AMD Phenom X2 GE-Series Details Unveiled

AMD plans to cut power consumption of its mainstream Phenom X2 processors with the Phenom X2 GE-series, according to the companys latest roadmap. The Phenom X2 GE-series joins the Phenom X2 GS-series in late Q12008, after the Phenom X2 GS-series makes its debuts. AMD has three Phenom X2 GS-series in the pipeline with launches beginning in Q42007 and more models added in Q12008.

The new Phenom X2 GE-series match the recently released Athlon X2 BE-series in terms of thermal design power, or TDP, at 45-watts. AMD Phenom X2 GS-series processors have 65-watt and 89-watt TDP ratings. The low power Phenom X2 GE-series will have three models the GE-6600, GE-6500 and GE-6400.

AMDs Phenom X2 GE-6600 clocks in at 2.3 GHz, coincidentally, the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 clocks in at 2.4 GHz. The middle of the Phenom X2 GE-series consists of the 2.1 GHz Phenom X2 GE-6500 while the 1.9 GHz Phenom X2 GE-6400 occupies the bottom of the lineup. ..

New IBM supercomputer achieves petaflop

IBM has devised a new Blue Gene supercomputer--the Blue Gene/P--that will be capable of processing more than 3 quadrillion operations a second, or 3 petaflops, a possible record. Blue Gene/P is designed to continuously operate at more than 1 petaflop in real-world situations.

Blue Gene/P marks a significant milestone in computing. Last November, the Blue Gene/L was ranked as the most powerful computer on the planet: it topped out at 280 teraflops, or 280 trillion operations a second during continuous operation.

Put another way, a Blue Gene/P operating at a petaflop is performing more operations than a 1.5-mile-high stack of laptops. ..

Sony pitches blue-laser Compact Disc revival

Sony failed to tune the masses into its better-than-Compact-Disc format, Super Audio CD, so it's having another go, this time with technology derived from Blu-ray Disc.

Dubbed Blu-spec CD, the system uses a blue laser to write the audio data rather than a red laser. And... er... that's it. The format delivers exactly the same recording capacity as a CD and uses the audio encoding mechanism enshrined in the CD bible, the so-called Red Book.

The upshot: Blu-spec CDs can be played in old-style CD and DVD players, Sony Music Entertainment (SME), the giant's Japanese audio operation, said yesterday.

Blue Screen of Death Survival Guide: Every Error Explained

Picture this: Its late at night, youre sitting at your computer playing a game or working on a project when, suddenly, Windows freezes completely. All your work is gone, and you find a blue screen full of gibberish staring back at you. Windows is dead, Jim, at least until you reboot it. You have no choice but to sigh loudly, shake your fist at Bill Gates and angrily push the reset button. Youve just been visited by the ghost of windows crashed: The blue screen of death.

Also known as the BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death appears when Windows crashes or locks up. Its actually a Windows stop screen, and is designed to do two things: tell you the reason for the error, and to calm your nerves, hence the use of the color blue (studies show it has a relaxing effect on people). Though Blue Screens are difficult to decipher, all the information you need to figure out what caused it is right there in front of you in blue and whiteand thats where we come in. Were going to show you how to dissect the blue screen error details, so you can fix the problem thats causing them.

Blue Jean Dye Kills Cancer Cells

The dye in your blue jeans could soon be used to kill cancer cells, say scientists.

UK researchers are employing tiny gold "nanoparticles", 1/5000th the thickness of a human hair, to deliver the chemical compound directly into cancer cells, tearing them apart instantly. The common dye found in blue jeans and ballpoint pens is called phthalocyanine and is a light-activated, or photosensitive, agent with cell-destroying properties.

This has been known for at least 15 years but, until now, scientists have not been able to successfully deliver it into cells; hence there's no harm in wearing blue jeans. The University of East Anglia (UEA) team used the gold particles as "trojan horses". Their small size enables them to easily enter cells, and the phthalocyanine is taken up along with them.

When pulsed with laser light, the compound produces a highly reactive form of oxygen which causes the cancer cells to commit suicide. UEA's Dr David Russell explained: "Because this compound does not dissolve in water, it is difficult to get it into cells. But this 'fat soluble' property is precisely what makes it a great potential therapy. "We have shown using nanotechnology that we can get phthalocyanine into the cancer cells where it binds and, on activation, causes substantial cell death," he told the British Association's Science Festival.

True blue for OLED screens discovered

Blue, the color that has been holding back OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen technology may be one giant step closer to production. Previously scientists were only able to reproduce red and green OLED's but had stumbled upon finding a material for true blue OLEDs. No longer is that the case as a group of researchers in Korea have claimed to have discovered the true blue OLED. This means that we will hopefully have consumer OLED products on the market sooner rather than later. Why is having OLED on the market important? OLED products have greater field of vision, better color quality and require less power. Overall it's a better value for the consumer and the environment.

Breakthrough in Blue Lasers Yields 10X Write Times

Nichia Corporation of Japan has announced a new blue-violet laser that can fill up a 54GB double-layer disc at more than 10X record speed, compared to typical 2x and 4x Blu-ray/HD-DVD format disc recorders. In other words, instead of a 50 minute write-time at 2x, the future holds a 10 minute write-time at 10x. According to blue laser expert Steven DenBaars, the key to faster write times lies in the power of the laser. Faster burn times allow the disc to be rotated at a higher speed. A 2X device can sustain a write speed of only 8.99 Mbps, while a 10X laser disc recorder can achieve a writing velocity of 44.9 Mbps.

Nichia's new blue-violet semiconductor laser diodes can reportedly operate at 320 mW (milliwatts), while the average current consumer grade blue laser devices are in the range of 20mW. " Writing speed is totally dictated by the output power. The more power you have, the faster you can spin the disk ," DenBaars said. The UCSB team, led by blue laser inventor and former Nichia researcher Shuji Nakamura, recently demonstrated the world's first nonpolar blue-violet laser diodes. The technology, which is still two to four years away, could eventually produce blue laser diodes that operate in the range of 500 mW.

'Universal' Next-Gen DVD Players On Way

The missing consumer link in the move to HDTV is a universal DVD player that would accommodate both the new HD DVD and Blue-ray formats. Such a player could be coming soon, thanks to Broadcom Corp., which on Thursday unveiled a system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution that aims to be a foundation for companies looking to build dual-format player.

The Broadcom single-chip BCM7440 Blue-ray/HD DVD SoC features a software stack complaint with both of the warring DVD specifications. Will there be a universal player, Doug Grearson, Broadcom senior marketing manager, was asked. "The short answer is, absolutely," Grearson said. "It helps that the two formats are fairly close to begin with. Once you can read the disks you have reduced it to reading bitstreams."
