Full Review: Windows Vista December CTP

Love-him-hate-him Paul Thurrot has released a four part in-depth review of Vista's December CTP. "I think people are going to be surprised by how good the Windows Vista December 2005 Community Technical Preview (CTP, or build 5270) really is.

After years of painful delays and an uncertain couple of months since the last CTP, Microsoft shipped a near-feature-complete Vista build to testers this week, and the prognosis is extremely positive. From what I can see, Vista has turned the corner. The December CTP is an exciting release, stable and full of new features. In this review, I'll examine those new features, and the features that have changed since the previous CTP, build 5231"

UK O2 users now able to unlock iPhones

O2 confirmed today that from November 10 all O2 customers in the UK will be able to unlock their iPhone devices for use on other networks. The unlock will be free for pay monthly customers at any time during their contracts but O2 will charge a one-off £15 fee for Pay & Go unlocking at the end of 12 months after purchase. O2 customers can complete an unlocking form and O2 will unlock the device within 14 days. O2 were quick to stress that existing pay monthly customers will need to honour the remainder of their contracts despite the ability to unlock. Unlocking is a process that allows users to place a non-O2 sim card into the iPhone device.

No breakthrough in efforts to unlock the iPhone

Hackers are working to unlock Apple's iPhone, but the job appears to be more difficult than initially expected.

Hackers had hoped that modifying the iPhone's bootloader -- the program that runs before the operating system is loaded -- would unlock the handset. But that turned out to be a dead end, as the bootloader code must be signed using a 1,024-bit RSA private key employed by Apple, according to an update released last week by hackers working together on the #iphone IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel.

Now the hackers on #iphone are working to create an assembler utility for the iPhone's processor. "This is our last major hurdle to overcome in order to write programs for the phone," they said last week.

iPhone 3G unlock shown live to the web

As previously reported on Neowin last week, the iPhone dev-team has announced they've figured out how to unlock the iPhone 3G for use on any GSM network you have in your country. The patch will be released on New Years Eve and will require an iPhone that is running 2.11.07 baseband or lower and will have to be jailbroken. For those of you who were wondering how this is done, there was a demonstration of "yellowsn0w" (the codename for the unlock) shown live to the Internet by a member of the Dev-Team Blog named MuscleNerd. He used Qik on an iPhone 2G which allowed everyone watching to communicate with him and ask questions along the way.

The Key Snapper

The latest criminal on the streets in the Key Snapper, and what does he do? He takes pictures of your keys! And why does he do this? Because San Diego computer scientists at a lab in the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering have made a way to copy your keys with just a picture. Scary huh?

Now just a little background information. Your keys contain a numeric code that shows exactly to unlock your desired lock. If it doesn’t have that code, the lock won’t unlock.

So how does it work? Ok, so typically keys have about 5 or 6 cuts and are evenly spaced out. The people over at the UCSD lab made a piece of software that can determine the depth of each cut, the numeric code and info on the brand of key the picture is taken of. Use that little piece of software and you can successfully be “Sneakey.”

Did I forget to mention, they’re calling it Sneakey? Pretty creative huh? And watch out for the Key Snapper! He might just get your keys!

UltraSn0w unlocks any 3G iPhone

The iPhone Dev Team has released a video demonstrating a new unlocking method for all iPhone 3G's. The new unlock will be able to unlock the 3G iPhone running 3.0 firmware regardless of baseband or bootloader, where in the past has prevented future unlocking of the iPhone. The new tool, replacing the previous YellowSn0w, will be called UltraSn0w on Friday, after Apple has released the 3.0 firmware and can make last minute adjustments. UltraSn0w will both unlock and jailbreak the iPhone. Jailbreaking is what allows the device to run unsigned applications that are not distributed by Apple. This new method will work on the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G running 3.0.

Jobs says Apple will fight iPhone unlock hacking

Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs said today that it's his company's job to stymie hackers who try to unlock the iPhone -- the first time the company has officially said it would fight attempts to use the popular device on unauthorized networks.

At a London Apple retail store where he announced the iPhone's Nov. 9 U.K. debut, Jobs responded to a question about whether Apple would put a stop to the unlock hacks that have mushroomed recently. "It's a cat-and-mouse game," said Jobs. "We try to stay ahead. People will try to break in, and it's our job to stop them breaking in."

Several unlock hacks have been unveiled in the last few weeks that let users swap the iPhone's included SIM card with one from another cellular service provider so the phone can make calls on that carrier's network. With the iPhone limited to domestic sales until November, unlocking is the only way consumers living outside the U.S. have been able to use their phones.

On New Years Eve, iPhone 3G Unlock to go public

Yellowsn0w is the codename to the iPhone 3G unlock. Yesterday, the Dev-Team announced that they have officially unlocked the 2.11.07 baseband on the iPhone 3G. Users of the 2.2 firmware update do not have the 2.11.07, and will not be able to unlock their devices (the Dev-Team has previously told users not to upgrade if you wanted to get your phone unlocked).

