Full Review: Windows Vista December CTP
Love-him-hate-him Paul Thurrot has released a four part in-depth review of Vista's December CTP. "I think people are going to be surprised by how good the Windows Vista December 2005 Community Technical Preview (CTP, or build 5270) really is.
After years of painful delays and an uncertain couple of months since the last CTP, Microsoft shipped a near-feature-complete Vista build to testers this week, and the prognosis is extremely positive. From what I can see, Vista has turned the corner. The December CTP is an exciting release, stable and full of new features. In this review, I'll examine those new features, and the features that have changed since the previous CTP, build 5231"

09.06.2008iPod FM Transmitters Legal in UK by Christmas
FM transmitters seem set to be
made legal in the UK just in
time for Christmas. After
years of campaigning, UK
regulator, Ofcom, has taken
its most significant step yet
to legalise the use and sale
of FM transmitters for iPods
in the UK.
The
regulator today published
draft regulations that will
make use of these devices -
which stream music from an
iPod at a very low range using
the FM frequency - legal in
the UK. Ofcom explains that
it proposes to permit the use
of these FM transmitters on a
"licence-exempt basis".
The publication of the
draft regulations is the
climax of ten weeks of public
consultation. Now the document
has been published, the
regulator will accept further
responses for another four
weeks.
Final
changes will come into effect
in December 2006.

09.07.2007Last.fm to start charging international users a fee
Last.fm is a very popular service amongst music listeners, providing social networking type functions to a website that tracks the songs you listen
to. You may also be aware that you can listen to any song you like using the service, an option that may be beginning to cost Last.fm a hefty amount
of money. Because of this, Last.fm will start charging international users a fee to use the Radio service. According to Mashable, the basic functions
of the website will remain free, like "scrobbling, recommendations, charts, biographies, events, videos etc." So, what do we mean by international
users? Well, if you live in the UK, US, or Germany, you can disregard this entire post.

01.11.2007Wireless Purchases and "Buy From FM" Coming to the Zune
Microsoft has announced that, beginning with a software update next week (beginning September 16th), all Microsoft Zune portable media players will be
given a software update that make it easier to discover and purchase music while on the go.
To make all purchases on the go possible,
Microsoft will be giving users access to the Zune Marketplace directly on their Zune devices using an available Wi-Fi connection. To help shoppers
find what they are looking for, they will be able to browse lists of top songs and new releases or use the on screen keyboard to find the music they
are looking for. Once a track is selected, it can be downloaded or streamed directly to the Zune device.
To further the ability of Zune
users to discover new music, the firmware update will also allow listeners to "Buy from FM". This feature utilizes the built in FM tuner and the
Radio Data Systems and RT+ feeds already available inside of FM signals to identify a song being played on the radio. Users can tag these songs and
then download or stream them directly to their Zune device. If no wireless signal is available, at the time, the tracks will be added to a queue and
will be downloaded once the device is connected to a computer or an available Wi-Fi hotspot.

09.09.2008Last.fm sends a memo to Techcrunch: You're full of s**t
A few days ago we reported that U2's latest album, dubbed No Line on the Horizon, had leaked to the Internet despite huge efforts put in place by
Paul McGuinness. After all was said and done, everyone's eyes turned to Last.fm, a web service that lists your recently played tracks. Techcrunch
ran a story stating that, "Last.ft, which is owned by CBS, actually handed the data over to the RIAA." The story then became a huge tabloid in the
blogosphere as fears of the RIAA possibly tracking down the leakers. The story has turned into a huge controversy over Last.fm user's privacy,
and co-founder Richard Jones isn't so pleased with the defamation of his service.

06.04.2009Surfers sing praises of Last.fm
Last.fm claims to have become the fastest growing online music network in the US, with a unique listener increase of 92 per cent since launching four
weeks ago. The social networking music site said that it has more than 21 million active users worldwide every month.
Martin Stiksel,
co-founder of the site, said: "We have created a new model that works for everyone - listeners, artists and copyright holders - and the user response
proves that it is working. "Free is the future, and this is signalled not only by the industry's growing acceptance of what we're doing, but
more importantly by the incredibly fast increase of users accessing music on Last.fm since we launched free-on-demand."

Last.FM Blowback: Day of Silence Turns Into Day Of Outrage
Following the public statement
from Last.fms Felix Miller
opting out of yesterdays Day
of Silence, Millers
blog was deluged with
angry music fans criticizing
the companys decision.
One devoted Last.fm fan
asked the question many have
wondered about in the wake of
the companys acquisition by
CBS: Is the reason you arent
joining in simply because you
have the resources to be able
to afford the new rates?
Taking the brave route and
moving into a debate that
could have spiraled wildly out
of control, Miller responded
to the critics by reiterating
the companys position. Miller
said, We arent joining
because we dont think this is
the right way to go about this
issue. We as a music playing
company need to work with the
industry and that means
talking to everyone. We dont
feel like all routes have been
exhausted yet, and as such see
no need for drastic action.
Interestingly, a large portion
of the critical comments were
peppered with praise for
Last.fm as a service, so
despite the user fallout, a
massive defection from the
service doesnt appear likely.

CBS buys music network Last.fm

CBS said in a

than 200 countries and would
fit well with its plans to
attract younger viewers and
transform it from a content
company to an audience
company.
The Last
team will continue to run the

of the deal and work with CBS
to apply its
community-building and
