Offline Files in Vista
One of the key things that we focused on for Windows Vista was improving the experience for mobile (laptop) users. If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time running around with a laptop. However, when I am in my office, I tend to use my desktop. The primary way that I share files between my desktop and my laptop is by storing them on a Windows Server (it's also the primary way that I make sure that my files get backed up).

7.5.2007Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download
If you're like most PC users, you got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you're like 99% of the population, you get your new machine
from one of the major manufacturers. Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, all have one thing in common: they don't give you a real Windows Vista
installation disc with your purchase. Instead, they bundle what they call a "recovery disc" (that's if you're lucky - otherwise you'll have a
recovery partition instead).
It doesn't matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a
valid Windows Vista license - they just don't want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista
installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase.

17.03.2007Automated System Recovery (ASR) in Windows Server 2008 and Vista SP1
Automated System Recovery or ASR as it is more commonly known is the Windows API set to capture the configuration of disks and volumes on a system and
restore them in bare metal recovery scenarios. During such recoveries, backup applications (requesters) invoke ASR to restore the disks and volumes
prior to putting back the operating system, applications and data.
For the purpose of bare metal recovery scenarios, the disks
and volumes in a system can be divided into two broad categories “ critical and non-critical. Critical volumes are those containing system state or
operating system components and include the boot and system volumes. A volume containing the Active Directory database on a domain controller is also
an example of a critical volume. Critical disks as youve likely guessed are those that contain critical volumes.
Once the
operating system and data have been put back, requesters may perform more recovery operations after the system is booted into the restored operating
system.

19.09.2006Microsoft Inadvertently Ships Deleted Files
Microsofts use of virtual machines to distribute evaluation versions of software saves the end user much of the pain of having to configure test
systems. However, it also introduces a new quality control issue by exposing the full dimension of data that was on the system when the virtual
machines disk image was created, and last month, that issue caught Microsoft off guard.
The company began making disk images, or
Virtual Hard Drives (VHDs), with evaluation versions available on a limited basis in 2005 and more generally accessible through Microsoft TechNet in
November 2006, and had provided a way for partners to build their own prepackaged software stacks, using the Virtual PC technology it acquired from
the now-defunct Connectix in 2003.
SD Times in December learned that at least one of the machine images available for download at
TechNet did not have its free space wiped, and files thought deleted proved recoverable from an evaluation copy of the Internet Explorer Application
Compatibility VPC Image.

11.11.2008Microsoft Releases Backup Software To Testers
Microsoft is rolling out the first release candidate for System Center Data Protection Manager 2007, the vendor's flagship backup and recovery
offering. DPM 2007 melds traditional nightly tape backup with continuous data protection, which backs up data every 15 minutes to enable users to
recover deleted, corrupted or modified files.
In the continuous data protection market, there are vendors pushing solutions that can back
up data on the fly in real time, but these are too expensive for small and medium sized companies, said Jason Buffington, senior technical product
manager for Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager group.

04.10.2007Windows Vista Backup - questions answered
James Senior: There were a lot of comments in
my post about
Windows Vista backup I made in the summer and I wanted to follow up to some of the questions that I'd received having spoken to the guys who
developed the features over in Redmond.
Here are some of their responses:
- 0x8007001B: Please check the
firmware of the the DVD Drive is up-to-date
- 0x8007001B: The software knows how to swap DVDs
- My recovery drive: don't touch
it, it is perfect the way it is. Do NOT delete files - this thing is a life saver
- 0X8007045D: please get the etls files from under
c:WindowsLogsWindowsBackup and c:WindowsLogsCompletePC and we will take a look
- My recovery drive is almost full: exactly the
same thing: Do NOT delete files, do not put files, this thing is a life saver.
- 160GB: depends on the source drive. Backing up 500GB on
160GB usually doesn't work. I recommend 2.5 times the size of the source disk.
Hope this helps with some of your queries.

22.10.2007Windows recovery loophole lets hackers in
Windows Vista may be
Microsoft's most secure
operating system to date, but
researchers are still finding
some glaring loopholes for
hackers to exploit. Here is
the latest: all you need is a
Vista Install DVD to get admin
level access to a hard drive.
The loophole arises
because the Command Prompt
tool in Vista's System
Recovery Options fails to
request user name or passwords
before handing over access to
PCs running the operating
system.
The hack,
discovered by security
researcher Kimmo Rousku, only
works locally. Physical access
to a target PC is a must. Even
so, the potential for mischief
(such as deleting directories
or copying files on targeted
PCs) is enormous. Hackers
don't even necessarily need
to run a DVD. "Its easy to
create a bootable USB flash
memory that works in a similar
way," Rousku notes. ..

13.06.2007Vista SP1: Create a recovery disc
Long Zheng: One of the new administrative tools
Windows Vista
Service Pack 1 provides is the ability to create a recovery disc. At first, the name might fool you into thinking the
type of discs system manufacturers provide to you when you purchase a new
computer to restore your computer to a factory state, but this is not that. A more appropriate name would be śWindows repair discť.
To be blunt, this tool creates merely a slimmed-down Windows installation disc. It takes a normal Windows installation disc image and strips out
all the śinstallationť functionality leaving only the repair tools and common system files.
What a lot of people dont know (or
need to know) is that their Windows Vista DVDs are in fact running
Windows PE, an extremely lightweight version of Windows that can be booted from removable media for the purpose of system
maintenance. Up until now, creating a Windows PE image was not an easy task. This tool basically simplifies it down to just two clicks.

29.09.2007Apple hides account info in DRM-free music, too
With great power comes
great responsibility, and
apparently with DRM-free music

identifying information. Such
is the situation with Apple's
new DRM-free music: songs sold
without DRM still have a
user's full name and account

there's more to the story:
Apple embeds your account
information in all songs sold
on the store, not just
DRM-free songs. Previously it
wasn't much of a big deal,
since no one could imagine
users sharing encrypted, DRMed
content.
But now
that DRM-free music from Apple
is on the loose, the hidden
data is more significant since
it could theoretically be used
to trace shared tunes back to
the original owner. It must
also be kept in mind that this
kind of information could be
