02.08.2007Fix Windows Vista Fonts
This just in from Chris
Pirillo on Windows Vista
inconsistency's, this time
it's the fonts:
I’ve been labeled a
nitipicker for seeing skipped
details that few others seem
to see on the surface of an
application’s user
interface. Guilty as charged!
Download
this simple
registry patch, but please
applying it?
I’m not happy that
Microsoft has added yet
another shell font to the mix
with Windows Vista: Segoe UI.
On its own, Segoe UI is an
awesome font - but when
it’s slapped up against
Tahoma, MS Sans Serif,
Microsoft Sans Serif, and/or
Arial - it’s no longer a
clean user experience. In
fact, Vista is downright messy
when it comes to shell fonts -
with some aliased faces
reaching back to the days of
Windows 3.11!
These
blatant font oversights were
shoved onto the backburner for
the sake of (a) 100% backwards
compatibility and (b) time.
However, that didn’t
stop me from diving into
REGEDIT and setting things
straight. The good news? I
believe I’ve figured out
how to make everything inside
of Windows Vista stick to
Segoe UI. It’s a subtle,
yet radical,
transformation.

05.09.2007Advances in typography and text rendering in Windows 7
Steven Sinofsky: Even with the pictures and videos so commonplace on PCs, many of us spend most of our time looking at and interacting with text. Yet
few of us stop to think about the depth of technology required to render text well and that this is an area that continues to benefit from improved
technology in displays, graphics cards, as well as the APIs available to developers. In Windows 7, The support for text and fonts in GDI continues to
provide the foundation for compatibility and application support. Building on the foundation of the modern DirectX graphics infrastructure, Windows 7
enhances the text output available to developers with DirectWrite. This is a new API subsystem and one that over time you will see adopted more
broadly by applications from Microsoft, independent software developers, and within Windows itself. This post will also talk about improvements to
ClearType and the Fonts, both available as part of the improvements to the GDI-based text APIs.

07.08.2009Windows 3.1 Add Fonts Dialog
Still in Vista
Well, so far so good with

It's still working extremely

95, Windows 98, Windows ME,

21.01.2009The Hard Drive Factor
While often overlooked, the
hard drive plays an important
role in the system's overall

Hard

areas and an understanding of

Just days since Seagate released a firmware update for a range of hard drives, which were hit by firmware bugs, Tom's Hardware reports that things
don't look much brighter for hard drive giant Seagate. This time the problem is with the SD1A firmware update, for the 500GB hard drives in the

drive to freeze up. As far as un-bricking the devices goes, there has been little success. Some have claimed that downgrading the firmware has fixed
the problems, for the moment.
