Windows 7 testers to get free copy from tomorrow

Last week Microsoft had a change of heart and decided to go back on what they had previously said by offering testers on the Windows 7 technical beta program a free copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, in reward for their efforts in testing the new operating system. Network Monitor 3 One Click Capture Tool - BETA Available

Wish you could get a network capture from a computer with no capture software installed? Wish you could have a network traffic "flight recorder" on a USB key? Here's your answer!"

The motivation behind creating this tool was to provide an extremely simple way to get a trace from an end user. And the name says it all, though maybe a small bit of false advertisement as it may take a bit more than just one click :). Once you have it downloaded to your machine, you can launch the executable and it will lead you through some simple dialogs that install the tool and start a trace. Once the trace is complete, which means it was manually stopped by the user or the default time of 2 hours have passed, a window will be opened to the location for the capture, called OneClick.cap.

<...>

Obtaining the Tool

At this point we are beta testing the tool. So the only means of getting it is on the Network Monitor project on http://connect.microsoft.com. When you join the project, you will see both the Auto-run and Extract Only packages in the download section. Once we release the tool, we will make it available on the Microsoft Download site as this is more convenient, which is our goal for this tool.

London to have satellites that monitor your speed

In a trial that can only be described as Big Brotherly, London is going is going to start trials of attempting to stop speeders from space. The basic idea works around that the vehicles are equipped with information about speed limits for public roads. A satellite will monitor the speed of the car vs. the pre-installed data to determine if the car is speeding. If the car is found to be speeding then one of two things can happen. The car can either be slowed down by the satellite (voluntary mode) or the car can alert you that you need to slow down but won't actually adjust the vehicles speed (advisory mode).

Need to eavesdrop a network? Try Microsoft's new free tool.

Need to sniff a network? Find out what's going on? Want to discover passwords your software is sending in clear-text... or see someone else's?

Microsoft's soon-to-be-released free Network Monitor 3.0 can do it. Worryingly, unlike utilities like Ethereal, it's also extremely easy-to-use.

Nobody's criticising Microsoft for making a cool, easy-to-use network tool, but the fact is any operator of a large LAN should be afraid ... unencrypted network traffic just got a whole lot easier to tap.

Microsoft will work with the Clinton Foundation to develop free Web-based software and services that cities around the world can use to monitor their carbon emissions and share ideas about environmental protection.

The announcement, made on Thursday, comes a day after former President Clinton said his foundation would finance the renovation of buildings in 16 cities in different parts of the world to make them more environmentally friendly.

Cities will be able to use the online software to better understand their environmental impact and to participate in an online community, sharing ideas and best practices and collaborating. The software will allow users to monitor their progress and track the effectiveness of emissions reduction programs. It will be compatible with some existing emissions reduction products, but Microsoft didn't list which ones. ..
