The recent jump in Microsoft's stock price was on the minds of shareholders during the company's annual meeting in Seattle this morning, but not necessarily with a sense of satisfaction. During the question-and-answer period, a couple of shareholders asked and commented about recent stock sales by Bill Gates and some other executives following the share increase.

12.07.2008Intel Details New 45-nm Processor Fabrication Technique
Intel Corp. has disclosed more
details about its 45-nm
process, saying it is one of
the first chip makers to
implement high-k dielectrics
and metal gates into the
technology. Using an
undisclosed thick
hafnium-based material for its
high-k films in gate-stack
applications, Intel claims
that it is able to boost the
overall performance, while
also reducing transistor
leakage by more than 10 times
over current silicon dioxide
technology.
Intel's 45-nm process,
dubbed P1266, is said to
incorporate copper
interconnects, low-k
dielectrics, strained silicon
and other features. Intel said
it will use a new material
with a property called high-k,
for the transistor gate
dielectric, and a new
combination of metal materials
for the transistor gate
electrode. NEC Corp. and IBM
Corp. have both disclosed they
are moving high-k into
production.
''As more and more
transistors are packed onto a
single piece of silicon, the
industry continues to research
current leakage reduction
solutions. Our implementation
of novel high-k and metal gate
transistors for our 45-nm
process technology will help
Intel deliver even faster,
more energy efficient
multi-core products that build
upon our successful Intel Core
2 and Xeon family of
processors, and extend
Moore's Law well into the
next decade ,'' said Mark
Bohr, Intel Senior Fellow.

27.11.2006IBM and Partners Move Closer to 32-NM Chips
IBM says its next-generation 32-nanometer chips will cut down on power leakage and reduce the processor's size. IBM is moving a step closer
delivering the first of its first 32-nanometer microprocessors with an announcement that it has developed a high-k metal gate manufacturing
technology, which promises to reduce the power that leaks from a chip's transistors while reducing the overall size of its chips.
The
first of the 32-nanometer chips—a nanometer is one billionth of a meter—should be available in the second half of 2009, according to IBM.
The company, along with its five partners—Advanced Micro Devices, Chartered Semiconductor, Freescale, Infineon and Samsung—made the
announcement Dec. 10. IBM first announced that it was working on a high-k metal gate approach in January 2007. The announcements came about the same
time Intel began delving into details about its own Hafnium-based high-k metal gate chip development technology that first appeared with its
45-nanometer line of processors called Penryn.

30.10.2008Sympathizers Seek Answers from al-Qaida
Sympathizers submitted hundreds of questions to al-Qaida deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri's "on-line interview" before a recent deadline. Among
them: Why hasn't al-Qaida attacked the U.S. again, why isn't it attacking the Israelis and when will it be more active in Egypt, Saudi Arabia
and Syria? So far, there have been no answers. Al-Qaida's media arm, Al-Sahab, announced in December that al-Zawahri would take questions from the
public posted on Islamic militant Web sites and would respond "as soon as possible." More than 900 entries - many with multiple questions - were
posted on the main Islamist Web site until the cutoff date of Jan. 16. After the deadline, the questions disappeared from that site and no answers
have yet appeared. One thing is clear from the questions: Self-proclaimed al-Qaida supporters are as much in the dark about the terror network's
operations and intentions as Western analysts and intelligence agencies.
