Microsoft Romania Launches Gadget Competition for Windows Vista
Microsoft Romania has just launched a gadget competition for Windows Vista and Windows Live. Essentially, the contest is nothing more than a repeat of the Windows Vista Gadgets Competition on Code Project, with the sole exception that entries can now be submitted for both the client and the cloud Microsoft operating systems.

29.01.2008Tivo Gadget for Windows Vista
Mike Swanson recently blogged about a cool new gadget he wrote for the Windows Vista Sidebar, the
TiVo Gadget for Windows Vista. The gadget,
available for download
here, is the
perfect addition to TiVo users' desktops. Even if you have multiple TiVos in your house, you can utilize this gadget to see the "Now Playing" lists
from your DVR. You can configure the gadget to group shows from the same series together and when the gadget notices a new recording, it will ding.
For homes with multiple TiVos, you can give the units friendly names, like "Downstairs" or "Den" to help identify them...

Pirated Microsoft Corp
software helped Romania to
build a vibrant technology
industry, Romanian President
Traian Basescu told the
company's co-founder Bill
Gates on Thursday.
"Piracy helped the
young generation discover
computers. It set off the
development of the IT industry
in Romania," Basescu said
during a joint news conference
with Gates.
Foreign
investors say Romania's IT
sector is one of most

high level of technical

wages and the country's
thriving underworld of
computers hackers.

OK, it's formally called the Live Search Maps gadget, but that's a mouthful so most people simply call it the "traffic gadget". The
traffic gadget was taken off the market for a few months for "security reasons" (not unlike like the Tylenol scare back in the 80's). In
any case, it's back!

17.05.2008iGoogles New Gadget-to-Gadget Communication
You can now allow iGoogle gadgets (formerly called Google personalized homepage modules) to talk with each other... if the gadgets are included on the
same page, that is. Google calls this their
PubSub (publish-subscribe)
framework for developers, as
Google
Operating System reports.
For instance, you can create two gadgets, A and B, which you will bind to each other using the
same name test001. Then, in the user preferences portion of the XML-based gadget, A contains the parameter publish="true, making it a publisher
gadget. And B will contain the parameter listen="true and the event on_change="updateMessage, making it a subscriber gadget.

31.08.2007WebSlices Hit the Desktop
Sarah Perez: I just saw
a post this morning about
Sean Lyndersay's new Sidebar gadget called the "
WebSlice Viewer Gadget." This brilliant little
creation brings IE8's WebSlices (bits of web content that you can access from the new IE8 Favorites Bar) right to your desktop via a simple Vista
Sidebar gadget.
The gadget, currently
in alpha (you've been warned!), requires Vista (unknown if x64 supported,
but let us know), IE8, and a web page that has
some WebSlices. Each
instance of the WebSlice Viewer shows only one WebSlice, so you will need to open multiple gadgets to show multiple views.>

01.04.2008Google Opens Pocket to Gadget Developers
Google has created a site
called
Google Gadget
Ventures. It's a pilot
program, with the aim of
"bootstrapping an economic
ecosystem around gadgets" -
according to a press email we
received.
The
program has two separate
monetary offers. The first is
an opportunity for already
successful Google Gadget
developers to get a grant of
$5000, to develop their
gadgets further. Developers
are eligible to apply for this
grant if theyve developed a
gadget thats in the Google
gadgets directory "and gets
at least 250,000 weekly page
views." Applicants must
submit a one-page proposal
detailing how they will use
the grant to improve their
gadget.
The second
Google offering is a seed
investment of $100,000 "to
developers whod like to build
a business around the Google
gadgets platform." You need
to have been a recipient of
the $5000 grant to apply. This
suggests that the initial
$5000 grant is kind of a test,
to see what developers can do
with a little amount of money
- if they impress Google, then
they'll possibly get $100k.
To apply for the seed funding,
applicants must submit a
business plan "detailing how
you plan to build a viable
business around the gadgets
platform"...

10.04.2008New Google gadget makes you the 'media server'
Google recently launched
what it's calling a media server
gadget, a new Windows-only application designed to send videos and images from a user's computer to any universal plug and play (uPnP) device.
Typical uPnP devices include the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, and the number of uPnPs available to consumers is
growing dramatically. Google Media Server should auto detect all uPnP devices connected to the computer, so users should only have to install and
briefly configure the gadget before it works on its own.

27.06.2008Turn any web widget into a Vista Gadget
The Amnesty Generator for
Windows is designed to easily
convert any embeddable web
site widget (including Google
Gadgets) into a Vista Sidebar
Gadget. Compared to Vista's
Gadget library's relatively
meager 275 gadgets, Google
Gadgets for your web page, for
example, currently sports over
3000 widgets. So basically,
Vista's gadget library just
grew from 275 to 275 plus 3000
plus whatever other web
widgets you can find on the
Internet. If this sounds
familiar to OS X users, it is
because Amnesty Generator is
also available for Dashboard.
The generator currently has a
few bugs (particularly in the
visual interface department),
but overall it works fairly
well.
