Intel's BIOS tool spells death bell for third party utilities

ECS is showing Intel's backup utility called the System Recovery Tool.

This utility sits inside the BIOS of a motherboard that of course, sports Intel's latest chipsets. The application features partition and disk image backup and recovery, just like a lot of third-party applications. However, being built inside the BIOS, it has the advantage of not needing any sort of boot or recovery CDs, rather pressing a function key (F3 in the case of ECS's boards) on a keyboard.

The image creation process is very simple - press the F3 key, pick the option Create new image, choose what partition will be backed up and the destination (different partition, CD, DVD medium).

You can expect this feature to come on many motherboards in near future.

Bitlocker encrypts only OS partition

Bink.nu was just at a session on Integrity in Windows Vista from Steve Riley. "This security guy from Microsoft is always great to listen to. He talked about Bitlocker (hard drive encryption), Mandatory Integrity Checker and how IE7 behaves on Vista", mentions Bink.nu.

Also mentioned was that the goal of Bitlocker is to protect the OS, not the user's data, when your data is on the same partition as the OS your lucky. Through the bitlocker UI it is not possible to encrypt a separate data partition, with the commandline tool you can though.

TechSpot: Windows 7 Dual Boot Guide, Remove Partition How to

Windows 7 has proved to be quite the drastic improvement over Vista, enough that it even has XP stragglers crawling out of the woodwork to check it out. Your chance to test drive the release candidate is now running thin, in fact, if you haven't tried the new OS until now you are better off postponing your plans for a week and installing the real thing. The final version of Windows 7 has already been sent to partners and is scheduled to debut publicly later this week on October 22.

Simple guide to test Vista SP1 RC1 on a separate partition

Long Zheng: A couple of people, dozen at max, have expressed interest in testing out the soon-to-be-public Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate release. There are many ways of installing and testing operating systems and even more so service packs so it can be rather confusing and cumbersome experience for some people out there. Out of all the possibilities, I do myself and recommend everyone to always start fresh, but that doesnt always mean from the command prompt.

Whilst release candidate will be a very good representation of the final product early next year, it still means youll have to forfeit this release sooner or later so it is not recommended you replace your existing Windows installation with it. Especially with all the problems people have been running into uninstalling their service pack betas which itself sounds like a really bad idea anyway, its ideal to set up a fresh install. And the most convenient fresh install is on a separate partition on existing disks.

Formerly the process of splitting a partition involved third-party software which is time-consuming and sometimes unreliable, however a less-known disk management function in Windows Vista will simplify all that.

The Cost of 'Free' Wireless

AT&T is providing the city of Riverside, Calif., with free wireless access, supported by advertising. But there are still costs involved, said Michael Beck, assistant city manager.

"It doesn't come free, but it can be very cost-effective," Beck said. "That is where a community can get caught with a surprise. You have to make sure you know what the costs are on the city side, not just the wireless community."

Many cities, however, are getting caught up in the "free wireless" hype.

"In general, we've gone through a period of early hype and expectations," said Phil Belanger, managing director of San Francisco-based Novarum. "It's not peace, love and free Wi-Fi. It's a valuable service. There needs to be value for the city and things you can charge for." ..

Apple Updates Boot Camp Software

Apple has updated its beta Boot Camp software to version 1.1.2. The software lets owners of Intel Macs install Windows XP on their Mac in a separate partition, allowing users to choose which operating system to boot up to on startup. The new version offers support for all the latest Intel-based Macs, and also makes it easier to partition hard disks for the installation of Windows XP by offering partitioning presets.

Boot Camp 1.1.2 lets users install Windows XP on any internal disk; adds support for built-in iSight cameras and microphones; supports Apple's USB modem, trackpad scrolling and right-clicking on a notebook; and furnishes improved keyboard support.

Apple notes that installation is relatively painless: "If you previously installed Boot Camp beta, you can easily update to Boot Camp 1.1.2 beta. You don't need to partition your hard drive again (unless you want to change its size) or reinstall your Macintosh and Windows software or documents, but it's very important to update the Boot Camp Assistant software, create a new Macintosh Drivers for Windows CD and install the updated software it contains on Windows XP."

The Danger of Free

Everyone loves to get stuff for free. We line up to get a free drink, we sign up for free checking accounts, and we're happy to get a free gift with the purchase of our next car. We love free stuff, even though we all know and understand that free is an illusion. After that free drink, we pay for the next three. The bank is making money by investing what we put in that checking account. The car dealer can afford to give away a small gift because the profit on the car is large. But none of this seems to bother us - free things still have a certain allure. But is the concept of free taking us down a dangerous road?

Marketers long ago figured out the attractiveness of free. For decades companies have been playing tricks using free to lure naive customers. But recently, our obsession with free has given rise to a new phenomenon - where the customer is never asked to pay. How? Because the business makes their money on advertising. Marketers are happy to pay for access to customers, who in turn love not having to pay. So the web plays the glorious role of middle man. Are we heading into dangerous territory? The paths that we are taking lead to confused customers at best; and monopolistic practices at worst. A culture where consumers think that increasingly more and more services should be free is not healthy.

Linux Comparison: openSUSE

Previous to writing this comparison, I have only ever used Ubuntu and Fedora. Considering Ubuntu's popularity and reputation for being easy to use, I was expecting openSUSE to be nowhere near as good. From the moment I was greeted with "Welcome" as the LiveCD booted, I knew I was going to be proven wrong. View: Part 1 of "Linux Comparison" - Ubuntu An install for all. The installation was quick and painless. The installer correctly detected the existing Linux partitions, and also proposed that I did not format my home partition (for the uninitiated, this is more or less the "My Documents" of Linux).

Microsoft: Free tool for planning Office 2007 Conversions

On Friday, Brian Jones, an Office program manager at Microsoft, quietly announced the release of Office Migration Planning Manager, a free tool kit designed to help corporate users convert their existing Office files to Office 2007's new Open XML file format. The new technology reports how many and what kind of Office files exist on networked PCs. To use the 2.7MB tool, users will need either Access 2007 or a free, but as-yet-unreleased runtime version of the Access software.

Microsoft previously had released its Office Compatibility Pack, which can help IT administrators update files saved in Office XP or Office 2003 formats to Open XML. The compatibility pack includes a tool called the Office File Converter, which can be used to convert large numbers of files at the same time. Earlier versions of Office all save data in binary file formats but Open XML takes individual files, some of them in conventional binary formats, and repackages them in a compressed form.
