At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7
Like many places weve spent the past few weeks under quite a bit of snow, which is pretty unusual for Seattle! Most of us on the team took advantage of the snow time to install test builds of Windows 7 on our home machines as we finalize the beta for early 2009I know I felt like I installed it on 7000 different machines.

13.1.2009At Home with HomeGroup in Windows 7
Steven Sinofsky: This post is about a Windows 7 feature that covers a lot of territoryit is about networking, user interface, sharing, media,
printing, storage, search, and more. HomeGroup is a way of bringing all these features together in a way that makes it possible for a new level of
coolness in a home with multiple PCs running Windows 7. A lot of us are the sysadmins for our own homes and for many others (friends and family). We
set up network topologies, configure machines, and set things up so they workHomeGroup is designed to make that easier so it can be done without a
volunteer sysadmin. It makes for some challenges in how to describe the feature since the lack of such a feature has each of us creating our own
private best practices or our own techniques for creating and maintaining a home network. HomeGroup is about making this easier (or possible for
everyone else) and at the same time giving you the tools to customize and manageand no matter what, under the hood the file and printer sharing, media
sharing, and networking you are already familiar with is there should you wish to stick with the familiar ways. HomeGroup is a deep feature that
builds on a lot of new infrastructure/plumbing new to Windows 7, though in this post well talk about it from the experience of setting up a network.

13.01.2009Windows 7: Link your online ID and share files in Homegroup
Microsoft recently released Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant 6.5 Beta for Windows 7 which allows you to link your Windows User Accounts with your
Windows Live ID. This may sound something similar to .NET Passport account in Windows XP, but it looks like it is totally different and it is way more
useful than just linking your online account Microsoft cites the following as an example of how you can make use of this feature On his homegroup,
Bob wants to share certain documents with his wife but not with his kids.

21.02.2009Hard Drives: Under the Hood
On November 8th, Western Digital held an editors day event that included surprisingly in-depth details about the inner workings of hard drives. In his
article, "Hard Drives: Under the Hood," Loyd Case over at ExtremeTech provides us with a good primer on this often overlooked, yet
essential, piece of technology. Loyd describes the nanotechnology behind the hard drive, what a disassembled hard drive looks like (and how the parts
work together), and finally the "heart and soul" of the hard drive: the head stack.

09.11.2007Under the hood, a quick look at browser engines
For the better part of the last 10 years, browsing the Internet for most meant using Internet Explorer. However, the recent release of Google Chrome
as well as the continued popularity of Firefox, Safari and Opera have given users unprecedented choice in what software to use. But, most users
don't know much about the engines and technology that actually powers their particular web browser.
Without an engine, all you'd
see when you visited Neowin.net, or any other website, would be the raw HTML, CSS, and javascript that our developers use to create the
site. Sure, you'd also be able to find the content hidden deep within all those tags and instructions, but not in a pleasing format and without
any multimedia enhancements. The browser's engine is what takes all of that code and renders the information for you, on the fly.
Today, most of the Internet is rendered by four main browser engines. Trident, Gecko, WebKit and Presto. Neowin takes you under the hood and gives
you an unbiased (but brief) overview of these engines, where they came from and who's using them.

07.09.2008Windows 7 'HomeGroup': rebirth of Longhorn 'Castle'?
Long Zheng: Half a decade after its initial conception, Windows Codename Longhorn still proves to be a great source of ideas. One of which known as
Castle, appears to have been revived to be a
feature of Windows 7 as HomeGroup.
We know what
Workgroups are - Microsofts implementation of a
peer-to-peer computer network for Windows to share files, printers and other resources. So what are HomeGroups?
That mystery
didnt last very long as someone was kind enough to point me to some well-aged reading material which described exactly what Castle was, and the same
person claims what HomeGroups are about to become.

18.03.2008Will Windows 7 track your every move?
One good place to look for what might be coming in Windows 7 is an early planned feature list of Vista (then called Longhorn) back in 2003. If one
intriguing feature, called Location Awareness, makes its way into Windows 7, it could track your every move...and that could be a good thing.
Microsoft described Location Awareness, along with a host of other planned features, in a document called the Windows
"Longhorn" Pre-Release Privacy Statement that detailed
to beta testers Longhorn's expected data collection and use. (Thanks to istartedsomething for uncovering this document and
its relation to another potential
Windows 7 feature, HomeGroup.) Many of these features never made it into Vista --- remember WinFS anyone?

Microsoft Vista SP2 beta: Nothing new has been added (yet)
If you install the beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) expecting to see visible changes to your version of Vista, you'll be sorely
disappointed. At least in this initial beta, all the changes are under the hood, and even they are far from earth-shaking. Microsoft says that it has
fixed compatibility problems with the third-party Spy Sweeper and ZoneAlarm security applications, enhanced hardware support for Direct X, improved
Wi-Fi connections after a system resumes from sleep, improved Windows Search, added support for the newest Bluetooth specification (2.1) and rolled up
all previous Vista updates.

MSI unveils the VESA-mounted Wind Box
Following the announcement of three nettops intended to rival the Asus Eee Box, MSI has unveiled a new product into its Wind range that takes a
different and rather unique approach to the all-in-one segment. The un-creatively named MSI Wind Box is a nettop crammed inside a slim black, fanless
enclosure designed to be VESA-mounted to the back of your monitor, saving precious desk space and giving you a very inexpensive all-in-one of sorts.
Like virtually every other nettop in town, the MSI Wind Box will boast an Intel Atom N270 processor and either 1GB or 2GB of RAM under the hood.
