19.12.2006We won't kill off the Xbox 360
In an interview with 1UP,
Microsoft's Shane Kim has
reassured gamers that the
company will not 'kill off'
the Xbox 360 as it did with
the original Xbox, and that it
hopes its current console will
have the staying power of
Sony's PS2.
"If
we could have a PS2-like tail,
that would be awesome for the
Xbox 360. I don't think
you're going to see the same
abrupt move to the
next-generation," Kim says.
"We'll have a much more
balanced approach when the
next-generation arrives."
Once the Xbox 360
launched worldwide at the end
of 2005, Microsoft had already
dropped all software support
for the Xbox and third parties
quickly followed suite -
though by its own admission
Microsoft never planned on
leading that particular
console race, and the decision
was made to launch its next
console ahead of the
competition.
"We
knew we weren't going to win
the last generation, so it's
not about 'How do we milk as
much money as we can out of
the last generation', it's
about how do we define the
future," says Kim. "That's
what winning the
next-generation is all
about."
