this year to add programs to it.

IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal

In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.
