Hewlett-Packard said it will likely offer at least 3 different editions of Windows 7 - The Starter, Professional and the Home Premium editions on
future models of its Mini netbooks. Kyle Thornton, category manager for Business Notebook PCs at HP, said in an interview that Windows 7 Beta
testing is going on in the Mini netbook line and it runs very well on the Minis, even with Aero turned on. Besides the three editions of Windows 7
that HP plans to support, Thornton also hopes to continue to pre-install both Windows XP Professional and Vista Business on its business-oriented
netbooks.

of Windows 7 loaded on a netbook helped him to run Microsoft Outlook 2007, a number of internal applications, and IE 8 without any issues. Though
Craig hasn't mentioned which version he installed, since it is a pre-beta build of Windows 7, I think we can assume it to be Windows 7 Ultimate.

SanDisk have announced that they are launching a new range of Solid State Drives (SSDs) designed specifically for netbooks. The SanDisk pSSD-P2 and
SanDisk pSSD-S2 SSDs, expected in February this year, will be available in capacities of 8, 16, 32 and 64GB – which, with the latter two, would
allow for a full installation of Windows Vista (or any large operating system for that matter), something not possible on netbooks with smaller
capacity SSDs. The new range is said to have improved performance for netbooks, at a lower cost. Unlike the previous range of netbook SSDs, the new
range is to feature a SATA interface, following a change in design requirements.

Netbooks have accounted for nearly a fifth of all laptops shipped for two consecutive quarters now.
So says
DisplaySearch, whose preliminary numbers show netbooks represented 19.9% of shipments in the fourth quarter of last year and 19.5% last quarter.

Were they just a fad? That may very well be the case according to Intel.
Stu Pann, vice president in the sales and marketing group at
Intel had this to say.
"We originally thought Netbooks would be for emerging markets and younger kids, and there is some of that. It
turns out the bulk of the Netbooks sold today are Western Europe, North America, and for people who just want to grab and go with a notebook.
We view the Netbook as mostly incremental to our total available market. If you've ever used a Netbook and used a 10-inch screen size--it's
fine for an hour. It's not something you're going to use day in and day out."
So it seems that the original dream of having Netbooks
to take with you on-the-go is a bust. Any heavy computer user will know that to get anything done over a long period of time, you certainly can't be
using a 10" screen. So even if they increase the performance to unbelievable levels, they still won't exceed regular laptop sales, simply because of
the way-too-small form factor.
AMD believes that Netbooks will be in and out just as fast as UMPCs were before them.
Great
concepts aren't always s successful as they were planned to be. This seems to be the case with netbooks.

In a vote of confidence for Windows 7's suitability for use on netbook PCs, Hewlett-Packard Co. said it will likely offer at least three different
editions of the upcoming operating system on future models of its Mini netbooks.
That includes the Professional and Home Premium
editions, which Microsoft Corp. last week said will be the two primary versions of Windows 7, and the low-end Starter edition, which will limit users
to running three applications at a time.

Although Intel is optimistic about the sales performance of Atom-based nettops, some PC vendors doubt nettops will be as successful as netbooks.
According to Intel forecasts, between 2008-2011 netbook and nettop shipments will together see annual double digital growth. Netbooks are expected to
see shipments of 47 million units over the three years, while nettops are expected to ship 60 million units.
