I hate Macs

Unless you have been walking around with your eyes closed, and your head encased in a block of concrete, with a blindfold tied round it, in the dark - unless you have been doing that, you surely can't have failed to notice the current Apple Macintosh campaign starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, which has taken over magazines, newspapers and the internet in a series of brutal coordinated attacks aimed at causing massive loss of resistance.

Bang On: It's easy to hate the Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 has had quite a poor record when it comes to build quality. My experience with Microsoft's wonder console does little to change what so many people already know: The Xbox 360 is more fragile than paper-mâché in a rain storm. It's almost as though simply glancing at the console in the wrong way can send it into cardiac arrest. It's just so easy to hate it. I've already complained about my excruciatingly frustrating experience with Xbox support, so we can all rejoice in the fact that this tale does not include any dealings with them. Working for a major retailer, I've had the extended warranty, from the store, since day one.

Facebook kills anti-Muslim group

Facebook has disabled an anti-Islamic group called "I Hate Muslims in Oz" after the issue was brought to their attention by CNet's Chris Matyszczyk. Facebook's stance toward Holocaust-denying groups is more ambivalent. The company's terms of service prohibit content that is "hateful" or "threatening", and, according to Matyszczyk, Facebook does not consider simply denying that the Holocaust happened to be "hateful" or "threatening". Facebook's Barry Schnitt clarifies the situation: "We disabled the 'I Hate Muslims in Oz' group a day or so ago because it contained an explicit statement of hate.

EU MPs to ISPs: Take hate sites offline

A group of European Parliament members have submitted a draft declaration to the European Parliament requiring ISPs to better monitor the content of the sites they host in order to keep hate speech off the web. The five European (from the UK, Hungary and Germany) MPs sponsoring the declaration would like to see racism and hate speech banished from the Internet completely, starting with Europe. Should European ISPs not go along, the MPs will try to get the European Commission to enact legislation on the issue. The MPs hope the EC uses the Safer Internet Plus program, which intends to " promote safer use of the Internet " while fighting against " illegal content and content unwanted by " end users.

MS: How we really designed the look and feel of Windows 7

MS Research project solves mobile touch screen problems

A computer science student and a developer at Microsoft Research have created a technique designed to make it easier to select items on a mobile-phone screen with a finger and not a tiny pointed stylus.

The development comes just before Apple Inc.'s much anticipated iPhone, with its touch screen, hits the market in June.

The Microsoft Research project, called Shift, automatically displays an image on the screen above where users place their finger showing the area under the users' finger. The image is circular and includes a small X. By toggling the tip of the finger, users can move the X to place it on top of the item they want to choose. Lifting the finger from the screen selects the item. ..

10 Warning Signs of Project Failure

Unless you are in a mature industry such as banking or insurance, where information is the life-blood of what you do, chances are you will be familiar with at least some of these 10 project management failings put together by Robert Francis Group analyst Mimi Ho.

"One, they're right on the button and two, if you take a look at the large majority of them, it all has to do with project planning and early stages of analysis that companies like to jump over," said Jeff Monteforte, owner of Exential, an independent project management consultancy in Cleveland, Ohio.

In other words, when IT projects fail it rarely is a result of the technology. At its core, project management is all about people.

Windows Live PhotoZoom Alpha: Silverlight powers new Microsoft Live Labs project

There's a new project brewing in Microsoft Live Labs, Windows Live PhotoZoom. This alpha project from Ray Ozzie's Concept Development Team is Silverlight based and allows seamless zoom controls on consumer photos in a web based application. PhotoZoom also makes use of the Photosynth / Seadragon technology developed by Live Labs, which most recently has been seen in the http://www.on10.net/Blogs/larr y/bbc-launches-six-photosynth- collections/>Photosynth collections released by the BBC. While you may not yet be able to recreate the BBC's work, PhotoZoom is another step towards this.

According to Matt Augustine of the PhotoZoom team, "PhotoZoom is an experimental site that brings the zooming capabilities first shown during the Silverlight demos in the Mix07 keynote to consumer photography." Note that the currently available alpha/beta builds of Silverlight do not feature the zooming feature that is required for PhotoZoom, so the timeline for this Live Labs project being released is dependent on when this Silverlight update becomes public...

MS-ManiC: Microsoft steps up its multicore work

Microsoft officials have been talking up, as of late, the need for some fundamental changes in software design and development to accommodate the shift to many cores on client systems. There are several Microsoft Research projects focusing on various aspects of the many-core challenge. The newest and seemingly most far-reaching of these is MS-ManiC.

According to a new page on the Microsoft Research site, the MS-ManiC (Memory Systems for Many Cores) projectSounds ambitious. What form would such a memory system take and when might it move from research to a product group? No word. In fact, theres very little information (yet) on the MS-ManiC site, other than a link to a newly published whitepaper, Memory Performance Attacks: Denial of Memory Service in Multi-Core Systems, (which is part of the proceedings of the 16th USENIX Security Symposium from August 2007).
