The Forbes 400

One billion dollars is no longer enough. The price of admission to this, the 25th anniversary edition of the Forbes 400, is $1.3 billion, up $300 million from last year. The collective net worth of the nation's mightiest plutocrats rose $290 billion to $1.54 trillion.

Wall Street led the charge, despite this summer's market jitters. Nearly half of the 45 new members made their fortunes in hedge funds and private equity. Money manager John Paulson joins the list after pocketing more than $1 billion short-selling subprime credit this summer.

Leveraged buyout titans David Bonderman and James Coulter of Texas Pacific Group make their first appearance on the list, along with William Conway, Daniel D'Aniello and David Rubenstein of the Carlyle Group. Blackstone billionaires Peter Peterson and Hamilton "Tony" James also join the Forbes 400 for the first time.

Seattle tops 'Forbes' most wired cities list

The list-happy business magazine Forbes Thursday released its annual survey of the nation's most wired cities. Topping the list is Seattle, the home of Amazon.com, Starbucks, and Microsoft (well, it's in a suburb).

Surprisingly, none of California's famed tech cities are in the top 10. San Francisco dropped to No. 11 from No. 4 last year, mainly because of its lack of high-speed access options. But take heart, San Franciscans: Forbes still says you're the most tech savvy city in the country, since you have the highest percentage of home broadband Internet users in the country. Following right behind the "city by the bay" are San Diego and Los Angeles.

Ellison tops tech exec salary list

Congratulations, Larry Ellison, you're No. 1!

Forbes , as it does every year, has released its list of top executive salaries. In the overall list as well as the technology category, Ellison, the Oracle chief exec and billionaire yachtsman, was tops with total 2007 compensation at $192.9 million.

It's another big win for Ellison, who recently won a $3 million tax break on his $200 million estate in swanky Woodside, Calif. Ellison's lawyers successfully argued that the house suffered from "significant functional obsolescence" because it turns out there's a limited market for 23-acre estates built to look like 16th century Japanese summer palaces.

Gates Slips From 'Richest Man' Status

Microsoft's Chairman Bill Gates has been supplanted as the world's richest man, according to a revised Forbes Magazine ranking, using October 1 data. Gates now takes second place to Berkshire Hathaway Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, whose wealth Forbes estimated at $58 billion.

Gates had held the top richest spot for 15 years, but his wealth slipped from $57 billion in August to $55.5 billion in October, the magazine reported. Taking third place, at $25.4 billion, was Gates' ostensible nemesis, Larry Ellison, cofounder and CEO of Oracle Corp.

Bill Gates Again Tops List of Richest Americans

According to Forbes magazine's 25th annual ranking of the 400 richest Americans, Microsoft founder Bill Gates ($59 billion) is the richest person in America for the 14th year in a row, followed by investor Warren Buffett ($52 billion) - the pair's fortunes each grew by $6 billion in the past year. Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson ($28 billion), head of Las Vegas Sands, and software tycoon Larry Ellison ($26 billion), chief executive of Oracle, remain at spots 3 and 4, respectively. " The collective net worth of those listed on the 400 this year rose $290 billion to $1.54 trillion ," Forbes said.

For the first time since 1989 there are no members of the Walton family, descendants of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, in the top 10. The Waltons were displaced by Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who came in at 5th place with fortunes of $18.5 billion, and brothers Charles and David Koch, who run Koch Industries and are each valued at $17 billion, earning them 9th place. Investor Kirk Kerkorian was the biggest gainer on the list, his fortune rising by more than $9 billion in the past year to $18 billion and moving from 26th to 7th place. Of the top 400 richest Americans, Forbes said 270 are entirely self-made, 74 inherited their wealth and 39 are women.

Warren Buffett Tops BusinessWeek's Annual Ranking of 'The 50 Most Generous Philanthropists'

For the second consecutive year, Warren Buffett tops BusinessWeek's annual ranking of "The 50 Most Generous Philanthropists." Bill and Melinda Gates, George Kaiser, George Soros, and Gordon and Betty Moore round out the top five.

Whittling down a lifetime of earnings -- a prospect most of us would like to avoid -- is the goal of many of the billionaires and multimillionaires in BusinessWeek's annual ranking of most generous givers. If their megagifts to causes ranging from cancer research to civil rights to the prevention of meth addiction are any indication, they're making good progress. Sixteen of the 50 U.S. philanthropists on the list gave north of $100 million this year, nine donated $200 million or more, and one towered above them all with $723 million in gifts.

Innovation is a key nowadays to making (and more importantly, selling) products, so making a top 50 list is certainly a grand achievement. Without further ado, here is the list. 1. Team Obama: Barack Obama made the top position because his team innovated in his quest to become the next President of the United States. He employed the power of technology, using Twitter and various other internet tools to connect with voters, doing what no other President has done fully before. 2. Google: Google continues to make it to innovation lists, and with little wonder.

Mac Attack For Apple

Apple's going back to the future this holiday season.

Forget new gadgets like iPhones and iPods. The company expects to get a year-end lift from the product that made it a sensation in the first place: the Macintosh computer, which seems to be winning converts from the Microsoft Windows world.

Shares of Apple rose 2.4%, or $4.46, to close at $189.96, after two analysts lifted their price targets the stock. Both said they expect strong holiday Mac sales.

RBC analyst Mike Abramsky upped his price target of Apple shares to $215.00 from $205.00 on Thursday. He maintained his "outperform" rating on the stock.
