GE shows 500GB holographic storage prototype

General Electric on Monday announced it is working on a holographic storage medium that resembles a typical optical disc and allows it to store the equivalent of 100 DVDs, the NY Times reported this weekend. Holography, used for the three-dimensional images on some older credit cards for security, can also store binary data in the form of 1s and 0s. The next step involves GE making the technology usable in hardware that can be mass-produced at affordable prices.

AMD Quietly Starts to Sell Dual-Core Phenom Microprocessors

Advanced Micro Devices has quietly started to sell dual-core microprocessors featuring the latest K10 micro-architecture in Europe, at least, based on the results from a search engine. If the information is correct and AMD is shipping its Phenom X2 parts for revenue, then the chipmaker may attract additional attention to its microprocessor line among price-conscious buyers looking for modern tech.

According to a screenshot taken on Geizhalz.at price search engine in Europe and published by Hardware-Infos web-site, AMD has started shipping AMD Phenom X2 GE-6400 (1.90GHz, 1MB of L2 cache <512KB per core>, 2MB L3 cache), GE-6500 (2.10GHz, 1MB of L2 cache <512KB per core>, 2MB L3 cache) and GE-6600 (2.30GHz, 1MB of L2 cache <512KB per core>, 2MB L3 cache) microprocessors to channel customers.

Microsoft should seek internal CIO candidate

Stuart Scott had a stellar reputation when Microsoft recruited him in 2005 to be its CIO.

Scott had survived-and thrived-for 17 years inside GE, a company known for forced ranking even its best managers out of the organization to make room for fresh blood, and for its associations with management discipline and Six Sigma quality process improvements. Scott himself is a Six Sigma black belt and a graduate of GE's prestigious leadership development program. He was so well respected in the company that GE CIO Gary Reiner welcomed Scott back to the company after his brief stint with Webvan ended with the online grocer's bankruptcy.

That's why Reynold Lewke, an executive recruiter with Egon Zehnder International, was shocked when he heard that Microsoft had fired Scott. Lewke says he doesn't remember ever seeing a statement about an executive termination from Microsoft like the one the company released about Scott.

Happy 40th Birthday Unix!

This August, Unix is celebrating it's 40th birthday, and it's worth noting that an operating system that old, has been used every decade of it's existence - and still is. In fact, Unix is gathering more and more attention as the years go by. Unix was conceived at Bell Labs after AT&T, MIT and GE stopped production on a major project that was an attempt to create an operating system called Multics. Unixs' purpose was to make better use of mainframe computers and to have them serve many PC's at one time.

Google Earth Flight Simulator

Some time last week, Google expanded Google Earth with Google Sky. As fascinating as Google Sky is, that's not the focus of this post. Along with the latest update comes a hidden feature of which I cannot seem to find any other information about. It's not in the release notes and a search on Google produces no results. Seems Google have done one of their unpublicised updates they're becoming well-known for.

What I'm talking about is a flight simulator embedded within GE. Sounds awesome, doesn't it? If the thought amazes you as much as it did me, then you might have run off and tried it for yourself. But there's a problem. Remember what I said above - it's a hidden feature!

Apple May Need to Play Better with Others

If this year's Macworld Conference & Expo follows form, Apple (AAPL) Chief Executive Steve Jobs will pull the curtain back on a new device or two that will capture the consuming public's fancy. Early word, for example, is that he'll announce a slick new sub-notebook that, if successful, could help make mainstream a product that until now has occupied only a niche. That's what Apple did for digital music players with the iPod and for smartphones with the iPhone.

But for Apple to make the most of its peerless products, experts say it will need to improve relations with the folks who create the content to run on them, especially after the series of spats that marked 2007. Recall the refusal by Universal Music Group, the world's largest record label, to re-up its long-term contract to supply music to Apple's iTunes Store, or the move by General Electric's (GE) NBC Universal to pull its TV shows from iTunes.

Unsplit, Microsoft would be worth about $8,928 a share

Q: What would the price of Microsoft (MSFT) stock be today if it had never split?

A: Readers have been asking a lot of questions like this one. For some reason, some investors want to see what many stocks' prices would be had the companies not split their shares.

