"Father of DVD" blasts Sony's Blu-Ray plans
Warren Lieberfarb, who is known as the "Father of DVD" for his efforts to standardize the format while president of Warner Home Video, spoke yesterday at the European Video Perspectives conference about Sony, Blu-Ray, and the battle for the next video format.

Pioneer has developed an optical disc that can hold up to 400GB of data, easily surpassing previously announced prototypes (see "

The new disc manages to pack 16 layers, each with a 25GB capacity, into a conventional 12-centimeter diameter
optical disc. The new discs are similar to
Blu-ray Disc technology and slight
changes to the hardware on a Blu-ray drive would allow the new Pioneer discs to be used on one.

In another loss for the HD-DVD camp, US retailer Wal-Mart today announced that its 4,000 stores (including Sam's Clubs) will move forward this
year with one hi-definition movie and hardware format: Blu-ray. The change will take place quickly over the next several months whereby the retailer
will phase out HD DVD offerings and reorganize shelf space. By June, Wal-Mart stores, Sam’s Clubs, www.walmart.com and www.samsclub.com will
offer only Blu-ray movies and hardware machines, as well as standard definition movies and DVD players, and up converts.

NY Times reported this weekend. Holography, used for the three-dimensional images on some older credit cards for security, can also store

derived from Blu-ray Disc.
Dubbed Blu-spec CD, the system uses a blue laser to write the audio data rather than a red laser. And... er...
that's it. The format delivers exactly the same recording capacity as a CD and uses the audio encoding mechanism enshrined in the CD bible, the
so-called Red Book.
The upshot: Blu-spec CDs can be played in old-style CD and DVD players, Sony Music Entertainment (SME), the giant's
Japanese audio operation, said yesterday.

Previously scientists were only able to reproduce red and green OLED's but had stumbled upon finding a material for true blue OLEDs. No longer is
that the case as a group of researchers in Korea have claimed to have discovered the true blue OLED. This means that we will hopefully have consumer
OLED products on the market sooner rather than later. Why is having OLED on the market important? OLED products have greater field of vision,

blue-violet laser that can
fill up a 54GB double-layer
disc at more than 10X record
speed, compared to typical 2x
and 4x Blu-ray/HD-DVD format
disc recorders. In other
words, instead of a 50 minute
write-time at 2x, the future
holds a 10 minute write-time
at 10x. According to blue
laser expert Steven DenBaars,
the key to faster write times
lies in the power of the
laser. Faster burn times allow
the disc to be rotated at a
higher speed. A 2X device can
sustain a write speed of only
8.99 Mbps, while a 10X laser
disc recorder can achieve a
writing velocity of 44.9
Mbps.
Nichia's new
blue-violet semiconductor
laser diodes can reportedly
operate at 320 mW
(milliwatts), while the
average current consumer grade
blue laser devices are in the
range of 20mW. " Writing
speed is totally dictated by
the output power. The more
power you have, the faster you
can spin the disk ,"
DenBaars said. The UCSB team,
led by blue laser inventor and
former Nichia researcher Shuji
Nakamura, recently
demonstrated the world's
first nonpolar blue-violet
laser diodes. The technology,
which is still two to four
years away, could eventually
produce blue laser diodes that
operate in the range of 500
mW.