Yellowsn0w (the codename to the unlock software) will be available for all users in Cydia, so no restore will be necessary. Since it will be installed via Cydia, it does not matter if you have a PC or Mac.

So, from now until the estimated launch date of New Year's Eve, the Dev-Team will put this software under extensive testing and QA. They have said before that until it is one-hundred percent stable, they will not release it to the general public, because they do not want to harm the device.

Complete instructions for unlocking will be given upon launch of the software. Just do not update past version 2.11.07 of the baseband.

Free iPhone SIM Unlocking Software Available (iUnlock)

The folks over at iPhone Dev Wiki posted a free SIM unlock tool for the iPhone. Similar to the other solutions, this software-only solution should allow you to SIM unlock your iPhone, allowing to use any GSM cell phone carrier. In the U.S. this limits your alternative choice to T-Mobile (over AT&T), but in other countries, GSM carriers are far more common.

The software is being mirrored (Gizmodo mirror) by a number of locations along with downloadable source code. Tutorials are still being developed but some early instructions have become available.

More download links and information has been compiled in this forum thread by ascham87.

Sprint Nextel to Unlock Phone Software

In an age of frivolous lawsuits, wireless subscribers of Sprint Nextel may actually be happy to hear that, as part of a proposed class-action settlement, the cellular provider has agreed to provide departing Sprint PCS customers with the code necessary to unlock their phones software. The move would allow the phones to operate on any network using code division multiple access technology, or CDMA; competitors using that technology include Verizon Wireless and Alltel, although the Sprint handset would still have to meet those networks technical standards to work. Additionally, the codes wont work for Sprints Nextel-branded phones, which use iDEN technology, and dont allow switching to AT&T or T-Mobile, which use global system for mobile communication, or GSM, technology.

Several Vista Editions, One Box

That's right, Microsoft plans to market several versions of Vista but will distribute all of the OS bits with every product shipped so users can easily unlock and step up to more full-featured versions using electronic keys.

Having a master Windows Vista operating system means customers that buy PCs preloaded with one Vista SKU, Home Basic, for example, will be able to punch their credit card into a Microsoft Web site to unlock Vista Home Premium and more speedily deploy media center features without an on-site visit or requiring a wipe and reload of the system.

"No matter which edition you buy you get all the bits and a key to unlock it. Everyone will have all the bits," said one source familiar with Microsoft's plans. "Right now we maintain master images for each version of Windows XP and it's a lot of work. Now there's just one master image."

Sources familiar with the packaging plan said it will drive more incremental revenue for the software giant and better enable the software giant to target Windows Live services and content to users globally.

UK company says it's close to unlocking iPhones

A company that unlocks cell phones in Europe said it is close to having an application that will allow customers to unlock their Apple iPhones so they can use SIM cards from carriers other than AT&T.

In an interview this week in New York, John McLaughlin, founder of Belfast, U.K.-based Uniquephones, said he has engineers working around the clock in several countries who are close to cracking the complex security system Apple Inc. has set up to ensure customers can only use iPhones with AT&T Wireless service.

The race by hackers to unlock iPhones has been on since the phone was released last Friday. Currently AT&T Wireless has an exclusive deal with Apple to provide service for iPhones, and customers must agree to a two-year service plan with the company. However, customers have complained that the carrier's wireless service is slow, and according to McLaughlin, there has been tremendous interest in the ability to unlock the phone.

Verizon announces LTE plans for hi-speed data

At the Mobile World Conference this week it was expected that Verizon would announce its LTE (Long Term Evolution) agenda. What was not expected was how specific Verizon would be with its plans. Verizon is usually low key on putting out deadlines but in the case of LTE, it is quite clear what Verizon has in mind. Two cities in the United States will become testing locations in late 2009 for the LTE technology with a nation-wide rollout to follow in 2010; consisting of 25-30 top markets.

Unlock a Windows PC via Firewire

A security consultant based in New Zealand has released a tool that can unlock Windows computers in seconds without the need for a password.

Adam Boileau first demonstrated the hack, which affects Windows XP computers but has not yet been tested with Windows Vista, at a security conference in Sydney in 2006, but Microsoft has yet to develop a fix.

Interviewed in ITRadio's Risky Business podcast, Boileau said the tool, released to the public today, could "unlock locked Windows machines or login without a password ... merely by plugging in your Firewire cable and running a command".

London to have satellites that monitor your speed

In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the vehicles speed (advisory mode).

iPhone dev team confirm 3G iPhone unlocked for all networks

The unofficial iPhone dev team have confirmed moments ago that they have completed an iPhone 3G unlock and are currently packaging a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in other applications from the team like QuickPwn. The update will be released on New Years Eve and will require a jailbroken iPhone and 2.11.07 baseband or earlier. Jailbreaking is a method of unofficially hacking the device and allowing it to run 3rd party applications not available on Apple's official AppStore. The latest iPhone 2.2 software updates the baseband beyond 2.11.07 and it is recommended that if you want a 3G unlock that you do not update to 2.2 using iTunes alone.
