New Vista hotfix improves multi-GPU performance

Gamers who run Windows Vista with SLI or CrossFire setups will be happy to know that Microsoft has released a hotfix just for them. The KB945149 hotfix resolves an issue that, in some cases, could cause systems with multiple graphics cards to "perform more poorly than expected" in both games and benchmarks. Microsoft describes the issue as such:

The hotfix may resolve the problem, but it isn't freely downloadable. Instead, users must visit this page and submit a request to Microsoft's Online Customer Services. The company also warns, "if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix."

Please install KB937061 seventy nine thousand times

A hotfix making rounds is causing quite the confusion for Visual Studio users this week, surprise surprise. KB937061 was released two days ago, patching a vulnerability in the way Crystal Reports for Visual Studio handles maliciously crafted RPT files. Everyone installs/uses Crystal Reports right?

Because Windows Update is assuming that all users with some flavor of Visual Studio installed are using Crystal Reports, the hotfix is applied and it reports success (strangely).

Upon the next scan of your system, the hotfix isn't found, recommended for install, and ultimately "installed" again. Upon the next scan of your system, the hotfix isn't found, recommended for install, and ultimately "installed" again. Upon the next scan of your system, the hotfix isn't found, recommended for install, and ultimately "installed" again. Upon the next scan of your system, the hotfix isn't found, recommended for install, and ultimately "installed" again...

The workaround, at this point, is to hide the hotfix but I wouldn't recommend that. Just hold still, Microsoft will patch it up soon.

Update: "If you have VS 2005 SP1 present but the Crystal Reports feature is not present, MS07-052 is re-offered. Customers are protected and are not at risk to this vulnerability We will be updating the detection on Microsoft Update, customers that have already installed this update need to take no action. We are working to resolve this issue and it should be fixed shortly Thank you" - Eric Brodish, Microsoft Corp (microsoft.public.windowsupdate)

Microsoft releases two Vista hotfix packs via Windows Update

Microsoft quietly released two mega-hotfix packs for Windows Vista via Windows Update on August 28.

Microsoft made the two hotfixes the reliability/performance pack (KB 938194) and the compatibility and stability pack (KB 938979) available to interested parties via the Windows download site on August 7. At that time, the Softies said Microsoft would push the Vista hotfix packs out to customers via Windows Update at an unspecified later date.

That date ended up being today. Both fix packs went out over Windows Update as recommended (not important) updates.

What is Extended Hotfix Support?

Jared Proudfoot: As I mentioned in an earlier posting, during the Extended Support phase we no longer provide non-security hotfixes without enrollment in the Extended Hotfix Support program.  Simply put, the Extended Hotfix Support program provides the ability to request non-security hotfixes for products that are in the Extended Support phase.

Remember, Extended Hotfix Support (EHS) only provides the opportunity to request a non-security hotfix for a new bug discovered during the Extended Support phase.  It has no impact on a customers ability to request support, security updates, or other non-security hotfixes created during the Mainstream Support phase.

To enroll in EHS, customers must already have Premier Support.  In addition, enrollment in the program must occur within the first 90 days of the product entering the Extended Support phase.  If the customer misses this deadline, there may not be an opportunity to enroll in EHS again.

Microsoft Patch Causes Problems with Programs

Microsoft has issued a hotfix for users of Windows XP SP2 experiencing problems with third-party programs.

Last Tuesday's out-of-cycle MS07-017 update was Microsoft's answer to a number of vulnerabilities, including the Windows ANI bug. But with those fixes apparently caused problems for users of ElsterFormular, a German tax calculator; the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel; TUGZip, a freeware archiving tool; and CD-Tag.

When the update was first released the week of April 2, Microsoft noted the problem with Realtek HD Audio Control Panel and published a hotfix simultaneously with MS07-017 to help users, according to a blog post by Christopher Budd, program manager at Microsoft Security Response Center.

Microsoft prepares IE7 Beta 3 for mid-August

The Hotfix is reporting a Microsoft source has quietly leaked that IE7 Beta 3 will be availible to the public sometime in mid-August of this year. This goes hand-in-hand with official MS reports that they are indeed working on Beta 3 at the moment.

One fix going in Beta 3 will be will be to revert back to an IE6 behavior when using PHP pages. One IE7 tester noted that "when it comes to compare the code in the session variable and the code in the post data, they're different." Eric Lawrence of Microsoft responded with "for compatibility reasons, we're going to revert to IE6 behavior for IE7 Beta 3 to prevent this exact issue" on the subject.

In the past few weeks Microsoft has made a few references to IE7 Beta 3 on their IE Blogs about bug fixes and releases. IE7 Final is set for a Winter 2006 release.

Vista "Out of Memory" Error When Copying Files Hotfix

You just can’t seem to throw enough memory at Vista.

There have been a number of issues that Vista users have reported relating to copying and moving data, especially large numbers of files. Often there can be multiple errors at play making it difficult for Vista users to track down the problem, in fact very often there is little indication that file copy operations haven’t completed correctly. It’s only when the user checks the number of files in source and destination that they realize they have a problem.

These don’t have to be large files and the problem can also occur when copying smaller groups of files that in total exceed 16,400 files between reboots. Following the “Out of Memory” message a range of other errors can occur such as menus and tabs disappearing within the Windows environment and even reboots and BSODs are reported.

WSUS Server 2003 Fix for Vista SP1 Download

Windows Vista SP1 will be released as an update on Microsoft Update (MU). The patch is very large and there is a bug in Windows Server 2003 in the WinVerifyTrust API that will cause signing validation to fail.

What this means is that once you approve this update on a System Center Essentials 2007 server on a Windows Server 2003 server, every time the server syncs from MU it will redownload the package, fail the cert validation, and so the download will fail. The problem will continue until you install the WinVerifyTrust patch on the System Center Essentials server. This patch is a hotfix (not a public GDR), so is not intended to be widely distributed. We recommend it only be installed on the System Center Essentials server itself.

You can obtain this hotfix here:

As expected, id Software and Splash Damage have released the PC demo for their upcoming team-based multiplayer game, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Folks who download the demo will be able to enjoy the upcoming title's Valley map, which is playable either online with other players or with bots.

According to a Shacknews report from last week, minimum system requirements for the demo include a Pentium 4 2.8GHz or Athlon XP 2800+ processor, 512MB of RAM, a 128MB GeForce FX 5700 or Radeon 9700 graphics card, a DirectX 9.0c-compliant sound card, and a copy of Windows XP.

A note to users of AMD's latest Radeon HD 2000-series graphics cards, though: AMD has released a hotfix that it says improves performance in the Quake Wars demo. This hotfix is available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Safely Remove Hardware fix for Windows Vista

When you click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area on a Windows Vista based computer, and then you click Safely remove Device_name, the device may not be removed as expected. Additionally, you do not receive a message that verifies whether the device was safely removed.

Note This problem occurs only when you left-click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area and then click Safely remove Device_name.

This problem occurs because of a timing issue in which allocated memory may be released while the system is removing the selected device. When this behavior occurs, the system can no longer find the information about the selected device. Therefore, the device is not removed.
