June 11, Intel Corp. is

its research into the future
of multi-core processors.
Highlights include work on
a new ultra low power
chip-to-chip interconnect that
hits data rates up to 15
Gbits/second as well as
techniques to spread jobs more
effectively across multiple
cores and their memories.
Intel would not say when any
of the advances might appear
in its commercial products.
"Eventually we will
need to get to deliver
terabits/s of data to a
multi-core die," said Randy
Mooney, an Intel Fellow and
director of I/O research. But
using today's techniques that

Mike Glass: I attended Embedded World in Nurnberg last week. The number one application I saw over and over again was embedded devices based on
multi-core processors. If you think of Microsofts entire range of embedded operating systems “ Micro-framework at the low end, Windows CE (the only
real-time OS (RTOS)), and Windows XP; I expect multi-core processors to target systems built for Windows XP Embedded (XPe) first. This is because the
cost of a multi-core processor is higher than a single-core and at least for now more likely in systems that can absorb the roughly $55 cost of an XPe
client. But the interesting twist is that the value of multiple cores is that you can run an RTOS in one or more cores and run XPe in other cores. XPe
would be used to run Windows applications “ say some kind of Human Machine interface (HMI), where the RTOS would run a factory control application
that requires a guarantee of a processors time slice at some frequency that only Windows CE could deliver (or RTOS competitors like WindRivers VxWorks
or a custom Linux solution).

Ultra-portable computers seem to be all the rage these days, and as Unwired View is reporting, Finland-based cellphone manufacturer Nokia is expanding
their share in the market. The device that Nokia is producing is based on ARM's multi-core Sparrow processor, and will be running Linux to
support its unique widget-based interface. It's unclear on what exactly this looks like, but apparently each running application gets its own
semi-transparent widget to put its content in, and also multiple running applications can be stored, "for months." As for the hardware itself, the
prototype features diamond shaped keys, elevated slightly, and its display can tilt in several different ways for different functions.

The Register is reporting that Imagination Technologies has recently announced two multi-core graphics processing units, for use in mobile devices.
The chips are being called the POWERVR™ SGX543MP, with the last two letters on the end of SGX543MP being replaced with 2 or 16, to represent the
variance in the amount of cores. This news is rather interesting as MacRumors says Apple is an investor and licensee of Imagination Technologies, and
they are the company who currently makes the graphics chips for the iPhone and iPhone 3G. This could lead one to believe that these new chips will be
included in a new revision of Apple's iPhone, expected to be announced/released around June or July this year.

close attention to the development of multi-touch technologies.
Touch panel tablet PCs are mostly niche market products currently and

multi-core microprocessors,
from large corporations to
individuals, have gained a
boost from Advanced Micro
Devices Incorporated at a
Sunnyvale, California
developer center. The
continuous upgrades to the AMD
Developer Center, which offers
hundreds of computers with
multi-core AMD
microprocessors, are aimed at
helping software developers
improve the speed and
capabilities of software
running on multi-core-powered
servers, laptops and desktops.
AMD announced that later in
the second quarter, the center
will add computers with AMD's
latest multi-core
microprocessor, the Quad-Core
AMD Opteron processor
code-named "Barcelona".
AMD is also working
with software tool makers and
the open source community to
further build tools aimed at
AMD Opteron multi-core
processors. PGI compilers, for
example, can be used to
generate a single PGI Unified
Binary that is fully optimized
for both AMD and Intel
Corporation microprocessors,
AMD said, giving developers
the benefit of a single x64
platform to work from.
Microsoft Corporation and Sun
Microsystems Incorporated are
also working with AMD to make
sure Microsoft's Visual
Studio and Sun's Studio
development software are
tweaked for top performance on
AMD quad-core microprocessors,
AMD said. The chip maker is

The competition between AMD and Intel may appear to have calmed down a bit over recent months, but the retail market shows every sign that a new
battle has begun: Following the dual-core fight, it now appears that triple-cores in fact are increasing the pressure on dual-core PCs and quad-core
PCs have officially arrived in the mainstream.
For about half a year it seemed like entry-level quad-core PCs were stuck in the
$800 to $1000 range, with Intels Core 2 Quad Q6600 controlling supply and demand. But suddenly we are seeing a whole new dynamic in this market. Large
retail chains are selling what we would consider cheap multi-core processor systems that are competing with some aging dual-core systems still in
inventory and are pushing more up-to-date dual-core PCs below $500 and even into the sub-$300 segment.
