Two New Internet Explorers

Along with Beta 1 of Windows Vista, Microsoft has produced not one but two beta versions of Internet Explorer 7--one for Windows XP, and one in the Vista beta. The most exciting (and long overdue) innovation in both is tabbed browsing, which lets you open multiple Web pages in one browser window. You switch between the pages by clicking tabs in the IE 7 window. (The free MSN Search Toolbar adds tabs to IE 6.) Tabs have long been in Opera, and they're an attraction in Mozilla Firefox.

The History of Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is 10 years old this year, but its genealogical roots are actually much older. Back when the Internet was first invented (for want of a better word) it was used mainly by universities and research institutions to share documents and information via FTP, Gopher and Usenet. Casual usage as we know it today was a rarity. That, however, was to change as the World Wide Web slowly came into being, thanks to a gentleman by the name of Tim Berners-Lee who not only published the first formal proposal for the World Wide Web, but is also credited with publishing the first Web page on August 6, 1991.

This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

Internet Explorer 7 Supports Punycode

Microsoft developers have disclosed technical details of the internationalized domain names (IDNs) support in the coming beta version of Internet Explorer.

This support is meant to ensure that the browser treat domain names with characters from outside the ASCII range of characters the same way it treats their Punycode equivalents. With the aid of a new tab labeled "International" in the Internet Control Panel a user will be able to disable the IDN support.

Google, at age 10, is the official heart of the Internet

Born 10 years ago, the Google Internet search engine has grown into the electronic center of human knowledge by indexing billions of web pages as well as images, books and videos.

On September 15, 1997 Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two 24 year-old Stanford University students, registered the domain name of "google.com." The word is a variation of 'googol,' which refers to the number 10 to the power of 100, a term popularized by US mathematician Edward Kasner.

Page and Brin incorporated Google one year later, on September 7, 1998, in a household garage in northern California.

News of Google spread largely thanks to the efficient way the search engine classified results through algorithms, and it quickly became one of the most used methods to find information on the Internet...

Google's 9th Birthday

Two weeks ago, AFP informed us that "Google, at age 10, is the official heart of the Internet. Born 10 years ago, the Google Internet search engine has grown into the electronic center of human knowledge by indexing billions of web pages as well as images, books and videos." That's true, except that Google is 9 years old. Even if Larry Page and Sergey Brin registered the google.com domain in 1997, Google was officially launched one year later.

"Google opened its doors in September 1998. The exact date when we celebrate our birthday has moved around over the years, depending on when people feel like having cake," says Google's help center. You can read more about it directly from Google. In the recent years, Google's birthday has been celebrated on September 27th with a doodle displayed on the homepage. Happy birthday, Google!

Google calls Microsoft's bid for Yahoo 'hostile'

Google isn’t particularly happy about Microsoft’s recent proposition to acquire Yahoo. In fact, the company called the bid “hostile” and noted that the move would hurt the “openness of the Internet”. The search giant suggested that the move was anti-competitive and that it would only extend Microsoft’s monopoly, from the PC to the Internet: including services that both Internet giants dominate, such as instant messaging, web email, and Internet portals. Google emphasized that the interests of Internet users should come first, and that serious questions about the possible acquisition need to be asked.

Google ends ad agreement with Yahoo

Speculation grew last month when we reported that the Google-Yahoo ad deal may be over. In a post on the official Google Blog, Senior VP David Drummond announced today that, due to legal concerns, a possible ad partnership between search engines Google and Yahoo would not be coming to fruition after four months of review. According to Mr. Drummond, " pressing ahead risked not only a protracted legal battle but also damage to relationships with valued partners. "

Yahoo and Google both run fairly prominent web advertising divisions which help them generate revenue, and as internet usage increases, so too does the importance of effective advertisement. In June, there seemed to be a chance of mutual cooperation between the two companies: Google gave Yahoo the option of using Adsense on its websites, with perhaps even more on the way. However, this was not to be.

When the deal was first proposed, the two companies decided to wait a little bit and give regulators time to review the deal to avoid any possible negative consequences. But even after four months, regulators still have concerns about the agreement, and, in order to preserve the "long-term" interests of Google, the company has decided to call the deal off. However, should any of you worry that lawsuits may hinder future innovation, take heart: Mr. Drummond also stated that the company would never " let the prospect of a lengthy legal battle distract us from our core mission. That would be like trying to drive down the road of innovation with the parking brake on. "

Price cuts don't get to heart of Vista's problems, says analyst

If Microsoft thought a lower price for Windows Vista was what the operating system needed to kickstart sales, it should have thought twice, an analyst said early Friday.

"In some ways, it's an attempt to remove any barriers that may be dissuading people from buying Vista," said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland, Wash.-based research firm. "But the missing step here is simplifying what people need to know to buy. People are so confused about the versions and what they need on hardware that they don't even get to the price."

Google targeted in Chinese Internet crackdown

Google, alongside other popular web portals, was warned on Monday that they must do more to block pornographic content from reaching Chinese users, in the latest in a series of crackdowns on Internet content by the Chinese government. Chinese authorities published a list of 19 websites that have failed to get rid of unsuitable material. The list includes American search giant Google and China's top search engine Baidu. According to the BBC, one Chinese official said that the websites could be closed down if they fail to delete the offending material.

Google aims to speed up the entire Internet with SPDY

There are many aspects of technology that can be tweaked in order to speed a user's Internet experience up; web pages optimized, purchase a faster connection, or even just update software. Google has apparently bypassed all this, however… they aim to replace the HTTP protocol itself, with SPDY. As the Google blog post reminds us, "HTTP is an elegantly simple protocol that emerged as a web standard in 1996 after a series of experiments." It's been great so far, though with initial tests of SPDY (pronounced "speedy"), it shows that it can definitely be improved.

Microsoft's response to Google Chrome? SharePoint

It's surprising how many people are still asleep at the wheel while Microsoft continues to nurture perhaps its fastest-growing product (in terms of revenue) ever: SharePoint.
