04.11.2006Vista, MacBook Out--Only Linux Left in Hacking Contest
The MacBook Air went first; a tiny Fujitsu laptop running Vista was hacked on the last day of the contest; but it was Linux, running on a Sony Vaio,
that remained undefeated as conference organizers ended a three-way computer hacking challenge Friday at the CanSecWest conference.
<...> It took two days of work, but Shane Macaulay, finally cracked the Vista box on Friday, with a little help from his friends.
Macaulay, who was a co-winner of last year's hacking contest, needed a few hacking tricks courtesy of VMware researcher Alexander Sotirov to make
his bug work. That's because Macaulay hadn't been expecting to attack the Service Pack 1 version of Vista, which comes with additional security
measures. He also got a little help from co-worker Derek Callaway.

The software that police and

The San

Government groups around the world are becoming increasingly involved in efforts to launch and defend against web-based attacks, security experts
warn. A new report from McAfee, conducted in association with several law enforcement and security research bodies, claims that a new 'cold
war' is taking place on the internet.
The security firm cited recent attacks on Estonian government sites, and allegations of web
attacks conducted by China, as examples of how cyber-attacks could take a part in global conflicts. "The nature of the equaliser that is the
internet has dawned on people," said Dave Marcus, security research and communications manager at McAfee. "It is dawning on a lot of places
that maybe they don't need a mole some place." Marcus told vnunet.com that levels of preparedness within governments varies greatly.

A researcher at Microsofts closed-door Blue Hat summit last week demonstrated how seemingly mundane information available online about an individual
or a business can be used against them in a targeted attack.
Roelof Temmingh, founder of
Paterva, demonstrated how hackers dont need traditional hacking tools given all of the information thats freely available about
people and organizations on the Internet. With a little reconnaissance and the use of a handy information-collection, correlation, and visualization
tool he built called Maltego, Temmingh showed how an attacker wouldnt have to bother with a port scan or other hacking tools to hack a person or a

If you go into this with the right mindset, you can end up with a card that's just as good as those pricey overclocked ones. But
remember that you won't be able to return the card for repair if something goes wrong. If that thought gives you the willies, we recommend paying
a few bucks more for a factory overclocked card.

13.12.2007Gary McKinnon faces life sentence for hacking into Pentagon
When he wakes up on Sunday morning, Gary McKinnon will be 72 hours from learning whether he is on the fast track to a 60-year prison sentence, thanks
to his obsession with aliens. McKinnon (42) from Enfield in north London, is accused by American prosecutors of illegally accessing top-secret
computer systems in what they claimed in one legal document was "the biggest military computer hack of all time".
The self-taught IT
expert insists he was simply looking for information the US government had on UFOs and is adamant that he never damaged any of its computer systems.
This argument, however, cuts little ice with the Americans, who are trying to extradite him. Five years after being told by British police that he
would probably get a six-month community service order for his exploits, McKinnon finds himself still wanted by the US authorities. A 2006 High Court
ruling granted the extradition request, and on Wednesday the House of Lords will decide on McKinnon's appeal against that ruling.
