Cut to the Web Server Core: Windows Server 2008

Windows Server 2008, due for its official launch today, is a major upgrade for Microsoft's server platform, the first for around five years. Requiring a graphical user interface (GUI) on a server operating system always seemed odd, even back in 1993 when Microsoft released Windows NT 3.1.

It has taken Microsoft until now to begin fixing the problem. Server 2008 comes with an installation option called Server Core, and although it is not quite GUI-free (Notepad and Regedit still run), it is command-line driven and lacks most of the baggage that previously came as standard. The snag with Server Core is that it is incomplete.

Apple Recommends Antivirus Software

Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as well as other security issues.

Microsofts free enterprise search is a must try

George Ou: At the Heroes Happens {here} event in LA yesterday which saw the launch* of Windows Server 2008, one of the relatively hidden gems of the event in my opinion was Microsoft’s free** Search Server 2008 Express. It’s is a streamline install of Office SharePoint Server 2007 with almost all the enterprise search features that most users would want and is a must download for any Windows Server shop.

Even if you didn’t own Windows Server 2003, 2003 R2, or 2008, it would seem like a great way to build a very cheap enterprise search engine appliance with a minimal Windows Server 2003 or above license and a simple 1U server for less than $2000 which is a LOT less than a $30K starting price Google Search Engine appliance with a 500K document cap.

Symantec releases antivirus just for gamers, but why?

Symantec today released Norton AntiVirus 2009 Gaming Edition, an antivirus utility designed specifically not to bother gamers while they, err, game. The "Gamer Mode" suspends updates, alerts, and other background activities when you’re in the middle of a game. It is automatically enabled when the system is in full screen mode (and can also be manually enabled). Resource-intensive actions such as a system scan only occur when the computer is idle. Furthermore, Symantec claims that the software is a performance-driven release, but then again, the normal NAV2009 is as well (as we've seen in a recent performance test). Rowan Trollope, senior vice president of consumer products at Symantec gave the following explanation for the product release...

Sophos: 'Don't rely on antivirus software'

Security vendor Sophos has warned companies not to rely on antivirus software to protect their IT infrastructure and systems.

S peaking at the Information Systems Security Association conference in London on Thursday, Vanjer Svajcer, senior virus researcher for Sophos, said companies should also look to alternative technologies and procedures to ensure their IT assets are secure.

Svajcer said: "I always say, 'Do not rely on antivirus software'. In 99 per cent of cases you cannot. The problem is we have to see a virus before we can detect it. If antivirus is in place, it may not detect [a virus] because it may be very targeted for you."..

Windows Server 2008 is SP1. Adventures in doing things right

Ian McDonald: I had a bunch of people internally ask me why Windows Server shows it's version as Windows Server 2008 SP1 (for brevity - WS08). I will explain it, but I wanted to use the Writer feature that allows me to insert pictures. Who says anything beyond notepad is a waste of time. Actually, that's me usually...

The history here goes back to problems we had form the split we had when we broke Windows XP from Windows Server 2003 (WS03) way back in 2000.

At the time we had Windows 2000 (Win2k) out in the market & it was being very well received. Especially on the client side which was doing well with corporate desktops. At the same time in the consumer side, we had Windows ME. I never worked on WinME, I have never installed it, & I know nothing about it except what people have told me. I removed what i really think. If you meet me, feel free to ask.
