It seems the ad wars are starting to heat back up, folks. Moss states that $30,000 is what it takes to fill a iPod with 120GB of storage, whereas the Zune Pass costs you a mere $15 because it's a subscription based service.

Document Format Dispute Spills into the Open

The recent decision by the Open Document Foundation to substitute the World Wide Web Consortium's Compound Document Format in place of the format it was set up to promote, the Open Document Format, has sparked a contentious debate over what shape the format should take.

Open document advocates are debating fundamental questions about whether there should be a single document format or multiple formats that interoperate, and the relative importance of format and applications.

"At the core of our dissatisfaction with the ODF is its supporters' fundamental view that interoperability is an application thing and not a format thing. Our view is that if there is to be a Universal Document Format, the format must be the nexus of interoperability," said Sam Hiser, vice president of OpenDocument Foundation, explaining the move away from ODF.

If you're the music industry you create a new digital format that will hopefully encourage users to purchase entire albums instead of single tracks. Think of current music downloads to be similar to VHS and the CMX format will be more like DVDs in that they offer bonus content in addition to the music. CMX has a few large backers including Sony, Warner, Universal and EMI but notably it is not being supported by Apple.

Microsoft's Matusow and Mahugh on Office's move to open format support

"We feel we are achieving parity in how Office treats the format, by making them all part of just one simple list of formats supported by Office," said Microsoft Office Product Manager Doug Mahugh, in an interview with BetaNews.

For the history of applications up until now, the specification of the format used to encode documents was defined largely and almost inescapably by the functionality of the programs which utilize them. A format represented what an application was designed to do, and that format changed when the application changed.

Office 2007 won't support ISO's OOXML

For customers expecting an ISO-conformant Office Open XML (OOXML) in Microsoft Office, the wait will continue: Microsoft will not implement the standardized version of its own document format until Office 14 ships. Meanwhile, a service pack due in 2009 is expected to expand the formats supported by Office 2007.

Today, Microsoft announced that it was making new commitments to document interoperability within its Office product line for Windows. Office 2007 Service Pack 2 will add native support for OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.1, PDF 1.5, PDF/A and XML Paper Specification, an XML-based fixed-document format created by Microsoft.
