08.08.2007Will update drive Vista use?
The first Vista service pack may serve dual purposes for Microsoft: fixing the operating system's rough edges while simultaneously indicating that
it's ready for mass adoption.
Microsoft initially downplayed the importance of service packs in an era where patches are easily
available online. Also, the company urged businesses not to wait for a service pack to start testing and rolling out Vista.
Nonetheless, in announcing its plans to release Service Pack 1 early next year, Microsoft is noting that the milestone remains an important signal
for some businesses that the operating system has reached a level of maturity.

Microsoft is working hard to nudge customers onto the Windows Vista bandwagon, offering free support to those migrating to Vista SP1. But IT

Microsoft released Windows Vista SP1 last week, complete with security fixes and other patches Microsoft produced between Vista's launch in early
2007 and the end of last year. Many Windows administrators delayed installing Vista until at least the first service pack. Administrators who
tested Vista SP1 in beta gave it poor reviews.
Attitudes haven't changed much since the service pack's release last week.

27.03.2008Patch Tuesday: Critical Windows and Office fixes coming
Microsoft is releasing two patches on Tuesday, November 11, to fix some critical security holes in both its operating system, and Microsoft Office.
One has been given a rating of Critical , where XML can be used for Remote Code Execution in both Windows and Microsoft Office, while
the other has been labeled as Important , only affecting the Windows operating system itself. Attacks seem to be located in the Windows
Extensible Markup Language (XML) Core versions 3.0, 4.0, and 6.0. XML programs are used for creating web languages, and encode data over the
internet.
Vulnerabilities have been identified in the following software:
- Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
- Windows XP
Service Pack 2 and 3
- Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and 2
- Windows Server 2008
- Windows Vista and Windows Vista Service Pack

- Microsoft Office 2003 with Service Pack 3
- Microsoft Office 2007
Both patches require a restart.

07.11.2008Performance Results Mixed with Vista Service Pack 1
Microsoft's newly released Service Pack 1 may solve some of the performance glitches that have annoyed Windows Vista users and discouraged others
from adopting the OS, but it doesn't appear from our initial tests to be a panacea.
In our first tests of the service pack, file
copying, one of the main performance-related complaints from Vista users, was significantly faster. But other tests showed little improvement and in
two tests, our experience was actually a little better without the service pack installed than with it.

07.02.2008Vista's First Service Pack Coming Soon
Windows Vista's first service
pack is arriving on August 14
through Windows Update,
roughly six months after
Microsoft released Vista. It
is not yet clear whether the
Windows Vista service pack
will include security fixes or
merely update certain Vista
components to improve Vista's
performance and compatibility.
News
outlets have been touting the
rumored release of two big
Windows Vista patches to beta
testers, but the releases have
been confirmed this week by a
leak of those patches to
various Web sites.
The Vista performance and
compatibility packs reportedly
address issues that some Vista
users have been complaining
about. Among other things, the
fixes are designed to improve
Vista's performance when
copying or moving large files
or large directories. Issues
with Vista's memory manager
-- which can cause the system
to lose its default gateway
address -- are also reportedly
addressed in the packs.
The
running theme of the fixes is
to improve the performance and
reliability of Vista, as well
as compatibility issues with
printers, digital cameras, and
other devices.

06.08.2007Microsoft: XP SP3 won't
arrive until '07
Aiming to keep its focus on
Windows Vista, Microsoft is
now targeting 2007 for its
next Windows XP service pack
update.
In a
posting to its life cycle Web
site, Microsoft set a
preliminary date of the second
half of next year for the
release of Windows XP Service
Pack 3 for both home and
professional editions. That
puts its debut well past the
arrival of Vista, which is
slated for the second half of
this year and later than both
outsiders and some insiders
had originally
predicted.
"We
will be releasing another
service pack for XP over the
course of the product life
cycle, and we are tentatively
targeting the second half of
2007 for release," a
Microsoft representative said
in an e-mail to CNET News.com.
"However, right now our
priority is Windows
Vista--we'll have more
information to share about the
next service pack for XP after
Windows Vista ships." ..

18.01.2006Vista SP1 benefit will be stability and reliability, not performance
The problem is one of the major issues with Vista is performance...
Adrian Kingsley-Hughes: Will Vista SP1 and how this
wont bring any relief to those who find Vista a bit slow or sluggish? Not really, but then again service packs arent about performance increases;
theyre about reliability and stability.
Ive seen a lot of service packs in my time. Windows 95 and ME both got one service pack,
NT 4.0 saw six, Windows 2000 had four and XP has so far seen two. But what I dont remember regarding any of these service packs is installing it onto
a system and then seeing any significant boost in performance. Service packs dont really work that way. Sure, youll feel specific improvements as a
result of some of the tweaks and fixes contained in the service pack, and you might feel the benefit of having your operating system refreshed by
loading the service pack onto it, but a service pack should not be looked upon as a performance upgrade. If your system cant run an OS, what it needs
is upgrading or replacing, not the application of a service pack.

If you're an IT professional and currently using Microsoft's Service Pack Blocker, the software giant recently announced that the current
blocks for Vista SP1 and XP SP3 are going to expire in a few months. The Service Pack Blocker Tool only temporarily prevents Windows from the

Windows Update. Effective April 28th, 2009, Windows Vista SP1 will no longer be blocked by the tool and will be delivered via Windows Update. The
same goes for Windows XP SP3, but the block will be lifted on May 19th, 2009.

04.03.2009Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta Whitepaper
When developing Windows Vista, Microsoft set out to provide higher levels of productivity, mobility, and security, with lower costs. After more than
six months of broad availability and usage, it's evident that these investments are improving the Windows computing experience. For example, in the
first six months of use, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than Windows XP (Windows Vista had only 12 issues, and Windows XP had 36). According
to the Windows Vista 6-Month Vulnerability Report by Jeffery R. Jones, Windows Vista had fewer security issues than all the popular operating systems
he studied.
Although most companies are cautious when deploying a new operating system, many have already started testing and
evaluating Windows Vista for deployment, and some have already deployed Windows Vista into their production environments and begun seeing the business
benefits Windows Vista can provide.
Microsoft's efforts to provide the best Windows experience ever in Windows Vista did not end
with its launch. This white paper describes the ways Microsoft strives to continuously improve Windows Vista. It then introduces Windows Vista Service
Pack 1 (SP1) and describes how the service pack will fit into the ongoing improvement process.
