Microsoft release Windows 7 application compatibility update

Following on from the Internet Explorer 8 update that Microsoft released for Windows 7 Beta a day ago, another update has been released targeting application compatibility. Judging by these two updates released, Microsoft is progressing nicely, and the most recent update targets mainly games that did not run before hand, or had to be opened via compatibility-mode. Interestingly, Microsoft didn't state which applications were targeted in this update, but it is of no doubt that users will find out soon enough. If you're currently having problems with gaming, or have had problems with it, in the Windows 7 Beta, install these updates and post in the comments to show which games now work, or still don't.

Vista, wireless kept off core Olympic IT roster

Microsoft's newest OS, Vista, has been relegated to waterboy status at the 2008 Olympic Games, while wireless networking won't even play a supporting role in Beijing.

Windows XP was chosen to run on all PCs handling chores vital to the Olympic Games, and has been installed on most of the PCs delivered by Lenovo Group. Vista will only be used on PCs in Internet lounges set up for athletes to use during the games.

The Olympic Games require mature, stable technologies, said Yang Yuanqing, chairman of Lenovo, during a briefing in Beijing. The Olympic Games aren't a place to try new technologies due to the size and importance of the event, he said. Everything must work smoothly...

One in four gamers play at work

Colleagues tapping away busily on their BlackBerry, phone or laptop at the office might not be as productive as they seem -- with one in four video gamers admitting playing at work, even in meetings, according to an online survey.

A survey of 2,842 office workers conducted on a video game Web site found one in four people, or 24 percent, said they played video games during their working day.

Game play increased up the corporate ladder with more than one third, or 35 percent, of chief executives and other senior executives who took part in the survey admitting to playing games at work. They made up 8 percent of the survey.

But while 61 percent of those who play games at work said they did so during lunch or other official breaks, the survey by market researcher Information Solutions Group found one in seven, or 14 percent, admitted playing during business meetings or conference calls...

Do Video Games Have a Role in School?

Research comissioned by games giant EA has suggested that both students and teachers believe that games can have a positive role in the classroom.

Out of a total 1000 teachers and 2000 primary and secondary students, 59% of teachers admitted they would consider using a popular video game in their classes, whilst 62% of students admitted they wanted to use video games in school. This does of course mean that a significant 41% of teachers and 38% of students did not agree.

EA's international marketing director, Jules Clarkson said: "EA has recognised for a long time the potential for computer games to stimulate teachers and students."

What he hadn't recognised were that 70% of those teachers interviewed believe that games lead to antisocial behaviour and even 30% of targetted students believed games could increase violence and agression.

The report, released on the first day of the London Games Festival, doesn't answer the question of which games it is that could benefit the learning environment. Even EA has said it will not change the way it makes games off the back of the reasearch.

Jules Clarkson added: "I do not imagine we are suddenly going to get into educational software markets but it does give us ideas about how to work with educational establishments."
