Boot Camp: the day after

Now that Apple's Boot Camp is in the wild, there's very little to be said about booting into alternate operating systems on the Mac, right? Wrong! Because, not surprisingly, no sooner did Apple take the wraps off its little 30th birthday suprise, than Mac owners (or non-Mac owners who could cajole friends into lending them their Macs for a spell) began to put the Apple boot manager through its paces.

Microsoft Gives Developers 60-Day IE Extension

Microsoft is moving toward permanently modifying the way Internet Explorer renders multimedia content on Web pages, as part of the terms of its patent settlement with Eolas. Because the changes it is making have the potential to be disruptive, Microsoft is giving developers a one-time, 60-day extension to re-author certain Web pages, Microsoft told partners, in the hopes of warding off potential difficulties for pages and applications that make use of ActiveX. Microsoft will institute the required IE changes as part of a cumulative IE security update due out April 11.

Ants inspire new generation of security software

The way ants behave when their colony is under threat is the inspiration behind a new generation of network security software, which has been successfully deployed by security experts. By mimicking the behaviour of real ants, security experts hope this method will defeat computer worms faster than conventional security software. Glenn Fink, a research scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Washington, came up with the idea. In the natural world ants wonder about randomly, returning to the colony when they find a threat or food. On the way back, they leave a trail of pheromones. As other ants find the trail, they follow it and reinforce it.

IBM prints with molecules

Researchers at IBM and ETH Zurich have devised a way to print patterns with molecules. Using the technique, particles are precisely arranged on a soft, rubbery template. A glass or silicon plate is laid on top of the soft template, and the particles transfer to the glass or silicon.

The pattern on the solid substrate then can be exploited in a number of ways, according to Heiko Wolf, researcher in nano-patterning at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory. It can be used to mass-produce patterns. The picture included here is a reproduction of a 17th century drawing of the sun originally done by Robert Fludd. It was created by placing 20,000 gold particles, each about 60 nanometers in diameter, with the IBM-ETH technique. At 60 nanometers, each particle is one one-hundredth the size of a human blood cell. The technique could be used to place particles as small as 2 nanometers wide. (A nanometer is a billionth of a meter. A human hair is about 60 microns, or 60,000 nanometers, wide.)

IBM used the system to arrange gold particles onto a piece of silicon. The gold particles in turn served as a catalyst to make nanowires. Some believe nanowires could one day replace components in transistors...

Running the numbers on Vista

Sales of boxed copies of Windows Vista continue to significantly trail those of Windows XP during its early days, according to a soon-to-be-released report.

Standalone unit sales of Vista at U.S. retail stores were down 59.7 percent compared with Windows XP, during each product's first six months on store shelves, according to NPD Group. In terms of revenue, sales are also down, but the drop has been less steep, at 41.5 percent. The findings largely mirror the sales pattern NPD saw for Vista during its first week on the market in January.

"It's just not doing well," NPD analyst Chris Swenson said of Vista's performance at retail stores, though adding that most people get their OS on new PCs, with only a minority of customers purchasing boxed copies.

Microsoft also agreed that an analysis of boxed copy sales is not representative of Vista's momentum, noting the trend of people getting a new operating system with a new PC has further accelerated with Vista.

"While we can't comment on the findings of a report we haven't seen, we continue to be on track in all segments we follow," the company said in a statement to CNET News.com. "As of this summer, more than 60 million licenses have been sold."..
