Wikiversity Gains Momentum

The online collaboration that has made Wikipedia one of the most used sources of information on the Internet is also being used to build a school and offer classes across the online world, and the project is taking off.

Coordinators of Wikiversity, one of the major projects of the Wikimedia Foundation Inc., said the project is picking up speed, and expect it to really get going within the next two or three years. Wikiversity is a free learning community, and aims to provide free educational materials and courses online. The most popular course currently on offer is on film making, said Cormac Lawler, a collaborative coordinator at Wikiversity.

Lawler and Teemu Leinonen hosted a session on progress at Wikiversity on Saturday during Wikimania, a yearly meeting to bring the international Wikimedia community together to discuss new issues and opportunities. This year, Taipei is hosting the event.

The Internet has long been associated with giving users opportunities to learn new skills for free. Type just about any subject into Google's search engine, including how to fix a car, play guitar, do needlework, or build a Web site, and then add the word 'tutorial' and up pop several Web sites offering guides on the subject...

Adobe makes Flex Builder free for students, faculty

In an effort to lure more developers to its tools for building RIAs, Adobe is making its Flex Builder 2 software available free to students and faculty at educational institutions.

Flex Builder is Adobe's development environment for building applications using Flash and AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime), two of the technologies integral to Adobe's strategy for making applications that use rich media available online and offline. Adobe hopes to woo some of the best of the crop of new developers at universities, which are just beginning to offer Flex courses as part of their curriculum.

Beginning next month, qualified education users can begin downloading Adobe Flex 2 at Adobe's Web site. The open-source SDK for Flex is already available free and can be downloaded online. The SDK includes the Flex code compiler and libraries for ActionScript 3.0, which provide the language and programming model for RIAs deployed on Flash.

Home Office buys iPods for staff

The UK Home Office is turning to iPods to teach some civil servants leadership skills.

A Times Online report explains that twenty leading civil servants have been given top-of-the range iPods for the purpose, as the Home Office searches for a way to train staff in a constant way.

The twenty civil servants are using their iPods to watch video-based training courses when they get the chance to brush up their skills. Courses are presented by mamagement experts.

A Home Office spokesperson explained that the iPods host fifty three to five minute leadership lessons, and added: "As with other modern learning aids, video iPods provide the opportunity for flexible learning and the cost is extremely competitive compared with the rates for classroom training for senior staff."

The Home Office pointed out that delivering lessons on an iPod gave learners easy access to a great deal of learning, all of which could be recycled. "An iPod is portable, convenient and just an extension of e-learning."

The twenty iPods and associated software and learning packages cost the Home Office £8,800.

Oosah offers 1TB of free online media storage

It's not hard to find an online service that lets you upload a few hundred megabytes of pictures, music, and movie clips. Some even give you 5 or 50GB. But Oosah is a service that's upping the game. By a lot. Oosah claims that users get 1TB of online storage for free.

There are some limitations. You can only upload videos that are 200MB or smaller, images that are 50MB or less, and MP3 files that are 9MB or less. And you can't upload executable files, office documents, or other files. Just movies, music, and pictures. But Oosah does accept most common media file types. There's also an option to upload media directly from your camera or capture device without copying it to your computer first.

Yahoo? MS? It's All Free, Just Try Them All

The impetus behind Microsofts and Yahoos fervent courting of the SMB market with freebies is simple: There is a huge, untapped number of small businesses, the majority of which arent online.

Between Microsofts new freebie, Office Live Small Business tools, and Yahoos recently announced all-you-can-eat free Web site hosting buffet, youre a fool if you reach for your wallet when it comes to getting online.

"It is unbelievable what is out there, free, on the Web," said Laurie McCabe, an analyst for AMI. "For project management, for CRM. Do a Google search for whatever you want, plus free, plus online service, and youll probably find a free online service."

The impetus behind Microsofts and Yahoos fervent courting of the SMB (small to medium-sized business) market with freebies is simple: There is a huge, untapped number of small businesses, the majority of which arent online. In the United States alone, analyst firms such as IDC and AMR peg the number of small businessesi.e., those with fewer than 10 employees--at between 15 million to 20 million. An estimated 50 percent of those small businesses dont even have a Web site.

Financial Times Will Allow Some Free Access to Web Site

The Financial Times, preparing for a fierce battle with The Wall Street Journal over business readers and online advertising revenue, will give casual readers free access to its Web site this month, according to executives at The Financial Times.

The Web site of the London-based business newspaper, which currently charges for much of its content online, as of mid-October will allow users to get up to 30 articles a month for free, said John Ridding, chief executive of the newspaper. Anyone who wants to view more online material will have to subscribe to the site.

The shift, part of what Mr. Ridding described as a broad overhaul of FT.com that will be phased in over several months, comes as other newspapers are rethinking their efforts to charge users for online content. A surge in online ad spending over the last three years has persuaded many publishers that it is better to increase their Internet audience, in an effort to appeal to advertisers, than to try to squeeze meager revenue from online subscriptions.