First some background. A stock split occurs when a company cuts its share price by issuing additional shares. Stock splits change the number of shares you own, but they don't have any direct effect on the company's market value or the total value of your holdings. You can read more about stock splits here.

Mail merge feature added to Google Apps

Just weeks after unveiling offline capabilities to its Google Apps collection of services, the company Monday added a mail migration feature that lets corporate users transfer existing mail to the online platform.

The mail merge feature is available for the Google Apps' Premier and Education editions. Google has developed a self-service wizard that lets administrators securely transfer into their Google Apps account e-mail from any e-mail server that supports IMAP.

The two most-used corporate e-mail servers -- Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes -- support IMAP interfaces.

Google officials said the mail merge capabilities will support Exchange 2003, but that Notes is yet to be tested with the software.

Intel has worlds fastest Si-Ge Photo detector

On the morning of Day Zero at IDF Mario Paniccia, an Intel Fellow and Director of the Photonics Technology Lab, told attendees that Intel has developed a silicon- and germanium-based photo detector that can detect laser light signals at speeds of over 40 Gbits/sec.

At this speed, the company claims that it is the worlds best performing Silicon Germanium photo detector.

Photo detection, or fibre optic communication as many of you will know it as, involves the process of converting optical data into electrical data. In the past though, fibre optics got a reputation for being an expensive and specialised solution to the problem.

This prompted Intel to start researching silicon photonics, which involves manufacturing fibre optic components from silicon. While silicon is opaque in the visible spectrum of light, its transparent at infrared wavelengths, meaning it can guide light. However, silicon cannot absorb light, which presents a problem.

Whats next on Microsofts search agenda?

Its been three months since Satya Nadella took over as Corporate Vice President in charge of Microsofts Search & Advertising Platform Group. Whats he been up to?

œIve been focusing on learning, said Nadella, with whom I had chance to chat on July 27 at his office on the Redmond campus. œI had been with MBS (Microsoft Business Solutions) for a while and had forgotten what it means to change groups here. But Ive been focused on building the team with a focus on collaboration.

Nadella, who was named as the head of Microsofts combined Search and Ad Platform Group in March 2007, also is shepherding his team through a planned fall Search update, as well as an upcoming Spring search refresh. Nadella said his goal is to do a major search refresh twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, for the foreseeable future. In between these updates, Microsoft will continue to roll out incremental search improvements, such as the new facial-detection search functionality it recently added to its Live Image Search.

Google to enter China online music sector

Google Inc plans to enter the online music market in China for the first time, as it steps up its battle with local incumbent Baidu.com Inc, media reported on Thursday. Google is expected to announce a joint venture with Top100.cn, to allow users to listen to and download licensed music files for free, major portal Sina.com said, citing local newspaper reports based on sources close to the U.S. firm.

The joint venture expects to generate revenue through online advertisements on the music search pages, Sina added.

A spokeswoman for Google in China said she did not comment on rumours or speculation. Top 100 was set up with initial capital of 20 million yuan ($2.78 million) by Chinese basketball star Yao Ming, Yao's agent Zhang Mingji, and industry professional Ge Chen, Sina said.

Chinese Internet firms such as Baidu have built up their popularity by providing search services for and access to music files, or mp3s, many of which are pirated. This has drawn the ire of international music industry heavyweights.

OEMs None Too Happy with 'Vista Effect'

It's a challenge to find signs that anyone other than Redmond will say that the uptake of Windows Vista is going gangbusters. A couple of weeks ago, computer maker Acer took the opportunity to directly bash Vista when it had to lower profit forecasts. Customers just weren't interested.

Today, Tom's Hardware reports that a poll of resellers found a serious lack of enthusiasm for the operating systems effect on business since the enterprise launch in November. All segments of buyers, the OEMs say, want to wait. Problems with drivers and software compatibility, not to mention necessary hardware upgrades, have put the kibosh on a rush to roll out the operating system. In fact, tellingly enough, if theyre not ordering XP-loaded machines (or cant for some reason), theyre sometimes rebuilding Vista machines with an XP machine. Now thats rejection.

And a NotebookReview.com piece says you can see that this rejection is real by looking at a few other details. Dell and HP offer XP and Linux systems to both consumer and enterprise markets because theyre selling. Actually, theyre not just selling, theyre first being requested by customers, so its a trend that doesnt show signs of slowing...
