4.11.2008Windows 7: Measuring the "superbar"
One of the new things that anyone would notice immediately in Windows 7 is the new Taskbar. Microsoft internally calls it 'Superbar'. The
Windows Taskbar has come a long way since Windows 95 was released. With the help of the Taskbar, it becomes easier to see what are the programs
currently running, switching between applications and also to access your favorites using the Quick Launch. Image Courtesy: Windows 7 Blog For
many, Windows 7's Superbar looks bigger than the Windows Vista's Taskbar. Long Zheng has taken steps to prove that, after all the Superbar is
not that big. Long has found that the Windows Start button is actually shrunk by about 8 pixels.

05.01.2009Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 2
In the first part of this series, we had a brief look into the history of the dock and Windows 7 superbar. Today, we will go through some of the basic
functionalities that both dock and superbar provide and have in common. The dock can hold any number of items and resize them dynamically to fit
while using magnification to clarify smaller resized items. Applications that do not normally keep icons in the dock will still appear when running
and remain until they are quit. Running items are distinguished by an indicator at the bottom of their respective icons. When you quit an
application whose icon resides in the dock, the indicator disappears.

05.03.2009Windows 7 Build 6801 has the Superbar, too
Microsoft deceived every PDC2008 attendee by saying that the build they handed out, build 6801, didn't have the new "superbar" taskbar replacement
that was being shown off throughout the conference.
Well, it turns out that it really is in the build, you just have to
be properly authenticated in Redmond. Rafael (
withinwindows.com) has decrypted this
mystery and has provided a patch (with instructions) that will enable the superbar on any 6801 install.

03.11.2008Oh yes, the Superbar is available in Windows 7 Build 6801
Wishing that the new "Superbar" was available for the PDC build of Windows 7? What about for your trusty copy of Vista? Well it isn't
available for Vista yet (I am sure someone will whip up someway of porting it over) but it is available to all users who have a copy of Windows 7
Build 6801.
Rafael, the well known Ux theme patcher, from
withinwindows.com, has uncovered how to bring this breakthrough feature available to anyone who is lucky enough to have Windows
7 build 6801. It does take some changing to the OS to enable this hidden feature but it is well worth it.
Windows 7's "Superbar" was
demonstrated heavily at Microsoft's PDC. For more information and full demonstrations checkout our
PDC section.

03.11.2008Superbar ENABLED In Windows 7 Build 6801
Chris Holmes: Yes, thats right folks. The one and only Rafael Rivera has figured out how to enable the new taskbar in Windows 7 build 6801. The
taskbar was there the whole time, but protected by some rather interesting checks that I find quite entertaining.

03.11.2008Rafael's at it Again
As a lot of people are aware, Rafael from Within Windows has been finding and exposing un-released Windows 7 features, most notably the "Superbar"
and Desktop Slideshows.
He has now created a full unlocking tool called "Blue Badge" that will unlock the following features:
- The Superbar
- Gestures and Panning (for use on touch screens)
- Desktop Slideshows
Please note two things:
1. This application does NOT back up any of the files it patches, so to be safe, you will need to back up these files:
WindowsExplorer.exe
WindowsSystem32wisptis.exe
WindowsSystem32ieframe.dll
WindowsSystem32shell32.dll
WindowsSystem32stobject.dll
WindowsSystem32TabletPC.cpl
WindowsSystem32themecpl.dll
WindowsSystem32themeui.dll
WindowsSystem32powercfg.cpl
-----------
2. This application IS compatible
with systems currently running the superbar who want to extend their desktop to allow the three other features.

10.11.2008Mac Dock and Windows 7 Superbar - Part 1
Mac Dock and Windows Taskbar Overview The Dock in OS X Leopard is a bar of icons that sits at the bottom or side of the screen, and employs a 3D
perspective. The Dock is a prominent feature of OS X. It is also a prominent feature of Mac OS X's predecessors NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP operating
systems. It is primarily a way to launch and switch between running applications. It not only provides easy access to applications, but allows the
user to organize them to their taste within the Dock. Any file or app can be attached to the Dock.

15.01.2009Tidbits about the new "superbar" taskbar
Long Zheng: Ever since the Windows 7 demo with Steven Sinofsky and Julie-Larson Green at PDC 2008 where they showed off the new superbar taskbar,
theres been a lot of questions about how the new taskbar will work, customized or tweaked.
Unfortunately because the pre-beta
build did not contain the new taskbar, its been hard to answer those questions. Fortunately I met up with Chaitanya Sareen today who took me through a
better tour of the new taskbar on one of the demo machines with the new build. Heres a few facts about the new taskbar.

31.10.2008Microsoft training video reveals older prototype of Windows 7 "superbar"
Long Zheng: Im glad at least someone is paying attention to the French. A couple of days ago
Anthony Cook
of blogofcookie.com noticed some interesting screenshots
from a presentation at the
Microsoft France training event "
TechDays 09" of what appeared to be a
different user-interface for Windows 7. However contrary to his speculation that this was to be the speculated theme refresh under wraps for Windows
7, it is in fact a screenshot of an old "superbar" prototype...

