Browse Your Digital Photos in 3D Stacks with PicMe

Freeware application PicMe scans your digital photo library and displays your pics in a flashy 3D-ish stacked interface. PicMe is primarily an image browser, and that's what it's best at, but you can also use it to share photos, either with photo sharing webapps like Flickr, Picasa Web Albums, or Facebook, or with PicMe contacts. The free version allows you to share 200 print-quality photos, so that's probably not your best choice for uploading your pics to the internet unless you really don't post that many photos. Either way, the interface itself brings a fresh way to browse your photos that may help liven up the way you interact with your photo library.

Phone cams forced to "audibly" click when taking pics soon?

According to the Library of Congress, eight-term US Republican Congressman Peter "Pete" King has introduced bill H.R.414 which would make it manditory that all camera phones make a "click" sound when they take a picture. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and at some point may become the law of the land. The reasoning behind the submission is to stop people taking "secret" shots (in public toilets and changing rooms, for instance). The so-called "Camera Phone Predator alert Act" would also make it illegal and "impossible" for any such phone to be hacked to avoid making this sound.

Microsoft hooks up Xbox Live subs with free Arcade title

Looks like Microsoft is going to do the right thing: as anticipated, Xbox Live General Manager Marc Whitten states in a letter to customers that, as recompense for nearly two weeks of outages, the group is offering up a full, free Xbox Live Arcade title free of charge. Sounds like it won't be until the next couple of weeks before the offer is active, but it will indeed apply to "all" Xbox Live members, and assuming it's for games worth more than 200 Microsoft points, it will be net positive for Gold users who lost about $1.64 worth of Live service over the last twelve days. Well done Microsoft, we think most will consider the stinging pain eased. Memo posted after the break.

Update: Confirmed, it's Gold AND Silver members. If you have an Xbox Live account, Microsoft just gave you a free game.

New web threat takes advantage of iFrame vulnerability, making its way to the U.S.

Security firm Trend Micro said that it has discovered a new threat that is currently making the rounds on the Internet. The threat is based on an iFrame vulnerability in webpage code to plant a keylogger to steal user passwords, or turn computers into proxy servers for various other attacks.

Trend Micro said that the threat could have originated from a computer Trojan-making kit and relies on a scenario in which website owners are unaware that they are compromised, and website users are unaware that surfing through seemingly legitimate pages can actually be part of an infection process. This process, according to the security firm, involves a malicious IP address that is inserted into the HTML code (HTML_IFRAME.CU), a download of malicious Trojans (TROJ_SMALL.HCK, TROJ_AGENT.UHL, TROJ_PAKES.NC, PAKES) from another URL via a JavaScript routine.

TrendMicro said that the threat was initially detected in Italy, but apparently is making its way to the U.S.

Microsoft hopes new photo tool will boost Windows

Geotagging is an onerous chore with today's technology, but camera makers are working to build it into cameras, and it can pay off down the road.

Online piracy "Legion," advocacy group says

The nearly $70 million Weinstein Co. actioner "The Last Legion" hits U.S. theaters in late August, but it was available for free Tuesday on Google Video.

Warner Bros. Pictures' "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," 20th Century Fox's "Live Free or Die Hard" and the previously leaked Weinstein Co./Lionsgate Films Michael Moore docu "Sicko" also were found on the site by the National Legal and Policy Center, a Washington-based advocacy group that recently set up a top 50 chart of pirated films and TV series.

"Phoenix" and "Die Hard" were spotted Monday by NLPC, which searches with title keywords on Google Video's search engine and via Google's blog search. The latter finds sites where bloggers post information about uploaded videos which, as was the case with "Legion," might not include its title...

China gets free music from Google

According to Reuters, Internet-users in China will be able to download for free approximately 350,000 licensed songs--soon to be more than a million--through Google. Not only will the Chinese be able to search for songs by artist and song title, but they will also be able to find tunes based on beats per minute and musical style. The music, by Chinese and foreign artists alike, comes from Sony, Warner, EMI, and Universal--all companies that have done deals with Google to open up portions of their catalogues for free distribution to anyone with an Internet connection in China. China contains the highest number of Internet-users, and a great many of them routinely download music, films, and software illegally.

Microsoft Adversary Rises Instinctively at Yahoo Bid

More than a decade ago, Andrew S. Grove, then the chief executive of Intel, aptly described the hypercompetitive mentality of Silicon Valley in his book title "Only the Paranoid Survive."

Now, the anxious efforts by Google, led by its chief executive, Eric E. Schmidt, to try to scuttle Microsoft’s $44.6 billion bid for Yahoo may well seem like a bout of Valley paranoia. After all, many industry analysts view the acquisition plan, announced Friday, as a desperation move by Microsoft to buy a bigger stake in the online advertising and Internet search markets, even as it and Yahoo fade further behind Google.

The fast, forceful response from Google is a product of Mr. Schmidt’s history and personality. Mr. Schmidt, 52, had spent much of his career battling Microsoft at Sun Microsystems and Novell, before joining Google in 2001.
