For a few months now I’ve been hearing stories from people who claim to be getting a much better Windows experience by ditching Windows Vista and adopting Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system.

On the same day that Dell detailed its new
"streaming computing"
solution for centralized desktop computing, the PC vendor also added to its workstation lineup.
Starting Oct. 11, Dell began
taking orders for the new Precision T3400 workstation, which can be configured as either a tower or desktop computer. Dell is offering the new
workstation for a starting price of $1,000, according to the company's Web site.
In September, Dell added to its mobile
workstation lineup the Precision M6300, which offers a 17-inch display and an SSD (solid state drive) option. Although Dell has been steadily losing
market share to rival Hewlett-Packard, workstations are one area in which Dell has managed to outperform HP. An IDC report early in 2007 found that
Dell had accounted for 46 percent of worldwide personal workstation shipments in the first quarter of 2007, while HP was second with 33 percent.
The Precision T3400 workstation offers a number of dual- and quad-core Intel Core 2 Duo processors, including the QX6850, which came
to market earlier in 2007, offering four processing cores, a clock speed of 3.0GHz, a total of 8MB of Level 2 cache and a 1333MHz front side bus. The
workstation also features Intel's X38 Express chip set.

Randall Kennedy: Just when you think you've got it all figured out, along comes another curve ball to keep you guessing. This time around it's a set
of
new benchmark test results from our old
friends at the exo.performance.network. Apparently, these guys heard about the brouhaha surrounding some
Microsoft's
engineer's blog post about using Server 2008 as a "Super Workstation OS" and decided to put the concept to the test. They loaded each
OS onto identical hardware, tweaking the Server implementation to make it look and act like Vista. Then they tested them under a variety of
productivity and multitasking scenarios.
The net result: Windows "Workstation" 2008 (i.e the tweaked Server 2008
installation) trashed Windows Vista with Service Pack 1, outscoring its desktop sibling by as much as 17%.
You can read all the

exo.blog site. Suffice to say that there's a new option for
power users who are fed-up with Vista's sluggishness: Windows Server 2008, or as I'm now calling it, "Windows NT 6.1 Workstation."

It seems Microsoft may have a successor (or replacement) for Vista after all and it’s already been released. Windows Server 2008 isn’t
easy to configure as a desktop operating system but when done correctly can be 20% faster than Vista while retaining most of the same features.
Windows Workstation 2008 is not a product sold by Microsoft and must be configured from a copy of Windows Server 2008. It seems this version
of Windows lacks the “bloat” that is part of Vista. However, I am not sure what the author is referring to (but is likely talking about
unnecessary services). Of course this version of Windows was designed with developers in mind who covet speed above all else. Workstation 2008
includes IIS and Hyper-V for creating virtual machines.
A
Microsoft
employee and
third party website have created tutorials on how to
use Windows Server 2008 as a desktop operating system. This is what I’ve been referring to as Windows Workstation 2008. Keep in mind that this
will have the same driver problems as Vista does, meaning, if a Vista driver doesn’t exist for a piece of hardware you still won’t be able
to use it with Server or Workstation 2008.

Following servers with Intels Xeon processors, Sun today introduced workstations based on Intels Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.
Sun now has a third workstation family, adding to the existing models based on single- and dual socket AMD Opteron-based systems (Ultra 20,
Ultra 40 M2) as well as single- and dual-socket UltraSparc IIIi (Ultra 25, Ultra 45) models. The new Ultra 24 is based on Intels Core processors and,
in the case of a Core 2 Quad configuration, is Suns first (single-socket) quad-core workstation.
The Ultra 24 has the identical
outside look of its two sister models, making the Intel Core 2 logo the only differentiator to the 20, 40, 25 and 45. The Intel system is based on the
single-socket Garlow platform supporting six different processors “ the dual-cores E4400, E6750 and E6850 (2.0 GHz “ 3.0 GHz) as well as the
