OneCare places 16th in antivirus test, 13th in spyware.

Virus Bulletin this month released the results of a major comparative of the latest security products, covering a range of metrics. These include detection rates over various types of malware, false positive rates, scanning speed, proactive detection, and response times to outbreaks.

Taking a look at the first one, detection rates, it's clear that a beta version of GDATA's AVK 2009 (which uses the Avast and BitDefender scan engines) took first place for both malware (measured against 1,164,662 samples) as well as ad- and spyware (94,291 samples). Avira's Premium Security Suite 2008 was second for malware, F-Secure 2009 was second in ad- and spyware, and Secure Computing's Webwasher gateway product came third in both categories.

he most interesting data to emerge from this measurement (4 week span) was that the 2009 version of Norton topped the table with an impressive 6,202 incremental micro-updates, issued several times per hour, while Kaspersky came a distant second with a mere 696. Half of the 34 products tested had fewer than 100, including those from McAfee (21) and Trend Micro (30)

Measuring up Windows 7s new "super" taskbar

Long Zheng: For some users, one hurdle of the new "superbar" is its enormous size, or so it appears. To set the record straight, I conducted a little side-by-side experiment with two quick-launch items and two active applications on both Vista and Windows 7. Together with a measuring tape in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other, I counted. Soon enough, I grew impatient and resorted to Photoshop instead. Here's how they measured up...

Opinion: Windows 7's UAC is a broken mess; mend it or end it

Peter Bright: I wrote a few weeks ago about changes Microsoft has made to Windows 7's User Account Control (UAC) that make the component less secure than it was in Vista. Though the company has responded by saying it will change some of the problem behaviors, yet more problems have emerged that indicate that a real fix will be harder than first expected. But more than that, the flaws call into question the entire purpose of the Windows UAC feature, at least in its commonplace "Admin Approval" mode...

Windows Live Messenger Goes Final and More

After a year in the making, the Windows Live Messenger production has come to an end, and to the delight of thousands of people.

The Download Page has been updated with build 353 (the final version) and is available for download now. It hasn't been extensively tested yet, but it's presumable that the countless bugs testers received in previous betas have been resolved; most notably several serious problems that were spotted when running it with Windows 7.

Complimenting the release of WLM 2009, the "Messenger Plus!" team has announced a release of the compatible (build 4.80) version of the patcher to be before the end of the month.

This seems promising. Hopefully the two will work well together, and we can FINALLY get what we've been asking for in the entire WLM experience.

Windows 7 beta download imminent?

Microsoft have updated their Windows 7 site with a download link for the Windows 7 beta. It's entirely possible that once the page is live it will simply be a sign up page to register your interest. Microsoft will not comment on the exact date and a Microsoft official confirmed the beta is still targetted for early 2009.
