Steam vs. Microsoft Live... Fight!

If anyone stands a chance against Microsoft's pay-to-play Games For Windows Live service, it's Valve's Steam. Turns out the gloves come off in just a few weeks.

Starting in July, Valve plans to offer a free update that adds social networking services like personal pages and gamer profiles, groups, game scheduling, the option to see who's played what games (or with whom), and both voice and text-based chat. The services work across all existing titles, old or new. And for all that, you'll only have to pay? Absolutely nothing.

Microsoft Live currently has Halo 2 and Shadowrun, the former an oldie (if goodie), the latter a middling multiplayer-only shooter. Steam has Half-Life, Half-Life 2 (plus all the upcoming episodes), Medieval 2: Total War, Trackmania, Civilization 4, Hitman: Blood Money, Sid Meier's Pirates, Counter-Strike, Geometry Wars, Sam & Max, The Movies, DEFCON, and several dozen more critically well-received games...

Windows 7 will give your laptop longer battery life

It's no surprise that Windows 7 is getting good reviews and praise as the operating system is proving itself to be a rock solid platform. It seems as the news is only getting better as Microsoft and Intel showed off how Windows 7 when paired up with Intel's new processor line will increase battery life for laptops, according to PCMag.com. The two companies worked together to help develop technologies that will allow for sustained performance while improving battery life in the next generation of Intel processors. "The dramatic leap in battery life appears tied to a technology known as Windows 7 timer coalescing, a technical term for minimizing the time in which the processor enters a high-performance, full-power state.

Xbox 360 sells most games per console

Microsoft sells more games per Xbox 360 sold than its rival console makers. That's according to some interesting stats from the US about console sales compared to game sales.

Nearly seven games are sold per Xbox 360 compared to nearly four for a PlayStation 3. The Wii weighs in at slightly less. It sells 3.44 games according to the research from NPD and reported by Joystiq. These figures aren't entirely surprising - the PS3 is still in early life and the ecosystem in development, while the Xbox 360 is now a mature console. The cheaper 40GB version of the PlayStation 3 goes on sale in the US tomorrow.

QuickTime hack allows Second Life currency theft

Security researchers Dino Dai Zovi and Charlie Miller have found a way to exploit an unpatched QuickTime vulnerability to steal Linden Dollars from users in the Second Life virtual world.

Dai Zovi (the hacker behind the CanSecWest MacBook Pro hijack) and Miller (creator of the first iPhone code execution exploit) cooked up the QuickTime/Second Life attack during an investigation of the security of online games.

It works against QuickTime 7.3 (the latest) and Second Life 1.18.4(3).”All the victim has to do is have video enabled and enter a piece of land owned by the attacker,” Miller said, nothing that any Second Life player wandering near the attacker will have their pockets picked and then yell “I got hacked!”

Microsoft Unveils New Titles and Powerful Momentum for Games for Windows

Following one of the hottest years in video game history, Microsoft Corp. today announced at the 2008 International CES the addition of new titles to the Games for Windows portfolio and strong first-year results for the Games for Windows initiative. Games for Windows drove the PC gaming category in 2007 with some of the most popular Windows-based games available, and will continue the momentum for Windows-based gaming in 2008.

Games for Windows truly thrived in 2007. We went from two titles in 2006 to a continually growing portfolio of over 60 titles here at CES 2008, said Kevin Unangst, senior global director of Games for Windows in the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. We delivered on our promise one year ago to reinvigorate the PC gaming space and bring the best portfolio of games to Windows. And this is just the beginning. With our partners, we will continue to drive the resurgence of Windows-based gaming.

CES attendees will get to experience some of the great games of 2008, with six upcoming Games for Windows titles on the show floor: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures (Funcom, Eidos Interactive), Conflict: Denied Ops (Eidos Interactive), Frontlines: Fuel of War (THQ), Space Siege (SEGA), Turning Point: Fall of Liberty (Codemasters) and Jigsaw Too Photo Edition (Carbonated Games), a game for Windows Live Messenger.
