Rockstar to Release GTA IV Patch Soon

Flustered Grand Theft Auto IV players can take a deep sigh of relief today as Rockstar Toronto announced that a patch for the buggy title will be out "in the next few days".

The statement explained that the patch contains the following fixes:

- Fixed crash after the legal notice screen
- Improvements to the video editor
- Fix to bowling while using certain mice
- Fix for ATI 1900 shadows
- Overall savings to memory
- Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors
- Multiplayer character settings are preserved
- Support for DirectInput controllers

Rockstar says that the patch is complete, but as GTA IV is a Games for Windows Live title, it must first undergo quality assurance testing by Microsoft before it is released to the public. This begs the question: why was this not done with the initial release?

In the meanwhile, in collaboration with Rockstar, Nvidia has released new Beta drivers for it's cards which fixes several performance issues with the game (including the missing textures issue, so it seems). The drivers, version 180.84, can be downloaded from the link below. It should be noted that these drivers do not yet introduce SLI support in the game. ATI is also expected to release new drivers, Catalyst 8.12, on December 10th.

MS: 360 GTA IV Outselling PS3 Version 2-to-1

Microsoft tells Next-Gen that the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV is outselling the PlayStation 3 version by a wide margin in the US, but Sony questions Microsoft's claims.

"What we've heard anecdotally from our retail partners is that the Xbox 360 version of the game is outselling the PS3 version by a margin of two-to-one," said Aaron Greenberg, director of product management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live during an interview Thursday.

"That mirrors what we saw with pre-orders, but it continues to hold true at retail, at least for the first couple of days. It's a great sign."

Consoles: Xbox 360 tops PS3, but just barely

It doesn't get much closer than this: Microsoft's Xbox 360 beat out the PlayStation 3 in U.S. console sales for April, but only by a whisker -- 188,000 units to 187,100 units, according to NPD Group data released this afternoon. As reported here earlier today, Nintendo's Wii dominated the market again, with 714,200 units sold.

The month included the April 29 launch of "Grand Theft Auto IV," and the Xbox 360 version of the game was the top-selling title for the month, with 1.85 million units of the game sold for the Microsoft console. The PlayStation 3 version of GTA IV sold an even 1 million units.

Microsoft Cuts Xbox 360 Price in Europe

Microsoft Corp. said Monday it is slashing the price of the Xbox 360 in Europe by 80 euros (about $123) to widen the market for the consoles ahead of the launch of "Grand Theft Auto IV," one of the year's most highly anticipated games.

Microsoft did not say it had plans to cut prices in the U.S.

GTA IV, from Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., hits store shelves next month. Last August, Microsoft cut Xbox prices in both continents, timed to coincide with the launch of "Madden NFL 08," another blockbuster game.

The lowest-priced Xbox 360 Arcade console, which does not come with a hard drive but includes 256 megabytes of storage, will cost 199.99 euros ($307) beginning Friday - 80 euros lower than its current estimated retail price.

The 20 gigabyte console will now cost 269.99 euros ($415) and the Xbox 360 Elite, which comes with a 120 gigabyte hard drive, will cost 369.99 euros ($568).

"Xbox 360 is now mass market in Europe," said Chris Lewis, the vice president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business in Europe, in a statement. The console's gaming portfolio, he added, now offers "the kind of mainstream entertainment experiences that secure wider appeal for Xbox 360."

Take-Two delays "Grand Theft Auto IV"

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. on Thursday cut its 2007 sales forecast and said it would post a full-year loss, before one-time items, because it needs more time to complete its highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto IV" video game.

The company's shares slid 8 percent in extended trade following the announcement.

The game, which had been scheduled for release in October, is now planned for release in the fiscal second quarter of 2008, Take-Two said.

In a statement, Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick said "certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected."..

Comcast pays stand-ins to keep protesters out of FCC hearing

Comcast is being called to task by a lot of online activists over some pretty heavy-handed behavior the other day at an FCC hearing called on net neutrality to look into complaints that the cable giant was booting off consumers who it thought did too much online music downloading or file sharing with services like BitTorrent.

It happened Monday in Massachusetts. To apparently make sure the audience wasn't filled with protesters, Comcast now admits to hiring a bunch of guys to stand in line and take up all the spectator seats when the doors opened. That kept Comcast critics from an outfit known as SaveTheInternet.com from getting into the hearing room.
