30.9.2008Lukewarm reaction to first IE8 beta
Yesterday at the
MIX '08 session,
Microsoft employees Ray Ozzie, Dean Hachamovitch and a host of Microsoft partners touted the new Silverlight and IE8 betas to what could be seen (from
my perspective) as a lukewarm reception from the attending crowd, despite the
non apparent excitement from the IT staff at Aston
Martin showing off how they now are able to sell cars to potential buyers, and the Hard Rock Cafe before them, showing off their immense collection of
celebrity memorabilia using the Silverlight technology; even if the latter preferred to use the Firefox browser in doing so!
Neowin members
were among the first that were able to
download Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1, because we had already posted the page where the download links were, but up until noon
yesterday, remained inactive until the first
MIX
'08 keynote was drawing to a close.
One Neowin member said "I can’t even edit my own posts on this. I have to create a new
post." while another noted "Is not bad, I like what I see by now... Live Hotmail doesn't work for me with IE8 but I can get it work with Emulate
IE7 button". It does seem strange that Hotmail doesn't work in "IE8 mode", another Neowin member, Brandon Live, reminded beta users:
"Remember, this release is targetted
at web developers. There are a few other nice new user-facing features (crash recovery, and not having to
open new windows for Protected Mode IE to be on/off for different tabs, etc), but this is far from the complete IE 8 experience". View the whole discussion thread here.
What is your experience
with IE8, did you go back to IE7 or another browser? We'd be interested to hear your comments.

Google patches Chrome browser to work with Hotmail
LiveSide: Weve been seeing lots of complaints on Twitter and
elsewhere about Hotmail not working in Googles new browser, Chrome. So today,
rather than waiting for Hotmail to address the problem, Google patched Chrome to work with Hotmail, by adding support for User Agent spoofing and
appearing to Hotmail as if it were a Safari browser instead. A quick check using the latest Chrome install seems to work fine with Hotmail
(truthfully been to busy playing with Windows 7 to spend much time with Chrome, but there have been lots of mentions of problems)...

On second thought, IE8 will default to full Web standards
Should Microsoft choose for IE8 to follow the standards developers want or the ones they use ? It's been a tough call, and late

IE8 JavaScript Benchmarks -- It's faster
One of the things immediately noticeable in the latest beta (beta 2) of Internet Explorer 8 was how much faster it is. I thought I'd see for myself
how much faster it really is by running a JavaScript benchmark, since that is one thing that really has slowed down IE in comparison to its
competitors. Google has put a benchmark it used while creating their Chrome browser live on the web, but it also lets us see how IE8 stacks up against its
predecessor. So I ran it.
I ran the test on a 2.8GHz P4 running Windows Vista.
* IE7 benched in at 24, 23
and 29 for an average of 28.6
* IE8 received 37, 40 and 40 for an average of 39
As you can see, IE8 is about 36% faster than IE7 in JavaScript! While it's a good improvement, we can still see that work needs
to be done, and will surely increase with every beta release we see of IE8...

IE8, and why fixing that pesky 'tab issue' sealed the deal
In my most recent piece, "IE8, and why it's almost my default browser", I outline a couple of factors that inhibited IE8 from holding the
default browser position on my PC. Since writing that article, due in part to some helpful Neowin members and some quality time with IE8, I have since
awarded IE8 that coveted position on my PC and have promptly thrown Google Chrome to the curb. Perhaps the most taxing of my issues was what has been
colloquially referred to as the 'tab issue'. Many users have complained of severe delays when opening new tabs in Internet Explorer.

IE8 and Reliability
Andy Zeigler: Developing technologies that work reliably on their own and as part of the computing ecosystem is core to our mission and is an
important part of our commitment to Trustworthy Computing. Our customers and partners expect technologies and services they can depend on anytime,
anywhere, and on any device. We focus on constant improvements to the dependability of our technologies and services.
For
Internet Explorer, reliability means that the browser should always start quickly, perform well, connect to the Internet, and show Web sites without
crashing or hanging. Most users want their browser to work, recover smoothly after a crash, and display the Web correctly. Users are not as concerned
with what causes the problem, whether that be a poorly functioning add-on or poorly performing website. As part of our ongoing commitment to improve
reliability, we have done a great deal of work in IE8 to make the browser more robust in all of these areas: performance, recovery and display. In
particular I will discuss...

Opera: Browser market is brokenthanks to Microsoft
With recent news about Internet Explorer 8's imminent beta,
Microsoft's long and checkered history with web standards compliance has been hurled back into the harsh, unflattering spotlight. Even though IE8
will have a new "standards compliant" mode, it won't be
perfect, stirring up a new wave of grumbling about Microsoft's attitude and position in the browser market.
Opera CTO
Håkon Wium Lie has weighed in with a new editorial at The Register
about "How to fix Microsoft's browser issues." He begins by stating that because of Microsoft's monopolistic practices, no real
browser market exists, and the company doesn't feel the need to actually listen to its users. "A monopoly doesn't have to consider its
customers' wants or needs. In a functioning market, vendors must consider such things in order to compete successfully. But the market isn't
functioning," Lie wrote.

Support for IE8 pre-released versions extended
The IE8 beta 2 support page has been updated again and the support for IE8 pre-released versions has now been bumped to until March 31st, 2009. This
could indicate that the final product may be released during April. Dean Hachamovitch, General Manager, Internet Explorer had officially announced
earlier that there will be one more public update of IE8 in the first quarter of 2009, followed up by the final release. Currently, the IE8 Beta
testers can download the latest partner build and the rest can download the Beta 2 which is available to public. The current IE build version the
beta testers can download is 8.0.6001.18344 and the one available in the leaked Windows 7 Beta 1 is 8.0.7000.0.

IE8 RTM expected in March
TechARP has predicted that Microsoft will reach IE8's RTM milestone in March during the last 2 weeks. TechARP expects so because Microsoft plans
to announce the final details of the IE8 RTM schedule and available language versions by March 5, 2009. The malaysian website also expects Microsoft
to determine a time frame for the public release of IE8 via Windows Update by March 8. There was a time gap of 8 weeks between IE7's RC1 and its
public release. A similar 8-weeks time limit applied to IE8's RC1 in January suggests the final build's availability around March 23 according
to TechARP.

How to check your Hotmail in Safari (3 or) 4
Like a lot of other issues with Hotmail and non-IE browsers, you just need to change the User Agent string to fool Hotmail into thinking it is dealing
with a browser it knows about. In Safari, this is pretty easy to do. As far as we can tell, however, Safari doesnt remember the User Agent settings
from session to session, so you would need to reset the User Agent for each new session that you want to check your Hotmail account.

Microsoft warns of latest Windows Live Hotmail phishing scam
Microsoft is warning Windows Live Hotmail users of a recent phishing scam that asks for the person's username, password, date of birth, and country
or territory. It's not clear why the software giant has taken the time to warn users of this particular phishing scam, as this definitely isn't the
first Microsoft- or Hotmail-related one. Hopefully, it has nothing to do with its success rate, but it's likely due to the fact that the e-mail
claims it is from the Windows Live Hotmail team, both in the signature and at the start: "This Email is from Hotmail Customer Care and we are sending
it to every Hotmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety."
