MySpace asked for names of registered sex offenders

Attorneys general from eight states want MySpace to turn over the names of potentially thousands of registered sex offenders who may be members of its popular social networking site. In a May 14 letter to MySpace, the attorneys general from Connecticut, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania said they are "gravely concerned" that sexual predators are using the Web site to lure children to meet them offline. They asked MySpace to tell them how many registered sex offenders they've identified on the site and what the company is doing to remove them.

The officials also want to know what MySpace has done to alert its users who have communicated with the sex offenders as well as what the company has done to alert law enforcement. They gave MySpace until May 29 to respond. The attorneys general said they believe that data from Sentinel Tech Holdings, a company working with MySpace to identify sex offenders, indicates that thousands of sex offenders are MySpace members. "MySpace is a treasure-trove of potential victims for child predators," said North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper. "Sex offenders have no business being on this site, and we believe MySpace has a responsibility to get them off the site."

Sex offenders must turn over Internet passwords

Sex offenders who live in the state of Georgia have lost a lot more privacy. A new law that went into effect today requires all offenders not only give authorities their Internet email address and screen names but also the passwords too. Georgia is not the first state to enact such legislation. Utah was the first to require passwords as well as Internet handles to be turned over to authorities; there are currently 15 states that require email address and user names be turned over but not all require passwords. State Senator Cecil Staton told MSNBC, "We limit where they can live, we make their information available on the Internet. To some degree, we do invade their privacy ...

Microsoft, Google, Yahoo Sued for Sex Selection Ads in India

Microsoft, Google and Yahoo were issued notices by India's Supreme Court on Wednesday, following a complaint that they were promoting techniques and products for the selection of an unborn child's sex through advertising and links on their search engines. There is a deliberate attempt by these companies to target Indian users with advertisements that claim to help in the selection of a child's sex, said Sabu Mathew George, the petitioner in the case, in a telephone interview on Thursday.

The three companies were unavailable for comment, despite repeated phone calls to Yahoo in Bangalore, Google in Hyderabad and Microsoft in Delhi. The advertisement of products and techniques to aid in the selection of an unborn child's sex is an offense under India's "The Pre-conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act". In India, at least 900,000 unborn girls die each year through feticide, said George who is a social activist associated with organizations fighting for the rights of young girls in India.

Facebook Subpoenaed Over Sexual Predator Complaints

The New York Attorney General has subpoenaed Facebook after the company did not respond to "many" complaints by investigators who were solicited for sex while posing as teenagers on the social-networking site. State investigators, who set up profiles as 12- to 14-year olds, said they were quickly contacted by other Facebook users with comments such as " u look too hot....... can i c u online, " " do you like sex? " and " call me if u want to do sex with me. " Investigators said that when they wrote to Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook about their experiences, the concerns were ignored "many" times.

" My office is concerned that Facebook's promise of a safe Web site is not consistent with its performance in policing its site and responding to complaints, " said Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. " Parents have a right to know what their children will encounter on a Web site that is aggressively marketed as safe. " On Monday, Cuomo publicly released a letter to Facebook about its safety claims with concerns based on several "undercover tests" in recent weeks. The subpoenas seek complaints made to the company and copies of its policies though the investigation is still in the early stages.
