Vista says NO to old DVD drives

Windows Vista will no longer support DVD-ROM drives that do not handle region coding in hardware (RPC1 drives) - thus preventing playback of DVDs that are region/CSS encoded with those drives.

Not a big problem, as RPC1 drives haven't been officially manufactured since 2000 (and Microsoft claims their drives are all broken), but for those with hacked drives (RPC2 with RPC1 firmware), or move the RPC1 drive to new computers, well, no more DVD movies for you!

Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator - Now Free

Amy Dullard: The Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator is now available as a free download on Xbox Live Marketplace when you request a token at http://www.thisishddvd.com/emulator/.

Why is it free now?

This decision was made in light of Toshiba's recent announcement that they are discontinuing their HD DVD business. The reasons for offering the emulator for free are two-fold.

Microsoft is committed to interactivity and giving content authors the ability to create more compelling entertainment experiences. The specification for HDi was developed with significant input from studios like Warner Bros. and Disney based on scenarios they desired in the next generation format. Offering the emulator for free allows a greater audience to experiment with interactivity with little to no cost.

Second, the emulator beta program had approximately 80 participants across the industry who relied on the emulator for testing HDi content. Continued access to the emulator will assist those post houses and developers in completing their outstanding HD DVD projects.

Windows 7 to have only one "compatible" logo

The Register is reporting on an interesting story from WinHEC about how Microsoft is planning to change how it will run the “compatible with Windows 7” logo program.

Microsoft seems to have learnt its lesson after the disaster that was the Vista compatible program which had 4 different logos and would eventually see Microsoft ending up in court facing a class action lawsuit.

Microsoft confirmed to partners on Wednesday that there would only be a single sticker that covers all PC’s peripherals and software that has been certified to work with Windows 7 when it’s released.

The changes are timed to coincide with Microsoft’s continued push towards Windows 7, helping partners to start developing products earlier than with Vista, which had only a relatively small number of compatible programs ready when it launched.

Microsoft Releases Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator

Microsoft Corporation, one of the many backers of the HD DVD format, has unveiled its Xbox 360 HD DVD Emulator. The tool enables film studios and disc authoring companies to model the behaviour of HD DVD disc content, including encoded video and HDi interactivity, in a virtual environment, before burning the HD DVD disc. The emulator uses a combination of available hardware (the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player) and specialized emulation software to ultimately enable playback of near-final assets from a network storage share, portable hard drive or optical disc. This eliminates the need for expensive hardware or time-consuming and costly trial-and-error processes for testing HD DVD titles, helping to ensure that titles ship error-free.

Amazon Pushes Blu-ray Disc, HD DVD With Promotions

Both the Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD camps have launched their own campaigns to help entice consumers to join their respective sides of the high-definition format war. TThe Blu-ray side is currently offering five free movies with the purchase of any player. Toshiba and Microsoft are also offering a similar deal for the purchase of an HD DVD player, including the Xbox 360 add-on drive.

Amazon.com is going another step further by offering even more free movies with the purchase of a high-definition player. Customers buying a standalone Toshiba HD DVD player or a PlayStation 3 may choose an additional three movies, which stacks on top of the five-free-movies offers for a total of eight free movies with the purchase of a new player.

Xbox 360 owners wishing to jump in to high-definition with the purchase of the HD DVD drive will receive two free movies from Amazon.com, which when accounting for the free King Kong movie included by Microsoft and the current five-free-movies promotion, also equals a total of eight movies.

Existing owners of high-definition players need not feel left out, however, as Amazon.com is also running a buy three movies for the price of two promotion without any requirement of a hardware purchase. See Amazon.coms promotional splash page for the full details.
