19.02.2009Two Years After Patch, Another IE FTP Flaw
A flaw in the way Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser processes FTP commands could let attackers steal or erase data from a victim's FTP site.
The bug, which affects users of IE 6 and the unsupported IE 5 browser, gives an attacker a way of hijacking the victim's FTP
sessions. But a successful attack would be very hard to pull off and would only work in very precise, targeted attacks, security experts said.
The attacker would need to know the victim's username on the FTP server and the victim would have to already be logged into the
server, using IE. Under those conditions, the victim could be sent a malicious FTP link that would then execute commands on the victim's FTP
server.

Two years after patch, a new IE5/6 FTP flaw
A flaw in the way Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) browser processes FTP commands could let attackers steal or erase data from a victim's
FTP site.
The bug, which affects users of IE6 and the unsupported IE5 browser, gives an attacker a way of hijacking the victim's FTP
sessions. But a successful attack would be very hard to pull off and would only work in very precise and targeted attacks, security experts said.
The attacker would need to know the victim's user name on the FTP server and the victim would have to already be logged into the server,
using IE. Under those conditions, the victim could be sent a malicious FTP link that would then execute commands on the victim's FTP server.
This link could be sent to the browser via an invisible iFrame component, hidden on a malicious website, so the victim might not even know the
attack was taking place. "It's something that people could use to steal data, but you'd have to know your target," said Derek Abdine, the
principal software engineer with security vendor Rapid7, who unveiled the issue in a security advisory.

Internet Explorer is now an optional feature in Windows 7
Along with various other changes that are to be reflected in Windows 7 RC, here is a big change that is not in the list. From Windows 7 build 7048,
Internet Explorer(IE) is an optional Windows feature and can be installed/uninstalled from Windows 7. This will be a welcoming (and surprising) news,
especially to European Union and Opera who have accused Microsoft for not giving consumers a genuine choice of Web browsers. If IE is upgraded to
version 8 in Vista (from version 7), users do get an option to uninstall IE 8, but not IE 7. IE 7 remains as integral component of Windows Vista which
cannot be removed.

Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Beta 1
As reported last week,
Mozilla announced its beta
schedule for the upcoming
release of Firefox 1.5. Beta 1
will be released on September
8, followed by a second beta
on October
5.
Further
more, the first release
candidate of the browser is
expected on October 28, which
indicates the final version of
Firefox 1.5 would likely come
sometime during the month of
November.
Developer
s warned, however, that the
dates could shift depending on
bugs and user feedback during
the beta
phase.
Alpha builds
of the browser, code-named
"Deer Park," have shown some
of the features that may make
it into the final version.
Although, Mozilla has made no
official announcement of the
new features that are expected
to be included in Firefox
1.5.
Some of the
current enhancements include a
better software update system
to serve browser upgrades, the
ability to reorder tabs
through drag and drop

Firefox 2.0.0.3 updates security, stability
On March 20, Mozilla
Corporation released new
security and stability updates
for both
versions of its Firefox
browser and for its
Internet application suite,
SeaMonkey. The new updates
eliminate a situation where a
malicious web page hosted on a
specially-coded FTP server
could exploit a minor FTP PASV
port-scanning vulnerability to
perform a rudimentary
port-scan of machines inside
the victim's firewall. By
itself this causes no harm,
but information about an
internal network may be useful
to an attacker should there be
other vulnerabilities present
on the network, a spokesperson
said. The FTP protocol
includes the PASV (passive)
command, which is used by
Firefox to request an
alternate data port. The
specification of the FTP
protocol allows the server
response to include an
alternate server address as
well, although this is rarely
used in practice, but Mozilla
clients will now ignore the
alternate server address.
