More than half of Microsoft Vista needs re-writing
MICROSOFT appears to be in a state of panic, ordering 60 per cent of its new operating system to be re-written amidst a major shake-up of its troubled Windows division. The news follows another delay with reports of a staff revolt over the way that management has handled the development of the operating system.

Aiming to keep its focus on

In a
posting to its life cycle Web
site, Microsoft set a
preliminary date of the second

release of Windows XP Service
Pack 3 for both home and
professional editions. That
puts its debut well past the
arrival of Vista, which is
slated for the second half of

"We

course of the product life

targeting the second half of

Microsoft representative said
in an e-mail to CNET News.com.
"However, right now our
priority is Windows
Vista--we'll have more
information to share about the
next service pack for XP after
Windows Vista ships." ..

18.04.2009Over Half of Second Life users come from Europe
Research firm comScore has
found that throughout March,
61% of active Second Life
residents were from Europe,
compared to 19% from North
America and 13% from Asia
Pacific. Germany had the most
Second Life residents, at 16%
of the total, beating
France's 8% and UK's 6%.
Approximately 1.3 million
people ran the official
software and logged in to
Second Life in March,
representing an increase of
46% in the number of active
'residents' from January.
ComScore also reported that
61% of residents are male and
39% are female. Secondlife.com
was visited by 3.6 million
worldwide visitors aged 15 and
older during March, up 17%
from February and up 46% from
January.
" With
nearly 800,000 active
residents in Europe, Second
Life is proving to be popular
on an international scale.
It's especially fascinating
to note that the number of
active German residents
exceeds the number of active
residents in the entire US. It
is little wonder that bricks

seeing Second Life as a

09.05.2007Steam vs. Microsoft Live... Fight!
If anyone stands a chance
against Microsoft's
pay-to-play Games For Windows
Live service, it's Valve's
Steam. Turns out the gloves
come off in just a few weeks.
Starting in July,
Valve plans to offer a free
update that adds social
networking services like
personal pages and gamer
profiles, groups, game
scheduling, the option to see
who's played what games (or
with whom), and both voice and
text-based chat. The services
work across all existing
titles, old or new. And for
all that, you'll only have to
pay? Absolutely nothing.
Microsoft Live currently
has Halo 2 and Shadowrun, the
former an oldie (if goodie),
the latter a middling
multiplayer-only shooter.
Steam has Half-Life, Half-Life
2 (plus all the upcoming
episodes), Medieval 2: Total
War, Trackmania, Civilization
4, Hitman: Blood Money, Sid
Meier's Pirates,
Counter-Strike, Geometry Wars,
Sam & Max, The Movies, DEFCON,
and several dozen more
critically well-received
games...

adults over the age of 65 who play video games, nearly a third play video games every day. In comparison, the survey found that only 20% of young
adults play video games every day. A persons age is also a factor in whether they play on a computer, games console or other device, such as a mobile

Browser Face-Off: Battery Life Explored
AnandTech: What we are going to look at today is the impact of your choice of browser on battery life, plain and simple. Except, coming up with a
benchmark is neither plain nor simple. We have used several different methods for testing battery life on laptops, and depending on the type of
content you're viewing battery life ranges from nearly equal to what you can expect at idle down to roughly the same amount of battery life you would
get when viewing high-definition videos. Like it or not, we feel that Adobe's Flash is used on many websites, and so we picked three websites that we
frequently visit and used those for our testing...

Second Life ... too much too soon
Attendees at this weekend's annual Second Life Community Convention will mostly agree on one thing: intense scrutiny has meant it's been a rough
ride for the virtual world lately.
At last year's SLCC in San Francisco, Second Life was still viewed by mass media as a quirky
hub for bizarre subcultures and utopian dreamers.
But circumstances have changed. The Second Life that will be the centrepiece of
2007's SLCC, an event almost twice as large as its predecessor in terms of attendance, is facing a different public perception as the most written
about and and sometimes the most reviled virtual environment (even though it's by no means the most popular).

SETI@home needs You!
SETI@home, the distributed computing project, is calling for more
volunteers willing to donate their computers' downtime to the project which scans radio telescope data for evidence of intelligent alien life.
Volunteers download a small programme which acts something like a screensaver - it kicks into life when your computer is not doing
anything. The software then crunches small parts of data from radio telescopes looking for patterns which could suggest intelligent life. Although
each individual computer does not achieve very much, using hundreds of computers means a lot of data can be analysed. SETI stands for the Search for
Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

Police to recruit 'tech-savvy' via Second Life
In a bid to keep up with the

Department is setting up a
recruitment seminar in the

'tech-savvy' recruits.
"It's important for us,

said Kevin McQuiggin, head of

Windows 7 will give your laptop longer battery life
It's no surprise that Windows 7 is getting good reviews and praise as the operating system is proving itself to be a rock solid platform. It
seems as the news is only getting better as Microsoft and Intel showed off how Windows 7 when paired up with Intel's new processor line will
increase battery life for laptops, according to PCMag.com. The two companies worked together to help develop technologies that will allow for
sustained performance while improving battery life in the next generation of Intel processors. "The dramatic leap in battery life appears tied to
a technology known as Windows 7 timer coalescing, a technical term for minimizing the time in which the processor enters a high-performance,
full-power state.

Lawsuit filed over virtual theft in Second Life
The first lawsuit between two Second Life users has been filed in New York, over the issue of someone stealing virtual items.
It's the case of Eros v. Simon. Linda Eros claims that Thomas Simon stole specific computer code to copy products she created and sells in the
virtual Second Life world.
It is not as absurd as it may seem at first. In Second Life, some people literally earn a living by
creating items like avatar clothing and accessories and selling them in their own shops. These items are paid for with real money, as in US
dollars.
Eros apparently specializes in creating adult-themed items. According to her lawsuit, her virtual products "built a
reputation within Second Life for performance, quality and value, and ... are among the best selling adult-themed virtual objects within Second
Life."
