At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7
Like many places weve spent the past few weeks under quite a bit of snow, which is pretty unusual for Seattle! Most of us on the team took advantage of the snow time to install test builds of Windows 7 on our home machines as we finalize the beta for early 2009I know I felt like I installed it on 7000 different machines.

13.01.2009Windows 7: Link your online ID and share files in Homegroup
Microsoft recently released Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 6.5 Beta for Windows 7 which allows you to link your Windows User Accounts with your
Windows Live ID. This may sound something similar to .NET Passport account in Windows XP, but it looks like it is totally different and it is way more
useful than just linking your online account Microsoft cites the following as an example of how you can make use of this feature On his homegroup,
Bob wants to share certain documents with his wife but not with his kids.

21.02.2009At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7
Steven Sinofsky: This post is about a Windows 7 feature that covers a lot of territoryit is about networking, user interface, sharing, media,
printing, storage, search, and more. HomeGroup is a way of bringing all these features together in a way that makes it possible for a new level of
coolness in a home with multiple PCs running Windows 7. A lot of us are the sysadmins for our own homes and for many others (friends and family). We
set up network topologies, configure machines, and set things up so they workHomeGroup is designed to make that easier so it can be done without a
volunteer sysadmin. It makes for some challenges in how to describe the feature since the lack of such a feature has each of us creating our own
private best practices or our own techniques for creating and maintaining a home network. HomeGroup is about making this easier (or possible for
everyone else) and at the same time giving you the tools to customize and manageand no matter what, under the hood the file and printer sharing, media
sharing, and networking you are already familiar with is there should you wish to stick with the familiar ways. HomeGroup is a deep feature that
builds on a lot of new infrastructure/plumbing new to Windows 7, though in this post well talk about it from the experience of setting up a network.

31.12.2008Windows 7 'HomeGroup': rebirth of Longhorn 'Castle'?
Long Zheng: Half a decade after its initial conception, Windows Codename Longhorn still proves to be a great source of ideas. One of which known as
Castle, appears to have been revived to be a
feature of Windows 7 as HomeGroup.
We know what
Workgroups are - Microsofts implementation of a
peer-to-peer computer network for Windows to share files, printers and other resources. So what are HomeGroups?
That mystery
didnt last very long as someone was kind enough to point me to some well-aged reading material which described exactly what Castle was, and the same
person claims what HomeGroups are about to become.

14.02.2008Will Windows 7 track your every move?
One good place to look for what might be coming in Windows 7 is an early planned feature list of Vista (then called Longhorn) back in 2003. If one
intriguing feature, called Location Awareness, makes its way into Windows 7, it could track your every move...and that could be a good thing.
Microsoft described Location Awareness, along with a host of other planned features, in a document called the Windows
"Longhorn" Pre-Release Privacy Statement that detailed
to beta testers Longhorn's expected data collection and use. (Thanks to istartedsomething for uncovering this document and
its relation to another potential
Windows 7 feature, HomeGroup.) Many of these features never made it into Vista --- remember WinFS anyone?

Windows Home Server Update on the way...
Windows Home Server Team: Hi all. Next week on Tuesday, Nov 27 we will release a new update for Windows Home Server software. This is a scheduled
update - part of the ongoing process of continually enhancing the customer experience with Windows Home Server. The new functionality will be
downloaded via Windows Update and made available to existing Windows Home Server customers.
Details are available here, but the main benefit of the
update is that it will improve the remote access experience for Windows Home Server users by providing them with a trusted SSL certificate for their
home servers. That means customers will be able to access their home server from outside the home more seamlessly, without any security warnings. The
Windows Home Server team worked closely with Windows Live Domains and GoDaddy, a leading provider of Web domain addresses, to provide the certificate
for the homeserver.com web pages customers use for remote access.
In addition, this months update provides a new Delete All
button to let users delete all home computer backups that are stored on the home server, as well as a few improvements to the Shared Folders and
Server Storage components of Windows Home Server.

Windows Home server - Cool "Add-Ins"
Yesterday here on campus we hosted a fun event to select the Code2Fame Challenge winners. The three finalists presented their Add-In wares to a panel
of esteemed judges, who in turn determined the first, second and third prizeseach with an associated award of cold, hard cash. Without further ado,
the winners are (drumroll, please):
First prize: Andrew Grant for Whiist. Whiist is a very cool (and free) Add-In that allows users to easily host multiple web pages and photo albums on Windows
Home Server. With Whiist its a snap to make an Office document or anything that can publish to HTML into a web page on your homeserver.com site.
Simply drag photos into a website folder, and you can post albums of your favorite pictures to share with friends and family.
Second prize: David Wright for Jungle Disk. Jungle Disk provides inexpensive
online backup and storage of Home Server content, using Amazons S3 infrastructure. A really nice solution for personal disaster recovery and assured
protection of your most important content. It will be available for purchase this fall.
Third prize: Prakash Gautam for Community Feeds for Windows Home Server. This free Add-In pulls text, audio or video down to
Home Server via RSS, so its viewable from an Xbox or any Windows Media Connect device. Very interesting possibilities here for creating personalized
media libraries, accessible to the whole family at home or away.

Windows Home Server Beta 2 Released & Signup
Good news! Windows Home Server
has reached the Beta 2
milestone! While previous
releases have been tested by
1000+ Microsoft employees and
some of our hardware and
software partners, we are now
starting to invite a broader
group of external testers to
participate in Beta 2.
People that are
interested in participating in
Beta 2 can register, so we
have their names as we
steadily expand the program.
We can't guarantee you'll be
invited to participate right
away (or at all), but if
you're interested get
yourself registered. Keep in
mind that Beta 2 does not
really represent the
"consumer experience." Most
consumers will ultimately buy
Home Server as an integrated
hardware/software solution
that's very plug and play,
e.g. the HP MediaSmart Server.
Beta 2 is software only, of
course, meaning evaluators
will need to know how to
install and configure a server
operating system. Beta 2
participants will also need a
dedicated machine for Home
Server - Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM
and two or more internal hard
drives with at least 300 GB
primary system hard drive is
recommended - and at least 2
client PCs and a broadband
connection.
You can
participate in the Beta 2
dialogue on the public Windows Home
Server Forum. The Windows
Home Server team and other
participants will answer
questions and provide insights
there

Survey of HP MediaSmart Server customers
Are you an HP MediaSmart Server owner? If so, HP would like your opinions about the product. Filling out the survey will earn you a $20 gift card.
If you're willing to speak to a researcher, you will receive a free digital camera or a photo printer. Go here to participate.

Norway Loves Windows Home Server
The team over at the Windows Home Server Team Blog have been
keeping a tally of the uptake of WHS around the globe since February. Theyve come up with a formula to make comparisons across countries relevant -
based on Windows Home Server sales divided by the number of households with a broadband connection in each country.