25.04.2009The New Taskbar in Windows 7
As we have noticed with the Windows 7 presentation at D6, Microsoft is putting in some efforts to make an update to the aging design of the taskbar,
contrary to the belief that they are going to make something completely new. The supposedly new name of the taskbar is the "Superbar." Long Zheng
has pointed out some of the new things:
"The first being the taskbar is higher than usual, but not as big as double-height. If I were to
guess, I'd say its somewhere around 1.75x-high. In the left corner, the Windows orb remains wedged "on top" of the taskbar - sticking its head out
a little - instead of in the center like it is today in Vista.
The taskbar also appears 'divided' into sections by variations in the
color (dark, gray, lighter) to indicate the different areas. Speaking of which, if you look at the far right corner, you'd notice that the tray
(icons & clock) is not touching the edge of the screen, and there's a small lighter gap. I have no explanation for this, but is well worth keeping an
eye on."

01.06.2008New UI features added to latest Firefox 3 nightly build
The latest
Firefox 3
nightly build includes a
revised interface for the
download
manager, which features
search functionality and
grouping for active and
completed downloads. Support
for
toolbar
element resizing,
native Vista
menus, and an integrated
Plugin manager have also been
added.
The new "Plugins"
category in the Add-ons
manager allows users to see
which plugins are installed
(previously one had to
navigate to about:plugins to
do this) and it also makes it
easy to toggle various plugins
like the Flash player.
The revised
download manager, which is
loosely based on mockups that
can be found at the Mozilla
wiki, still has some rough
edges. Despite aesthetic
weaknesses, the new features
are very promising. The search
box makes it easy to filter
the download list and support
for grouping downloads based
on whether they are active or
completed provides a tangible
improvement in organization.
Next to each active download,
the manager displays a
pause/resume button and a
cancel button. Next to
completed downloads, there are
icons for opening the file and
displaying information about
the file's origin and local
path. There are still plans to
add more sophisticated
filtering functionality to the
download manager in the
future.

28.01.2009Latest version of iLife debuts
Apple has just unveiled iLife
'08, the company's catch-all
software suite for
entertainment applications.
The new
package has all the same
applications, iPhoto, iMovie,
iWeb, and iDVD, that were seen
in the last version of iLife,
but the 2008 version expands
on the scope of the
entertainment functionality.
As part
of iPhoto, Events organizes
digital image collections by
placing them into event
categories. Basically,
instead of manually grouping
thousands of photos into
different folders, Events lets
users tag a photo as
"birthday", "wedding", or
even create a filter at a
later date by searching a
group of photos imported on a
specific date.

07.08.2007Measuring up Windows 7s new "super" taskbar
Long Zheng: For some users, one hurdle of the new "superbar" is its enormous size, or so it appears. To set the record straight, I conducted a
little side-by-side experiment with two quick-launch items and two active applications on both Vista and Windows 7. Together with a measuring tape in
one hand and a magnifying glass in the other, I counted. Soon enough, I grew impatient and resorted to Photoshop instead. Here's how they measured
up...

04.01.2009Microsoft launches 3-D wonder Photosynth for consumers
On Wednesday night,
Photosynth, a technology demo from
Microsoft Live
Labs, is graduating from its "ooh, that's pretty" status to being a viable Web service for consumers.
The technology,
which takes a grouping of photographs and stitches them into a faux 3D environment, can now be implemented with photos you've taken on your digital
camera or mobile phone, and converted right on your computer. Previously, the process of stitching these photos together took weeks of processing on
specially configured server arrays. With its latest version, Microsoft has managed to shrink that into around the time it takes to upload your
photos.

16.01.2009Shake up your Windows 7 with Aero Shake
One feature of the
Windows 7 user experience that
wasn't demoed or even talked about last week at PDC 2008 is called "Aero Shake" - the same feature that led Rafael on an epic journey to
unravel the secrets of build 6801
superbar. What Aero Shake does is allows you to shake your application windows furiously, to quickly minimize all other windows, at the same time
experiencing a seizure in your hand.

03.11.2008Itanium to gain Red Hat VM support and more
The imminent next version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux is to come with Xen virtualisation optimised for Itanium 2, Intel said today as part of a robust
defence of its server chip.
The hypervisor tweak will give Intels top-end part a shot at becoming the host of choice in server
consolidation projects, said Michael Demshki, Intel enterprise marketing manager and part of the Itanium Solutions Alliance, a grouping of supporters
that is just celebrating its second birthday.
Some people might be hesitant to have a web server alongside an ERP or HR system
on a virtualised server because they dont want the corporate crown jewels on the same system in case of a failure or malware traversing from one VM to
another, Demshki said. But with Itaniums RAS capabilities and electronically-isolated partitioning, the Red Hat Xen support is going to be a very
big deal.

20.09.2007Windows 7 Build 6801 Desktop Slideshow
Chris Holmes: Well folks, were at it again. Last night I was having a discussion with
Rafael Rivera and we got to wondering if there was something more that Microsoft was hiding away from us, using the same method
as they did to tuck away the superbar. With that said, I started crawling my system with some tools to find references, as Rafaels laptop was acting
up and my machine could accomplish the task much quicker. Completely to my suprise, the system pulled some results across many other files in the
system. Upon examination, Rafael discovered that this all ties into a new feature that we assume will be called Desktop Slideshow. Think of this
as a dreamscene-esque type feature but without the hassle and the chugging of your CPU if you try to play a video with any decent resolution.
