04.11.2007Windows Home Server Technical Brief for Home Computer Backup and Restore
Windows® Home Server will automatically backup your home computers to the home server and allow you to easily restore the entire computer or an
individual file or folder to a previous point in time. The Windows Home Server Backup solution backs up only the data that has not already been backed
up. Even if you have several copies of the same data on different computers, the data is backed up only once on your home server and your home server
keeps track of what data was stored on each home computer on each day. This makes it efficient in the time it takes for backups to complete and the
amount of space that is used on your home server.

18.05.2007Windows Home Server Finalized
Today, Charlie Kindel over at
Microsoft announced that they
have finalized Windows Home
Server, the next version of
Windows Server operating
systems targeted at home
users, and have released it to
manufacturing.
Started in February 2004 as
the "Quattro project" or
Windows Server Code Name "Q"
and introduced by Bill Gates
at CES 2007 in early January,
Windows Home Server is
designed to deliver sharing,
back-up, storage and remote
access capabilities within a
home network.
While only the English
version has been finalized,
French, German and Spanish
versions are expected to be
finalized shortly. The
evaluation version with a 120
day evaluation period will be
available in the next couple
of months while OEM products
will hit retail shelves this
fall.

16.07.2007Windows Home Server Connect Site Update
With the closing of the
Code2Fame Challenge for Windows Home Server, the Connect site has been updated so that beta participants can no longer download
the Release Candidate (RC) version of the software. Beta testers will be able to continue to use the beta product keys they downloaded from the
Connect site, but we will not be issuing any more product keys for the RC software.
The System Builder version of Windows Home
Server is already available in some countries, with additional countries expected to come online in the coming weeks. Additionally, a 120-day
Evaluation Edition will be orderable from the
Windows Home Server product
pages for a cost recovery basis to cover shipping and handling in the next 4-6 weeks.
In the future, the Windows Home Server
team will continue to use the Connect site for interacting with the Windows Home Server community by releasing additional items that we want people
to get an early look at. All of the suggestions submitted by the community will continue to exist, as we are busy digging through all of the great
ideas as we start planning the next release of Windows Home Server.
Please check back at the
Windows Home Server Connect site from time to time to see if there is
additional stuff to download and test.

07.04.2007Windows Home Server, RC Next week?
Two bits of information on
Windows Home Server were
releaced at TechEd 2007 "Day
3".
First there are only going
to be two ways for people to
get the SKU. First is from an
OEM like HP the other method
will be from System Builders.
If you were hoping for picking
this up at your local big box
off the shelf, like me, we are
out of luck. there might be
one exception to this and that
could be the current beta test
population. He was hopeful
that they would be able to
provide RTM to the existing
beta testers, but as with all
things there is no guarantee.
The
second bit of really useful
information was that we might
see an RC version of Home
server as early as next week.
If you have been holing out
rebuilding your home server on
RC, like me, then with any
luck next week is what you
have been waiting for.

Microsoft's partners are

Due to launch this fall,
Windows Home Server connects

senior product manager in the
Windows Home Server group at
Microsoft.
