12.10.2005Microsoft Portable Media Center, RIP: 2004 - 2006
David Bono, a Microsoft
employee, has posted in the
microsoft.public.windows.media
center.portable newsgroup to
confirm the demise of the
Portable Media Center
(PMC).
"Microsoft
is no longer licensing the PMC
software. Here is an
announcement that was sent out
last year to our PMC
partners:
In early
2006, Microsoft released the
second version of Windows
Mobile for Portable Media
Centers to our partners. The
second version of the Portable
Media Center software enhanced
the end user experience and
enabled partners to build
smaller, less expensive and
more competitive devices.
As part of the ongoing
review of our product
investments, we have decided
to take what we have learned
from our investments in
Portable Media Center and
focus our product and
marketing resources on
building media experiences on
connected Windows Mobile
powered devices.
With the re-investment of
resources in media experiences
on connected Windows Mobile
powered devices, Portable
Media Center 2.0 is the last
version of our Portable Media
Center software under the
Windows Mobile brand. We do
not plan any future Portable
Media Center software upgrades
or marketing activities.
Thank you for all your
support- Microsoft is proud of
its work, the work of its
partners and the devices and
services delivered as a result
of those relationships. We
will continue to work with
existing Portable Media
Centers licensees to ensure
that devices they are
developing come to
market."

After an in-depth analysis of
the four reported incidents,
Gateway took proactive

03.02.2007Gateway strikes at iMac with new all-in-one PC
In the wake of last month's
aluminum iMac launch, Gateway has cooked up a
new all-in-one PC aimed at stealing the Apple system's thunder. As
MacNN reports, the Gateway system is called the Gateway One, and like the iMac, it sports an integrated wide-screen display
(albeit only a 19" model, compared to the iMac's 20" and 24" displays.) The Gateway One is also just 3.6" deep, and it has a sleek black front
bezel that conceals the monitor's edges and reaches all the way down onto the user's desk.
MacNN says the base Gateway One will
become available in late October in two retail models and one variant that'll only be available online. The first retail model will have a 1.5GHz
Core 2 Duo processor, integrated Intel X3100 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a $1,300 price tag. The second retail model will cost
$1,800 and pack a speedier 2GHz Core 2 Duo, Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphics, 3GB of RAM, and 500GB of storage capacity. Last, but not least, the
online-only model will cost $1,500 and have the same specs as the $1,300 model save for Radeon HD 2600 graphics and a 400GB hard drive.
All three systems will have built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a slot-loading DVD burner, FireWire, and a 5-in-1 flash card reader.
