NASA finds lost high resolution film of first moon landing

When NASA put a man on the moon it was a triumph of achievement for the US as it showed its technical capabilities and its dedication to space exploration. NASA spent years planning for and developing specialized equipment for the mission. One such piece of equipment was a high resolution video camera that would send back images to Earth. Because of the lack of technology at the time the video feed from the moon actually had to be compressed and scaled down to work on televisions across the world. After the initial recording of the high resolution stream from the moon the film went missing after its shipment back to the US.

Vista RTM to include animated wallpapers!

The most recent in a series of rumors about what was previously called Desktop Aurora says that the long-awaited animated desktop wallpapers would appear in Windows Vista's final release under the name "Motion Desktop", but Aurora wouldn't be the only animated wallpaper to be included with the operating system, but there would rather be three different ones.

While Aurora is obvious, an animated cherry blossom tree would also be part of it, along with another one that's still unknown as of yet.

The versions of Vista that will include the new wallpapers are currently unknown, along with the customizability degree for the user.

New Windows Vista Wallpapers Released

Since the final stages of Vista's development, many have been wondering why no official Windows Vista branded wallpaper had been included, unlike in Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows.

Today, Microsoft unveiled a new set of "Windows Vista Ultimate" branded wallpapers on the Ultimate Extras site.

There are two wallpapers available, one of which features a large version of the start orb, while the other features the new "flare" design as seen on the new Windows Vista packaging. Both wallpapers are available in a wide variety of sizes.

So, maybe Microsoft finally heard us... or maybe they were just keeping it a suprise?

DeskScapes 2.0 Preview Available

Stardock is pleased to announce that the DeskScapes 2.0 preview version is now available. DeskScapes allows users of Windows Vista to have animated wallpapers on their desktop. It runs the Stardock created .DREAM format which can contain videos as animated wallpapers or dynamically generated content.

What makes DeskScapes special is that animated wallpapers can be run that use hardly any system resources (obviously this will depend on what animated wallpaper is chosen). It integrates seamlessly with the Windows Vista desktop background dialog so picking animated wallpapers is much the same as picking any other desktop wallpaper.

Apollo Moon photos reveal detail

Highly detailed photographs of the Moon taken by the Apollo missions are being made available to the public for the first time in more than 30 years. Photos taken on the Apollo 15, 16 and 17 missions in the 1970s showed the Moon in great detail but were only ever viewed by a few scientists. Since then they have been locked away in freezers by Nasa to preserve them. Arizona State University is now making them available from the internet after using high resolution scanners.

"We're scanning the pictures in a very high bit resolution - 14 bits - which means that for each pixel, you have about 16,000 shades of grey," Mark Robinson, a professor of Geological Sciences and the principal investigator on the project, told BBC World Service's Digital Planet programme. "A typical scan of a negative or film is eight bits. So it's not only that we're scanning this at a very high pixel resolution - showing detail to five millionths of a metre - but it's also a high bit resolution, because we want to preserve as much of the original information as possible."

A look at the Live Maps high-res cameras

Didn't get the digital camera you wanted for Christmas? Then maybe you should consider buying yourself one of these, an UltraCamX Large Format Digital Aerial Camera. Producing images with a 216 megapixel resolution, these cameras are used to take the high-resolution imagery used within VirtualEarth/Live Maps. A word of warning though, Microsoft's press release in Nov 2007 shows that only 3 UltraCamX systems have been purchased in North America since they went on sale in May 2006. Better start saving for next Christmas then.
