First Looks at Windows Vista Media Center

Microsoft's Media Center Edition of Windows XP has had a hard time. Though it's hard to call it a poor seller, MCE certainly has a market penetration that represents only a tiny fraction of the many millions of computers running Windows XP. And why should it? Most users don't have nice hi-def TVs hooked up to their PCs, or TV tuners, or really any need to enjoy their music, video, and TV stored on their PC via a 10-foot user interface. It doesn't help that the first edition of Media Center wasn't very good, either. Then again, Microsoft bounced back with its second effort, Media Center Edition 2005, one of the most improved software products ever.

Gateway recalls notebook batteries

Gateway is recalling 14,000 lithium-ion notebook batteries, the company said Tuesday.

The announcement comes after four reports of Gateway notebooks overheating over the last few years. One of the incidents caused "minor property damage," according to Gateway. The batteries in question are used in two models of its notebooks, the 400VTX and 450ROG, sold in the U.S. between May and August 2003.

"The root cause of this battery failure became apparent as the batteries aged and performed repetitive recharging cycles. After an in-depth analysis of the four reported incidents, Gateway took proactive measures to launch a voluntary battery exchange program in the interest of customer safety," said company spokeswoman Lisa Emard. ..

Maxell focuses on holographic storage

Information storage media company Maxell has said it will launch its first holographic storage products in September 2006. The first removable drive will have a capacity of 300GB and a throughput of 160mbps.

H olographic storage works by storing information using light-sensitive crystals. Because it uses the whole volume of the drive--whose prototype looks somewhat like a floppy disk--not just the surface, it's possible to store much more information than is possible on a DVD.

With a single holographic removable drive, or disk, able to store 1.6 million high-resolution color photos or more than 240 hours of TV broadcast, holographic storage is starting to draw the attention of many in the IT industry.

"Hologra phic media makes it possible for millions of pages of information and high-definition images to be held on one small, relatively inexpensive disk," said Steven Pofcher, senior marketing manager at Maxell. ..

Gateway strikes at iMac with new all-in-one PC

In the wake of last month's aluminum iMac launch, Gateway has cooked up a new all-in-one PC aimed at stealing the Apple system's thunder. As MacNN reports, the Gateway system is called the Gateway One, and like the iMac, it sports an integrated wide-screen display (albeit only a 19" model, compared to the iMac's 20" and 24" displays.) The Gateway One is also just 3.6" deep, and it has a sleek black front bezel that conceals the monitor's edges and reaches all the way down onto the user's desk.

MacNN says the base Gateway One will become available in late October in two retail models and one variant that'll only be available online. The first retail model will have a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo processor, integrated Intel X3100 graphics, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a $1,300 price tag. The second retail model will cost $1,800 and pack a speedier 2GHz Core 2 Duo, Mobility Radeon HD 2600 graphics, 3GB of RAM, and 500GB of storage capacity. Last, but not least, the online-only model will cost $1,500 and have the same specs as the $1,300 model save for Radeon HD 2600 graphics and a 400GB hard drive.

All three systems will have built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a slot-loading DVD burner, FireWire, and a 5-in-1 flash card reader.

Acer to Acquire Gateway for $710 million

Acer Inc., one of the world's leading branded PC vendors, announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Gateway, Inc. . Gateway is the fourth largest PC company in the US and a leading retail PC provider. The combination will create a multi-branded PC-company with over US$15 billion in revenues and shipments in excess of 20 million PC units per year.

Under the terms of the agreement, Acer will commence a cash tender offer to purchase all the outstanding shares of Gateway for $1.90 per share, which represents total equity value consideration of approximately $710 million. The acquisition has been unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both Gateway and Acer and is subject to standard closing conditions, including approval under Hart Scott Rodino, Exon Florio and similar laws outside the U.S. The acquisition is expected to close by December 2007.

Gateway earlier announced that it intends to exercise its Right of First Refusal to acquire from Lap Shun (John) Hui, all of the shares of PB Holding Company, S.ar.l, the parent company for Packard Bell BV -- a leading European PC vendor based in France. In addition, Gateway is currently in discussions with a third party with regards to a sale of its U.S. based Professional business...

Gateway to Sell Professional Business Unit

Gateway Inc., a struggling computer maker, said Wednesday it will sell its professional business unit to Nampa, Idaho-based computer maker and seller MPC Corp. in a deal valued at about $90 million. MPC will continue to offer Gateway Professional products but will move branding from the Gateway name to the MPC brand within a year. This news follows on an announcement last month where Gateway announced that it was being acquired for $710 million by Acer Inc. of Taiwan.

Under the deal announced today, MPC will take responsibility for operations and warranty support services at Gateway's professional business unit. Gateway will get a 19.9% stake in MPC after the deal closes. As part of the agreement, MPC said it will issue a promissory note to Gateway with a principal amount of about $10 million as of last Tuesday, payable to Gateway within six months of the deal's closing, with a final value based on factors such as the amount of inventory Gateway delivers when the deal is completed. The companies expect the transaction to close in the fourth quarter.

Neowin at Digital Life 2007: Gateway One

Looking at the Gateway One, it's pretty easy to see where Gateway found their inspiration. At first glance, the thing almost looks like an iMac that fell into some glossy black paint. This is one of the few times, though, where one should look past the obvious copy cat design and look at what the system has to offer.

One of the most obvious details that Gateway loves to point out is the idea of only one single wire running out of the back of your PC. The One uses a single power cable which runs to a larger brick. The power brick has a trick up its sleeve, however. The power brick is home to an Ethernet connection and four USB connections (additional to the three present on the main unit of the One) which are designed to be used with more permanent connections such as a printer or whatever else the kids are connecting these days. It's a nice idea that can become handy very quickly.

Gateway plans to acquire Packard Bell

Gateway has agreed to take over the controlling stake in Packard Bell, the company announced Monday.

Gateway has exercised its right of first refusal to purchase all of the shares of PB Holding Company, the parent company of Packard Bell, from Lap Shun (John) Hui and Clifford Holdings Limited, also controlled by Hui. Both companies control 75 percent of Packard Bell stock. Financial detail of the transaction have not yet been disclosed.

The announcement wasn't a surprise--Gateway and Lenovo have waged a public battle over the Paris-based PC vendor--with Gateway announcing its intentions in September. (Recently, according to a Reuters report, Lenovo CEO Bill Amelio told reporters, "Packard Bell is a great fit, and we're still very interested. ... It's not over until it's over.")

Gateway announced its own acquisition last month, and future parent company, Acer, has agreed to fund the purchase of Packard Bell.
