Gateway recalls notebook batteries

Gateway is recalling 14,000 lithium-ion notebook batteries, the company said Tuesday.

The announcement comes after four reports of Gateway notebooks overheating over the last few years. One of the incidents caused "minor property damage," according to Gateway. The batteries in question are used in two models of its notebooks, the 400VTX and 450ROG, sold in the U.S. between May and August 2003.

"The root cause of this battery failure became apparent as the batteries aged and performed repetitive recharging cycles. After an in-depth analysis of the four reported incidents, Gateway took proactive measures to launch a voluntary battery exchange program in the interest of customer safety," said company spokeswoman Lisa Emard. ..

AMD is coming out with Phenom SKUs at last. The official roadmaps we've seen push it out another quarter from late Q3 to early Q1/08 on the desktop side.

TDPs are not officially listed.

The lower level classes will be ranked by class and series, with class being a two letter prefix and series being a 4 digit number. The classes are XY with Y=P being 89W TDPs and up, S at 65W and E at 45W...

AMD Kills Quad FX Platform

AMD diverts resources from the Quad FX platform development the same year it promises Quad FX is the enthusiast future.

AMD excited many technology enthusiasts last year when it introduced the Quad FX platform. AMD representatives touted this platform as the next big thing from AMD.

AMD apparently talked up its Quad FX enthusiast platform so well that Intel decided to roll out a competing product in its unreleased Skulltrail platform. When the Quad FX platform first hit market in January of 2007 it seemed doomed from the start to many with steep price premiums for the mainboards and the processors. These price premiums led to the lethargic adoption of the platform.

AMD Claims Quad-core Desktop CPUs Ready for Christmas

This week, AMD announced its quad-core desktop CPU codenamed Agena FX in Sunnyvale, California. The processor was featured in single and dual-socket configurations - the dual-socket configurations mark AMD's first demonstration of an 8-core desktop. Gateway to Sell Professional Business Unit

Gateway Inc., a struggling computer maker, said Wednesday it will sell its professional business unit to Nampa, Idaho-based computer maker and seller MPC Corp. in a deal valued at about $90 million. MPC will continue to offer Gateway Professional products but will move branding from the Gateway name to the MPC brand within a year. This news follows on an announcement last month where Gateway announced that it was being acquired for $710 million by Acer Inc. of Taiwan.

Under the deal announced today, MPC will take responsibility for operations and warranty support services at Gateway's professional business unit. Gateway will get a 19.9% stake in MPC after the deal closes. As part of the agreement, MPC said it will issue a promissory note to Gateway with a principal amount of about $10 million as of last Tuesday, payable to Gateway within six months of the deal's closing, with a final value based on factors such as the amount of inventory Gateway delivers when the deal is completed. The companies expect the transaction to close in the fourth quarter.
