Microsoft Rechristens WinFX as .Net Framework 3

In the name of dispelling confusion, Microsoft has decided to rechristen WinFX as .Net Framework 3.0. We're still not 100% sure this rebranding will achieve Microsoft's goal, given that the branding (and rebranding) around .Net has been pretty darn confounding.

It's official: Windows Communications Framework (Indigo) + Windows Presentation Framework (Avalon) + Windows Workflow Foundation (WinOE) + InfoCard (now known as Windows Cardspace) = .Net Framework 3.0. If you want a shorthand way of describing .Net Framework 3.0, it's the new Windows programming model that commences with Windows Vista.

Windows 7 Sensors Framework interview from PDC

Bryant: During my time at PDC, I managed to speak with many people knowledgeable about various aspects of Windows 7. One of these people was Dan Polivy, a lead on the team behind the new Windows 7 sensors framework which was mentioned a number of times during the old days when Windows 7 speculation was rampant. Dan and I carried an informative interview regarding a number of functions of the Windows 7 sensors framework, including topics such as how easy it might be for a user to receive sensor data from sensors which are plugged into the framework as well as what one could do with various forms of sensor data, such as locational input from WiFi triangulation and GPS signals.

If youre a developer, watching this video would be a wise decision; were doing something special for those who watch, so stay tuned.

.NET Framework 3.0 SP1 & 2.0 SP1 on Vista RTM?

Aaron Ruckman: I've received the following type of question a few times and would like to give the answer with some background:

Q. Where is the .NET Framework 3.0 SP1 & 2.0 SP1 for Vista RTM?

A. .NET Framework 3.0 & 2.0 released with Vista as OS Windows Components, which means that they are serviced as any other windows Component.  Therefore, the .NET Framework 3.0 & 2.0 Service packages will be officially released as part of the Vista Service packages. When Vista SPX is shipped then .NET Framework 2.0 & 3.0 might also include updates in that service package.

In this case the .NET Framework 3.0 & 2.0 have a service package that will be shipped with Vista SP1.  Vista SP1 RC is available now (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/bb738089.aspx)

NOTE: The same logic stated for Vista and .NET Framework will also be true for Windows2008 & .NET Framework 2.0 & 3.0, only Windows Server2008 will release with .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 & 3.0 SP1 in the OS.

.NET Framework Source & Symbols available for Windows Server 2008 & Windows Vista SP1

Shawn Burke: The build of the .NET Framework that we recently released source for was 2.0.50727.1433, which was the VS2008/.NET 3.5 RTM build. A small change was made to the Framework after that, and this new version, 2.0.50727.1434, was then delivered to Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1.

Since the source and symbols have to exactly match what's running on a developer's machine, this meant that customers running these new OS releases lost the ability to access the Reference Source for the parts of the .NET Framework that we've released. The new symbols and source have now been deployed for the following...
